Formula for damage taken?

Does anyone have the formula for damage taken? I'm trying to work out just how effective Defense is.

There is a % of damage reduction formula for Defense somewhere on these threads. I really don't remember it off the top of my head, but someone worked it out.
If I had to guess from what i remember is that 1 defense is somewhere in the ballpark of .1% damage reduction. Don't quote me on that.

Remember though, it gets a boost from "protect".

Percent Physical Damage Taken = 1 – (0.044 x PDEF)

Percent Magical Damage Taken = 1 – (0.044 x MDEF)

old site, mostly correct calculations, probably easier to just say its .05% for every point of defense. then take into account protect ect.

Thanks for the info :) it was more to do with foresight. With protect I have 917 defense, foresight boosts that to 1101, but that number didn't really mean anything to me since I wasn't sure how defense was calculated.

Yes, and remember the higher our defense goes with higher ilvl gear ie heavensward.
The more damage foresight will mitigate, since it scales with our defense. Will be interesting to see how high it gets.
I believe the last time someone calculated mitigation from foresight it was in the 7-9% ballpark, could have changed since then.

But all stats will be growing. Along with enemies getting stronger too, so in reality foresight is still only going to give you 20% defense, it won't become op because of us getting higher ilvl.

My current calculations is at 800 Defense/Mres you basically have about 34% damage reduction from those types of attacks, then the question is how other effects add to that and in what order, and how you can calculate your total damage mitigation.

Assuming that Shield Oath, Ramparts and Sentinel "stack" in the addative way that it makes a grand total of 80% reduction, but since we already have 34% mitigation from our armor we are still taking damage even though the total mitigation added should be at 114%, from that we can assume that the armor mitigation happens at another step of the damage cycle.

I guess it takes the "magical" reductions first such as Shield Oath, Ramparts and Sentinel first, and then apply the rest of the damage on the armor before the final damage taken is calculated.

They do not. Damage reduction cooldowns - or stances, in Shield Oath's case - are not additive. If you just use SO, you take 80% damage. If you add Rampart on top of it, you now take 80% * 80% = 64% of the damage as if you used neither.

You can test this by letting a monster hit you with neither on, recording the average damage taken, then putting up shield oath and rampart and seeing how much damage you take then.

It doesn't matter if other stats grow. It's based on our personal Defense rating, and if Defense grows higher then amount we get from protect will also grow. Which in turn adds to the amount of Foresight.
It can become more effective than it is currently.

The % might be the same, but that does not mean it will not mitigate more damage.
Since it is not 20% less damage taken, it is 20% more of a stat.

20% of 100 = 20 (~1% damage reduction)
20% of 1000 = 200 (~10% damage reduction)

*keep in mind the above is just an example and that Menae's explanation of damage reduction cooldowns being multiplicative still applies.

This is all assuming they change nothing to the def formula in 3.0.
But even if we double in Def and foresight might get a little edge over rampart for example, it wouldn't necessarily mean foresight is op.

foresight only applies to physical damage though, while rampart also mitigates magical hits

For sure, foresight kinda meh right now, potential to become a decent mitigation effect. Never will be OP.

And yeah the physical damage only, limits its effectiveness, but then again a lot of attacks that appear to be magic damage are indeed physical.
Still this is the major shortcoming of this ability.

I bet dark Knights will get one for magic defense.

That would be a pretty cool way to go with them. They could also make it reflect magic damage up to a certain % of health or, just a flat potency, like a magic vengence.

Too bad it won't be able to be cross classed. Only classes provide abilities right now for cross action compatibility.

I can see it too, cross job actions. I will be very limited though

I doubt there will be a change to the system. Plus it would rework the entire balance of all the existing jobs. Currently every job can only x-class with 2. This is most likely why SE made these classless based jobs. They will rely on the existing pool of abilities.

I doubt the system will not change, every class will need to be rebalanced anyways with new lvl 60 abilities and traits. On top of that the current class/job system is no longer relevant and they have clearly already started moving away from it. I would put my money on at least seeing them redo cross class actions.

You will be once you buy the expansion that is $$$ right there. But I seriously doubt it. There does not need to be a forklift upgrade to the current system.

LOL, we shall see !

They could just cheese the current class/job system a bit and have new jobs have "hidden" classes that let them give cross-class.

It seems unlikely that old jobs would get to cross anything from a new job. I'm more interested if there'll be anything cross-able from higher levels.

I am sure there will be. With the level cap being raised and x-class skills being granted every 10 levels for your job then at 60 you would have an extra skill to take. With the current pool even out of the existing classes/jobs it would be very disappointing. Take Paladin for example. I took raise because the pool of x-class skills is horrid. I guess I could cure myself but whatever I am stabbing would laugh at me.

Follow up question, curious about the block rate and strength numbers on the shield, what do they mean?

Block rate determines how often you block. Block strength determines the percent of damage mitigated.

Generally speaking, large shields block less often but for more while small shields block more often but for less.
