MT and OT gear sets?

Hey so I mostly play PLD but this goes for War too lately I've been running a lot of WOD and some ST and I've noticed the bosses, with a few exceptions, really only need one tank not 3

So that lead me to wonder should I have 2 gear sets? One with gear of fending and one with gear of striking (I think for strength) would the differences mean anything as it would just be jewelry?

For anything besides coil or a challenging Primal, you should be using full STR accessories on any tank in any situation, to be honest.

My WAR uses all pure STR accessories except one i110 penta-melded vit/str accessory for everything (including T13). You really don't need that much VIT in either of those. maybe 7.5k hp as a PLD and 10k as a WAR.

If your left-side gear is content current there's hardly ever any reason to wear fending accessories. Just Coil...maybe The Cloud if you don't trust your healers, maybe the current EX primal. Even in those cases I never have full fending accs.

So get some of that strength stuff. Swap your bonus points too!!!

So for example if my left sides all like 110+ (I have a mix of ironwork and noct atm) of fending I should be going strength on the right huh?

It really depends, I never liked going full str, always went full vit, because you never know what you're going to get in each instance. You just might end up being the only person who can tank, but you won't know that until after the pull. Full vit is unneeded in a lot of circumstances, but gives wiggle room when you don't know what you're going in with.

I now use only crafted and fully over melded 110 accessries, break the 9k suggested for fcob, and have plenty of str to go with it

also, it kills me inside to see WAR going full vit. They have a boost to hp and healing received for a reason, so they can wear str without getting dangerously low in most content.

Keep in mind a full strength build tank in sword oath will pull hate off a lesser geared tank with shield oath/defiance up. Especially if the MT ignored getting crit/det.

What I said holds true for OT or MT, you just don't need to wear fending gear except in the hardest content or if you have bad left-side stuff.

^ I completely forgot about this, remember this. with my penta melded accessories, I have people In similar, if not better il for wep, light farming for zetas, and more 13p than I have, but they have fending accessories. Each time, it was a back and forth with hate, I'm in sword oath ripping hate off a war in defiance. A pld with str is no joke, tank stance or not. If you go str as a paladin, watch your aggro, you just might find yourself as Mt when you don't have the health that your team will need you too.

I use 3 gear sets, full VIT, i110 Hybrid and full STR on PLD. In dungeons I'll swap between them depending on the rest of the group.

For 99% of the content some sort of Hybrid is best with a PUG or DF group. Gil route is i110 accessories, cheap route is mixing and matching i110+ accessories.

Not sure if you read the entire post or not, but I clearly states it's not the required/recommended health, but what a random healer can handle. Not every healer is good enough to make it through coil, and even being 110+ won't stop them from being too bad to keep you alive. I had full vit in ifrit hm, no noon bonus, and (this particular run) I survived only because of hallowed ground. Unless you have a pre-made, I would suggest avoiding full str during an encounter as pld

How current does my left side have to be? For instance my left side is almost entirely Demon gear save the iron works head and noct belt plus high allagan trousers and just now I hit 10k with all i110 VIT acessories with my new judgement ring of fending. Does it matter which plat we use in regards to fending and slaying? I was gonna mix and match depending on initial secondary it came with like DET or Crit.

Don't think of it as "how good are my left side pieces?" but rather "how much HP do I have if I use X?".

As examples:

You need 7.5k to tank T9. This includes Echo, so you can have less outside of SCoB and get boosted to the threshold.

You need 8k~ to OT T13. You need 9k~ to actually tank T13.

T6-8 require less than 7.5k; T10-12 require less than 9k.

So if you can afford to switch X VIT accessory for X STR accessory and not go below the HP threshold for the content you're doing, then you're golden. Platinum/Ruby/Topaz accessories are ideal as they give you a mix of both, but that greatly depends on how much gil you're willing to spend.

RE: Which Platinum accessories you should get, just try to maximize Crit/Det/Acc. SS doesn't do much for you, but in terms of DPS it's better than Parry, so keep that in mind.

As a side note, PLD is complete garbage at tanking Cloud. If there's a WAR in the party, try to get them to tank it, because (from experience) you run out of useful CDs fairly quickly and most healers in WoD will let you die without them. :<

In terms of accessories: figure out the stats you want, look at what each stats' materia costs are, and then buying the accessory with the most expensive stat pre-loaded so you can save on costs. Also to consider: VIT4s are usually about 2-3x more expensive than STR4s.

Hey Spooky are the HP numbers you said pld or war hp numbers? Or both as a guideline?

I have 3 sets for war
full vit (11.1k HP, only used for large pulls, garuda normal, tank swapping content when the other tank is full vit, and bad healers)
relic (just str set with bravura for fast switching to animus, also have an extra zenith in case I want to try for atmas for other classes without switching and eating the minute long penalty)
str (all str right side, over 7k hp without defiance, almost 9k with, default set)

I converted WAR numbers into PLD numbers, so I assume they're the same.

WAR (in Defiance) would be:

9.5k = T9
10k~ = T13 OT
11k~ = T13 MT

pld HP is nearly identical to war hp without defiance
as in, if they both have the same exact gear (and exactly equivalent weapons vit-wise, like zenith relic) the war will have just barely more hp. back when I hit i105 my war had like 26 more hp. the difference is really insignificant

9k before defiance will give you about 11.25 k in defiance, more than you will ever possibly need for any current content, especially non final coil

Well, it has already been said that the main thing is to find out how much HP you actually need, then start switching VIT to other stats. Can't emphasize that enough.

Second thing: Crafted i110 accessories are definitely better than a mixture of i130 fending/slaying. You only benefit from i130 if you are going to go full STR or full VIT.

Consider two slots, rings let's say:
i130 Fending/Slaying = 27 Vit, 23 Str
i110 HQ crafted pentameld x2 = 42 Vit, 36 Str

Secondary stats won't be as big of a difference, but the above should be all you need to make that decision. Only downside to crafted is gil.

Third thing: I recently downed t13 for first time. Did it with 11k HP (warrior OT). 5x crafted jewelry, 30 points in Str. That is a bit more than people here have said is necessary, and they're right. But I was sure happy to have that little extra breathing room when tanking Pain or the 3rd Akh Morn or even the P2 adds. I will probably be switching a small number of those crafted over to i130 Slaying, however, now that group is more accustomed to the fight.

I have two sets for my PLD, one for MT and one for OT.
My MT set main goal is to have enough HP and hit the front accuracy cap.
For my OT set, I stack as much STR as I can while hitting the flank accuracy cap. This generally allows me to focus more on Det and Crit since it can be difficult to keep those at the highest while keeping enough accuray for the front.

I put each set in a "corresponding" Oath macro to change quickly before engaging. In tricky fights, I match my oath and set manually.

If parry ever become relevent if the future, those two sets could eventualy share not a single piece of armor.

Definitely. I find myself preferring to off tank as a warrior simply because of this. Melee dps beside me have gotten killed by the boss suddenly turning and cleaving me because I wasn't paying close enough attention to my aggro as paladin. With war you can at least use your maim combo and not really have to worry about it. :s

I don't change whether I'm tanking or off tanking because I have a full set of pentamelded i110 accessories.

You don't have to 'worry' about to much str gear if you OT as war in non coil content. Ripping hate as an OT is a pld problem because they just spam halone no matter what. As war you can OT without enmity boosting skills so there is no real fear of taking it off the MT. If your not tanking in a 24 man raid you can balls to the wall str as war and use eye/path. Pld, if your taking hate off MT then you should be MT.

This is also why hybrid 110 accs are the best answer. Then you never have to guess what gear you need, or get stuck in low hp in say wod and suddenly need to take over cuz MT died and whatnot. Hp and str in 1 package. Keeps it simple when you are playing Russian roulette with DF healers.

Vit is like Acc. Nothing is more useless than too much of those stats. Get th acc and vit u need, then up your str as much as possible.

Weapon: Zeta
Head: IW
Body: Dread
Hands: Dread
Belt: IW
Pants: Dread
Boots: IW
Neck: Dread Slaying
Earrings: Dread Fending
Bracelet: IW Slaying
Ring: Dread Slaying
Ring2: Dread Fending

Something like that. Left side IW pieces you definitely don't want are the gloves and the body - the pants are fine if you have the demon body until you can get the Dread + Dread combo. Belt can be Dread or IW depending on how much acc you need. Accessories are mix and match, just depends on how much acc you need, how your Zeta is spec'd, etc. etc. The safest buys are Head/Belt/Boots.
