This is my first post on the forum so forgive me if this isn't quite the right place. That said...
Since I just recently got a PS4, I've now noticed that to upgrade my PS3 version of the game to a PS4 version I must give up my ability to play the PS3 version. My question is, why? :confused:
I see no benefit for the company. There is no money to be made. Unless my PS4 breaks for some reason and my PS3 remains intact I see no reason I'd ever need to play on my PS3 version again. On it's face, it seems like this would be a way to get people to pay for the PS3 version again, but honestly, who'd do that? If you have multiple service accounts, perhaps, but I still don't see how that matters since the other account would still have a PS3 copy unless it was upgraded.

In the end, it seems as though this is a pointless cost. My internet is far from high speed, I download updates at roughly 250 KB at best, often times slower. Just to download the game itself on my PS4 via the trial version I spent a total of 4 whole days. I can only imagine the time it'll take to update since my PS3 version took longer to update than to download the game itself back in December. The main reason I even care about this restriction is because it not only seems nonsensical, but it means I'll be unable to play the game for quite a few days for what amounts to no good reason in my mind.
If someone could explain why this makes sense, by all means, I'm all ears. Right now however I see no benefit for Square in this choice, instead I find it detrimental. A customer whom of which has played Final Fantasy XI for 5 years and now has started to play this, as well as having been a fan of the company for quite some time, is now disgruntled and annoyed. Who does that benefit? -

I ask this policy be changed, and that I be allowed to keep my PS3 version active whilst also being able to play on my PS4. I think this fair to ask, but if anyone has good reason as to why my request may be misguided please share, as I'm genuinely curious as to why this restriction is in place. :(
I really hate this 1000 character limit... I wrote out the entire thing before knowing that which is why I'm multi-posting. That said, I'm used to the FFXI forums, so please forgive that. -

You could just edit your first post to bypass the posting limit.
Now on topic: The reason they don't allow this is because you'd essentially be getting two copies of the game for two different consoles for the price of one and that's a no go for SE's marketing division. It's the same reason they don't automatically allow PC users access to the PS3 version even if they didn't purchase the PS3 version. -

It a free upgrade not a free license. Just like you need a license (reg code) for both PC and Playstation if you wish to play on both platforms same for the console. You simply trading your PS3 license for the PS4 one instead of having to buy it.

The question is, what do they gain by taking the PS3 copy? Who'd buy a PS3 copy when they have it on PS4?
I mean, the only reason I even care is because I want to update the game's files before doing the transfer since it's going to stop me from playing for up to a week. -

People purchased the PS3 version to hold them over until they could play it on PS4 and the upgrade as a thank you of sort for those who had to wait for the PS4 version. The download on PS4 alone took me 4 days, and I'm assuming it's the full game even though I told it to download the trial. The update on my PS3 took me around twice as long for the update alone than the game itself, so assuming more data is involved for the PS4 updates than the PS3 updates... I can't see it being any faster than probably... 3 days really.
