Suggestion for changes to LB system.

So with the expansion coming up and the changes to the LB system incoming I had a thought about how I'd change the system.

Now from what I understand, the LB animations are changing but the LB itself is going to remain the same. E.G. SMN and BLM are still both going to use "meteor" but the SMN version will probably be changed to look like a primal or something.

But I was thinking what if they did a complete overhaul of the system instead? My idea is based on the Quickening system from FFXII and skill chains from FFXI.

Instead of a party wide shared LB gauge, give us individual LB's with animations based on our class/job. But these LB's won't be like the current ones, they'll all be attacks, strong ones, 500 potency or so. When used in succession by 3 people the last person to use their LB will have a chance to activate a concurrence effect by pressing the limit break button again. These concurrence effects would be the current LBs.

When solo-3 man, we would get the level 1 gauge, in a light party we would get the level 2 gauge and in a full party we would get the level 3 gauge. All levels would be the same potency but with different animations and would activate the stronger concurrence effects based on the level of the gauge of the last person to activate their LB. Once a Concurrence is used the party will get a debuff similar to that of virus and apocatastasis that prevents another concurrence from being used for 5 minutes. The individual LBs can still be used for damage though.

Some examples:
3 man party- level 1 gauges- PLD opens with seraph blade(level 1), WHM follows up with retribution(level 1), DRG closes with dragon fang(level 1). Concurrence effect- DRG can use braver.

4 man party- level 2 gauges- SCH opens with omniscience(level 1), BLM follows up with arcane bolt(level 1), PLD closes with shining wave(level 2). Concurrence effect- PLD can use mighty guard.

8 man party- level 3 gauges- BLM opens with scourge(level 2), WAR follows up with fell cleave(level 1), WHM closes with wrath of the elementals(level 3). Concurrence effect- WHM can use pulse of life.

I actually like your idea op I do, I had a lot of fun in the good old days of ffxi skillchaining/magicbursting for some awesome damage BUT that takes cooperation, too much for the majority of mmos nowadays.

As it stands we can barely get ppl that pay attention as is, tanks that never pick up adds, healers that are too busy casting lolholy while ppl die, and dps that purposely take aggro or afk at the barrier....

they need to keep a much simpler format even if it is not as engaging. (but again I do hear you and think the idea is cool :)

I would love to see very potent abilities added instead..like the 2 hr in ffxi (but maybe down to 30 min or so averaging the runtime of a dungeon or raid.), something one can control on their own.

People have been asking for this since ffxiv v1.0's beta.

It's an awesome idea and the engagement might actually help with the social/community problem in this game. But it would appear SE isn't hearing any of it.

I actually kept the lack of communication in mind with this idea, with the pace of combat, systems like battle regimen and skill chains just couldn't work in this game because the fights are so fast people can't get organised in time, but with the limit break its a one off attack that is much more like weapon skills from FFXI in the sense you have a lot of time to prepare and strategise with it.

On the flip side as you say, people aren't interested in working as a group, but I would like to put a some in there. Some people are not interested in working as a group. And i think this system fits better for both kinds of player than the current system.

For those who don't, the LB can be used as just a powerful one off attack they can use whenever they feel like, this is better than the current system because when you get people like that they waste the gauge for the whole group and its an annoyance for those who do want to work together. I kept the idea of making the concurrence purely based on the last person to activate their LB to keep the need to organise very basic, unlike FFXI where it took specific skills in a specific order this just requires you use them one after another and the last person gets an effect so the rest of the group can even organise around these unco-operative individuals to try and get a concurrence.

Then for those who are organised and want to work as a team this opens up much greater possibilities and actually allows jobs with less useful LB's to actually make use of that dusty LB button that they never get to touch in the current system, even if it's not for the concurrence effect.

I also kept the system for getting greater concurrences limited to the last person to activate their LB so that there'd be less or no need to be constantly checking what everyone's gauge is at as you'd only need to know the level of the person who's concurrence you want to activate allowing others to use their LB's for higher damage at will, without messing up the tactics of the rest of the team.

The reason people do that stuff is because the content is frustratingly easy. People will start paying attention when the content demands it. The problem is the only tier of content that brings that demand is at the end of the game after people have gotten used to face rolling everything.

Hmm I dunno about helping with social/community, I just think it would be nice if since the limit break is a group thing that it should benefit from some group interactivity, I mean beyond being in a party together there's really no real team mechanics in this game. Nothing like skill chains from XI or battle regimen from 1.0, I mean FFXII is a solo game (one that XIV draws heavily from in style) with a more interdependent LB system than an MMO.

My hopes are when they add personal LBs (if its going to be like the new PvP everyone has one thing) you will be able to skillchain off of them for extra damage, like FFXI did. I think this would be the best way to add a feature like this into the game with how fast pace the combat is already. Example: Mnk uses their LB > Drg follows up his/hers this > skillchain (or whatever they will call it) takes affect for added damage > Caster uses their LB and gets added damage added to it for a burst.

Idk just a though, my favorite thing about FFXI was skillchains and magic bursting, added a lot of skill to the game imo would be cool to see them added into this game. Note: Not taking the place of the party LB, I personally believe their should be PT LB uber strong like Final heaven, and personal LBs that are real strong but on par with the party LB if used correctly with other jobs, this would also promote not stacking jobs for whatever content you are doing. Idk just fun to think about.

Would love a Chrono Trigger type of LB system. It's kinda like XI's system, but would be more fun if it was more in line with CT. It would allow for a lot of different and fun combinations. But you'd have to have a hell of a lot of prompting the player going on, or it would be impossible to teach people, just like it was with battle regimen in 1.0. Like one player uses/queues a certain action, and a special glow appears on other players action bar. Although while they are queuing a action you'd have to allow them to continue their normal combos, or you run into same issues as 1.0 battle regimen. Although I'm sure server lag might make this difficult, idk. A much more complex, yet hand holding type of LB/Tech(CT term) system would be really fun. Would be less boring if we could chain with people, and it wasn't just a mindless 1,2,3 button mashing contest. PLD queues Spirits within, blm responds and presses Fire I, and you get Fire Sword. Or PLD uses Rage of Halone, and blm uses Fire III, and get Fire Sword II. Healer can add in holy, and get some kind of Delta Force, triple tech. It obviously would need a lot of new code, and lots of work, but would be awesome in a mmo I think, so long as it hand holds players a bit. Otherwise people would just ignore it, if it was too hard.

* Please consider Individual Limit Breaks with the ability to Skillchain / Link / Combo them for Additional Effects / Damage (a true Party Combo system).


We started a huge thread about this during 2.0's Beta phase, and had threads about Skillchaining in 1.0. I really hope they consider it. To answer the Dev Team's reply (from Beta):

* Yoshi P, your worry that the Battle System is "too fast" to consider Skillchaining (Renkei) would be alleviated if it was limited to something like Individual Limit Breaks: Because Limit Breaks happen less often than Normal Attacks, Players only have to focus on coordinating Combo'ing them every once in a while.

It adds Player Coordination and huge *interest* and engagement outside of "just yourself" for every major battle in the game. There's a meta aspect to it, and it makes the player feel more interested in fights, even if they've done them 50 times before (because you can pull off different Party Combos with different combinations of your Limit Breaks (which order to use them, what effects happen after).

Players loved CHRONO TRIGGER's Triple Tech System, and in the early years, Final Fantasy XI's Skillchain / Renkei system was a lot of fun.

Please consider it for 3.0.

That really the only way I could see the Skillchain system from XI working it this game. add personal LB and chain them together. perhaps even use the Skillchains to fill the party LB and make that more powerful because it would be more team play intentisive to fill.

I'm not so sure requiring others to be alive in order to use Pulse of Life is the best idea.
