Crafting... for what purpose?

So crafting looked like it would be fun to mess around with. And I do have to say the way they handle the process is interesting. Your gear matters quite a bit and the different abilities are pretty cool.

But I got to say... what seems to be the point of it all? Granted you could make the same argument for what is the point of killing the big bad monster but that still seems the be the purpose behind the game. You know fight evil and kill bad guys.

But when I look at the loot progression is appears to be:

Top Tier Content --> Tome Content (Myth, Sold, Poetic, whatever else is next) --> Dungeons --> Crafting?

I'm aware there are some specific stats on accessories you can gain only via crafting but man it seems like the payoff is kind of crap.

Am I missing something here?

Varying opinions here, but...

- craft items - (low level) for people to buy to use
- craft items - some people buy to turn in for various rewards... (i.e. too lazy to craft themselves, so they buy off the market board)
- craft items - well, obviously to level up to where you can make the higher tier items.
- Ability to repair gear yourself; relative to the craft and the gear type.

Personally, I went with fishing first and use that to make some money since I'm currently in the stage of acquiring materia for Animus to Novus gear. For the crafting I've done so far outside of a gathering job, I've been able to sell most of what I've made.

Other veteran crafters can chime in with their opinions, but you certainly don't have to level a crafting job. ;)

For me, because Crafting is just AWESOMLY interesting.

I'm an old WoW player and I always tought "wtf... I do click a button and I have ma craft done?". This part of FFXIV is so cool I hardly have time for other things (well, except Fishing... I LOOOVE fishing).

But that is personal taste and I can understand other players do not like it.

However, there is some objective arguments for crafting :

- make ton of gils
- make more ton of gils
- make even more ton of gils

If you want a big house, it's pretty difficult to reach it without crafting. You can either trade on MB (I've won tens of millions playing on the materias prices), or you can craft (I've also sold for tens of millions on MB with crafting).

If you dont want a big house and dont feel crafting is fun, then you should concentrate on what you like. Maybe it's pvp, maybe it's dungeons. Dont push you too hard. Crafting is not mandatory at all :cool:

Also what Kaitlen listed out are true too, especially the repair part. Even if you don't want to craft for gil or simply having the advantage from crafted gears compare to dungeon/raid loot, having all crafting classes up to level 40 at least (if not maxed) is good thing so you can repair your gear anywhere including inside dungeon (so you won't have to leave the fight out of reason you need to repair), provided that you carry Grade 5 Dark Matters with you.

Crafting does have quite a bit of use in the game:
-cosmetic stuff, from glamours to furniture, some of the housing items are very useful (mailbox, company chest, summoning bell, etc)
-sub-50 gear
-top tier raid content. When they raise the top ilvl, they add crafted gear for the previous top ilvl. Crafted gear with materia is much better than the old gear, and in many cases comparable to the new gear 20 ilvls higher. The new gear is gated behind tome caps and rng on drops/weekly lockout, so the brand new crafted gear is often the best gear available for the rabbits pushing the hardest content when it's first released.

Also nobody mentioned zodiac items!

Crafting is a way to earn gil that you later use to buy things. Some quests like the relic at certain points require gil to buy items, and also to obtain materia, buying it is one option. But gil is not very important in the game and there are other ways to earn gil. Usually leveling a craft or gearing a crafting class needs you to spend gil (or a lot of gil) that you will recover in the future.

Being able to repair your gear everywhere is also very practical.

Being able to craft gear or food or housing items without buying it is also practical and to some people make them feel good. For example to level a new class you can craft gear you need.

You don't need to level a crafter, and it takes time too. It's another thing you can do. I started to craft while I waited the queues leveling the THM for swiftcast cross-class skill.

i want loads of gil even though there is nothing relevant i can buy with it

not even a house since i live inside the mossy rock on my fc's front lawn

If you don't enjoy crafting, there are other ways to make gil that are just as good.
If you like to know that you can make whatever, whenever you need it, that's my reason for crafting.

I craft so I can make gil, so I can give it away and feel charitable, since I cant afford to give away money in real life.

for realsies.

Its like this. If you enjoy crafting then craft.

If you don't craft, gather, or wish to buy a house you don't really need gil.

Spiritbonding. I know people who spiritbond 4-5 hours a day and make 3 million gil.
I've personally tried it too, and it has real potential, I just choose to craft since it's easier and I don't have to compete for mobs.

You can fully SB a set (6 crafter set from Mor Dhona, 5 Accessories) in about 40 minutes. that's at the very least 6 craftsman's materia III, and 5 materia III. Get a tier 4 on any of them bad boys (10% chance), and it's more than likely 300k+ right there.

Self repair at ANY time.
Glamor Prisms
Food for raiding.
Potions/Posions for raiding.
Making the best Crafting/Gathering Gear.
Housing items.
Minions.
Making Gear to Spiritbond.
Making Gear to Desynthesis.
Making weapons for your first relic.
Making Zodiac quest items.
To get some use out of all those shards and crystals.
You'll be useful in your Free company.
Making those Elitest crafted accessories which are a huge Gil sink.
Gil.
More Gil.
Even More Gil.

Trust me I know this stuff.

I love crafting and the marketboard. I love filling up my retainers and then go off gathering unspoiled nodes. Feels gloriously efficient. Crafted gear isn't exactly irrelevant though, especially when it is just released ( usually with a new raid tier too ). Currently gonna put some gil together for expansion I guess. I can imagine myself wanting a crafted lvl 60 set asap.

You can run the hardest content in the game with fully melded crafted gear. A fresh level 50, pops on 110 crafted gear without melds and can roflstomp everything up to turn 5 maybe more.

Time considerations, you can't gear up all of your classes in Tome and dungeon gear.

You put dungeon drops ahead of crafting in your branching. But that's not really how it plays out. Yes the highest tier dungeon drops are better than crafted gear. But you can't run that dungeon without high level gear. If you don't pony up for 110 gear, you have to run all the mid level dungeons that you already did with your main ad nauseum.

Challenging content isn't locked behind BiS. BiS makes things easier; it isn't necessary. This goes for crafting & gathering as well.

It is nice that don't have to worry about gils and repair bills. all 4 star gears only take couple mins to make and it sells for million gils. Plus it is fun to help other people out as a crafter.

Ultimately, there are three reasons to craft:

1. Make gil by making items and selling to other players.
2. Save gil by making items for yourself instead of buying.
3. For the enjoyment of crafting, playing the markets, or feeling like an entrepreneur/small business owner.

The only equipment that you can make that is arguably superior to the higher ilvl items you can get as drops or with tomes are crafted jewelry overmelded with materia to have two primary stats (usually Vit + your class's primary). Since these are tradeable, this technically falls under reason #2.

As far as left side equipment, it isn't much better than comparable non-crafted and falls behind higher ilvl pieces. It takes a lot of time and work to be able to craft i110 and afford the materials. Crafting is ultimately not an efficient way to gear your left side in the grand scheme of things.

I think that endgame craft and combat are similair.
Combatant clears next content - for what? To get new drops and to be able to gearup to clear next content. I don't see any great formal difference with crafters. Able to craft artisan & masterbook tokens = t5, Supras = t9, lucus & master 2 = t13???
I don't see many players who clears regullary T13 and i see very few crafters in my world who sells regullary 4 star items.

I refuse to believe this is true. Not that I'm familiar with Phoenix, but Ultros has people selling T13 clears, and the #1 Party Finder search is a version of "Crafting as a service"

I'm in a crafting FC. The point of the FC is to prep for this endgame/FC crafting that is coming. Build Airships etc. I'm hoping we get all World First Airships. That should get people into applying to the FC.

On Jenova, there are only 2 or 3 statics that cleared T13. and Party finder is empty for the most part. Usually it'll have things like Coerthas FATE party, DD 1st room clear, Tex clear etc. Sometimes you see coils, but it's usually T9 try, or T9 sure clear etc.. nobody's selling clears at the moment. People need time to get caught up.

As for crafting as a service thing in pf.. there's one group of people trying to push that but there's simply not enough demand.

But there's still plenty of 3-4star crafters pushing out items it's just not systematic.
