No.

Yes.
It makes you hate and curse the RNG whenever you try to convert i49s.
The only thing it is good for right now is pretty much to be transmuted into other kinds of materia. I have no idea if they were any good or not in 1.0 but they certainly aren't right now.
No, not really. Honestly most "elemental" attacks that mean anything in terms of damage aren't affected by resistances.
As for 1.0, yes they could be melded to weapons and they were pretty on par with Magic attack bonus in terms of potency for BLM and WHM.
pissing people off
Yea, they should probably either remove their existence in general or make a need for them. It's annoying when a whole spiritbind set turns out to be Wind/Water IV materia. It'd also help the market.
Meld them into other gear = faster spiritbonding.
I have been wondering why elemental stats/materias exist since the first days of alpha. They have no use in this game, the only time I have seen any elemental stats do anything is the shiva weapon in snowcloak and shiva herself. Makes me facepalm so much I might actually need a bandaid.
They should be removed or put to use, right away.
There are only two things elemental materia is useful for:
1) Melding to gear your spiritbonding to boost the rate of getting the melded gear bound.
2) Materia transmutation.
That's pretty much it.
FTFY. Transmutation is far from 'good' and can, more often than not, just give you another elemental materia for your troubles. Converting 5 T4 earth materia into a T4 fire materia made me want to strangle a moogle. I wish they'd kill the randomness of transmutation, so that alike materia produce like identical results. After all, why would 5 battledance materia suddenly turn into a Quickarm materia? They're not even remotely close in ability or hue!
tbh i think the momment they decided to make elemental attributes not relevant for us and the monsters, the elemental materias should have been erased.
but... at least they can be melded to gear to make spirt bonding faster and not waste a possibly good enough materia for this...
It increase the speed of spiritbounding by 10% for the melded gear. And you can use 5 elemental materias to get one random materia.
The stat of the elemental materias need to get increased to make it also for combat useful. For now it is your "it failed" drop.
well yoshida did said at the beginning of 2.0 that he might return the elemental system and other old systems later on in the game but it is all in the air as a dim possibility
1.0 elemental materia affected elemental potency. As a BLM, for instance, you could put on a bunch of lightning materia (thunder used to be the main single target spell instead of a dot) to boost your thunder magic damage. Some BLMs had a set of fire potency gear to increase their aoe damage, as well. WHMs were known to put wind materia on to increase their aero damage. Unfortunately, they did away with elemental based damage and made a very sought after type of materia into the most useless of materias.
I miss a lot of the features from 1.0...
Saving for the -ONE- chance that they would be relevant for relic upgrade.
Turns out I'm wrong but I'm still saving all mine just in case. <_<;
I actually wasn't aware that melding materia to equipment speeds up the spiritbonding process. Guess I must've slept through that class lol. Well now, that changes a lot...
Does the speed boost increase with each materia? And is it higher with higher lvl materias?
Yeah, I miss that some monsters were susceptible to different elements. It's been a regular thing in the Final Fantasy franchise that I was already well accustomed to before XIV, and I kinda took it for granted back then. Now they've removed it all together from ARR, which I think is a big shame. I see how it's kinda useless with the current spells available to mages, since fire is the only dd ability for BLM (because really; ice doesn't count, since it's mostly there for mana purposes). You wouldn't have any options.
Perhaps with later updates and a higher lvl cap, we could get more spells to choose from, that are all there for dd purposes. One of fire, one of ice, water, earth etc. And then give monsters their place in the elemental wheel again. This could also apply to weapons, for all classes/jobs, so as not to affect only mage players.
I dunno, just rambling down my thoughts here.
From my understanding the elemental resists give you a small chance to resist an attack entirely, so you would have something like Thunderstorm and take no damage. It would be nice for them to make these useful.
I always wanted to try it out too, get a set of ilv crafted gear. Pimp it out with elemental resistance gear and see what happens. It would be nice to give a elemental reduction in general rather than a chance at resisting entirely.
They could perhaps be useful if they got their own seperate materia slots on gear. At least then you would have no reason to not use them, besides laziness I guess.
Yes, there is a 'point' to it. Back when Titan HM was still considered very hard to beat, I remember reading a post by someone (Warrior) who'd melded a crap ton of Earth materia to their gear with the aim of mitigating Titan's elementally based attacks. According to that poster it worked (to a degree) and reduced the damage by something like 30%. But, personally I think you may be giving up a lot by having meldable gear, and melding only for elemental resistance. I can only think that if this works it is because even though the elemental effects of attacks and the resistance to them has been greatly de-tuned, the effects of elements appear to still be in the game.
I used to think that resistance in general was detuned to irrelevance, but then my retainer brought me the Gyshal ring which does help reduce the duration of heavy effects (or so it seems). Kinda makes me wonder whether we could look in more detail at status effects and how to mitigate them through gear more...
I'd like to think that at some point in the future, elements will become a bit more important to us again, not to the point of preferring one caster over another because of their elemental attacks, but at least to the point of making elemental resistance or elemental weapon enhancement have a point.
I wonder if one way to bring back elements would be to leave the magic based attacks of players as relatively unaspected damage, so that the lightning, ice, fire, wind, water aspects are more about the visual effect and what elements the caster is drawing power from for that attack, rather than the type of damage. But at the same time allow materia enhancements to weapons that add additional elementally aspected damage. That way a BLM would not be somehow the most preferred attacker against Shiva, because their fire based attacks offer no specific advantage. However if the player had melded fire materia to their weapon their damage would be enhanced with an amount of fire based damage based on the level of enhancement. This would mean that players would not be favored over one another because of their class, and it would definitely place an emphasis on crafted weapons that are meldable for elemental damage boost, allowing a player to perhaps carry specific weapons for specific fights.
Prognostication: Stockpile now while prices are low. 3.0 will change this.
