Feeling a bit of a shock at 50

So I got my first 50 not too long again (just started a month or so ago) and I have to say there was a lot of stuff waiting for me I just did not know where to begin.

So I have chipping away at things but I notice that a lot of the new patch instances (and thus story) is probably locked behind main quests and what not.

Is it reasonable for a new player to get through 3 or so prior patch worth of main story to experience the new dungeons and story with them?

Furthermore, when the xpac comes out, will have to have have completed all of the previous main story quest in order to progress in the new zones and such?

Just wondering, if so where should I start?

I would say keep doing main scenario, Unlocks new trials and dungeons etc, Start chipping away at the crystal tower quests and gear up with that/main scenario quests. Try to get all your daily roulette's unlocked I guess, Doing what you need to unlock all of that is a good place to start.

Welcome to the beginning of the game! I don't know if I'm allowed to link outside resources, but just a quick google search will land you over at Reddit's FFXIV subreddit. At the top of the header is a "Useful Information" tab and "I just hit 50. Now what?" It's really useful! I was wondering about that. I'm at iLv84 and now I can't do HL Roulette because I am avoiding the previous EX Roulette---don't want to tank for DPS who are +30iLvs from me, half the time they behave like I owe them money or something.

We could perhaps argue that there's the Crystal Tower for quick 80s then quick 100s, although that seems a little counter-intuitive for new players. Common sense would present that we start with the "light" party content, and progress eventually to the alliance. But no. Now new players should jump into and just grind CT for days until their LHS=100.

The high level roulettes merged together is a policy that benefits top-tier players more than newcomers. It is a barrier to the newcomers. If the high level roulettes were instead arranged into: 2.0 Roulette, 2.1 Roulette, 2.2 Roulette, ..., pre-2.5 Roulette, 2.5 Roulette, then newcomers can progress through each patch, with the "pre-2.5 Roulette" having the same iLv restriction as the 2.5 Roulette that funnels people into the 2.0~2.4 roulettes should they choose to do an extra roulette.

In other words, replicating the Sastasha~Aurum Vale leveling structure for fresh 50s. Giving newcomers (or in the current situation, latecomers) a clear path of progression. Then still have CT as the shortcut to the current content should people prefer.

Although I must acknowledge that catch-up designs are very difficult to pull off. SE has shown great effort in helping people to catch up.

this whole, need gear just to getbasic gear (ie whatever the current cheapy tome gear is) is just beyond dumb

Start off by clearing the main scenario quests. They "feel" long, but you can go through them in less than a week. After that get your relic going to unlock primals and unlock crystal tower. I feel this is the smoothest way to reach current content fast.

Just as a reminder, you can still do high level dungeons without using the roulette. They drop gear and give tomestones, too.

That's what we did before the roulettes were a thing.

Hunts, running the actual dungeons without roulette, HM trials, the towers, etc.
Three or four runs of the towers, especially with a sold bonus, will net you enough for a piece of left side gear.
The gap isn't as big as people make it out to be. It's there, yes, but you can skip a LOT of it by just doing the story. Your soldiery bonuses alone for just doing the main story will be enough for new gear.

Atleast boss chests drop gear and crafting mats at the same time now, instead of one or the other (usually, always the mats in my exp).

It's too bad for new players because they cannot experience those storyline dungeons/trials like they used to be. even if you're new, the other i100+ players will destroy everything like Castrum, Praetorium, Ifrit/Garuda/Titan HM, etc.

Welcome to endgame! Where the game truly begins! Level 1 to 49 were just tutorials xD

I suggest following the main scenario quests! They'll lead you to new areas and unlock new duties. There are side quests too that should appear in the city-states or near the area of main scenario quests so you may notice them.

If you're healer or DPS, endgame duties should be pretty easy. If you have to tank endgame duties with people that have so much high gear though, it might be a difficult. You can make a Party Finder group and look for people willing to help/run "without cutscene skipping", or you could find a good linkshell or free company that will help you out.

I also suggest getting your relic, even just the base item so that you'll have it ready if you ever want to continue that quest line.

Try to take it easy! This is an MMORPG... you're meant to enjoy the journey, not just the goals at the end!

Welcome to the Final Fantasy part of this MMO! The majority of people have been thoroughly enjoying the story, those who don't, click through it like everything else.

It's rough right now for new players because you're starting out at the end of a major version cycle. Fortunately, expansions are generally designed to be blank slates to encourage new players to get into the game. No one can tell you for sure, but more than likely you won't need to get through everything from 2.0 to get into 3.0.

The gap isn't as bad as some people make it. Realistically, before you start farming any gear, you want to finish the 2.0 story line, run any low level dungeons you haven't run yet, and unlock the Crystal Tower. That will get you the main scenarios roulette, flesh out the low level roulette, and then open up the hard modes. Then, start farming Soldiery tokens for weathered gear, running the hard modes, LoTA, and of course, working through the main quest line. A daily cycle at this point could be main scenario roulette->guildheist roulette->highest hardmode/LoTA you can run. You can do the low level roulette, but it's slow and you can complete hard modes faster for more tomestones. Your goal is ilvl90.

Once you reach ilvl90 you can completely finish the MSQ, trial roulette, and expert roulette, and start working on ilvl120 for Coil.

Your priority should be to finish your main story ( Praetorium) to unlock your relic quest and Crystal Tower. With the new daily quest, it's going to be really easy for you to farm your gear there. One of the rewards of the Crystal Tower chain quests is a Det IV materia, which can give you a great amount of money if you sell it on the market board. It's really useful when you're a fresh 50.
Do your low level roulette/story roulette so you can start buying ilvl 100 stuff quickly. You can also start your tribal daily quests as well.
Get to the top rank in your GC to begin hunts too.

took me like a week, to get f50, finish 2.0-2.4 all without doing crystal tower or coil, just doing the trials and dungeons as they come and getting tome gear while doing main quest stuff while waiting in DF. Its totally reasonable, getting to 50 was the hard part but you are here now. Just do whatever comes, and buy weathered tome gear for now, instant upgrade to ilvl 100 is the most natural and least complicated way to gear up, especially since everything gives you a noob bonus.once geared, just do all the stuff, and pick the 100+ gear a bit at a time, its not imperative compared to when you just turn 50 and need better gear right away.

I think its quite the opposite. I think you will have to have completed the storyline to gain entry to Ishgard. That's what the whole story is leading into...

Just take your time, there's no rush (aside from capping poetics every week).

I finally did the new Hildibrand quests last night. Laughed so hard. I also suggest chipping away at these quests OP. It's worth it.

I have heard a lot of people say things like this. With that said just over two weeks ago I rolled a new alt. (completely new) GLA no cross class, no mounts nothing. Inside two weeks ilvl 80 filled the gaps by doing main story and other various quest and such. Never touch a fate until ATMA, yes already have ATMA inside two weeks. Already ilvl 80 gear, with 2 pieces of ilvl 100 gear all inside two weeks. Weaver already inside the last leg to 50 on top of that. That was playing a few hours a night (roughly 4 hours) 10 hours on the weekend (Sunday only) Before you even say oh your a tank that doesn't count. ALL groups were Party Finder or FC. ALL relic portions were PF, FC.

The only issue I have with the new "gap" in gear is the ilv90 requirement for the newest dungeons. None of them need ilv90. You could probably go in at ilv70 without running into a single issue. Because there's so many gates to stop speed running your tank is basically being hit by a wet noodle the whole time. It gives healers more time to DPS at the risk of falling asleep out of complete boredom. The bosses don't hit hard. The only thing that might hit hard is the AoE/whatever damage if you don't do the mechanics correctly.

If they want to stop speedrunning and up the required ilv they should actually make that ilv necessary IMO.

For weapon, you can do the relict quest to get easy a ilv 90 weapon (around 3-4 days until Zenith)
For gear, you can do the first High Level dungeons to get gear that is better than the AF gear and to earn the first Soldiery tomes. Or buy crafted ilevel 70 gear in the Market Board, if it is not too expensive for you.

For Relict you have to finish the last job quest and the Story quest where you defeat Ultima Weapon in Castrum Meridian.

Also Low Level roulette will give you 100 Soldiery each day, Story roulette (both Castrum Meridian) 120 Soldiery each day + 20 Soldiery each run and the first 2 High Level dungeons 20 Soldiery each run. That would be 260 Soldiery each day if you do only Castrum Meridian and High Level dungeon once each day. That would be already 1 new ilevel 100 Soldiery equip every 2-3 days.

Find a list of the dungeons and trials and go through each one as you would normally moving up through the content. You'll get a lot of gear along the way and you'll be getting tons of soldiery that will easily get you to 100 before you know it. A lot of people are talking about the gap being too great but it's honestly very easy to gear up with soldiery gear at the moment. It quickly bridges you to a midgame ilvl,

But the thing is the ppl u get qeued with might be from the high roulette matching them up with you.
Because the point of roulette is to slot ppl in to spots needed to run that content. Thats why tanks and healers get fast qeues cuz the majority of the player base r dps.
So whether u like it or not u can ak normal and have everyone i30+ than u.

Lots of stuff hidden behind main story so just do that. You'll breeze thru it all due to ppl being very over geared and knowing the fight since its releases. Only thing tht will be tough is how i wanna approach the "carry" cuz it's kind of inevitable for new players to get forcefully carried thru content.

Also if you are a fresh 50 tank then you better have decent gear or else they will suplex u for losing hate and having non top tier gear like them.
Getting dunked like that on the 1st day on the job is pretty heart breaking lol.

Think my problem is I am an Alt a holic. I play my only lvl 50 (nin) for a while before wanting to start upping my Summoner or Paladin classes heh.

Congrats on 50! :D I'm almost there myself. I'm really looking forward to all the content. I've spent a lot of time getting to my level but my main story is as far as I can get it until I hit 50. lol

As a Tank just remember this: You are the one with the less queue time.

Say to the party at the beginning, that you are new at level 50 and that the DPS should limit thereself a bit if they see in their enemy list that their target get a orange dot. And if they don't like it, they can kick you (where you have a new party in less than 1 minute) and wait 5-20 minutes until another tank show up or left the party (where they get a 30 minute penalty)
