Opening movie crashes the game

I apologize for the trouble and frustration you have been going through with the game crashing. The thread was moved from In-Game Bugs to Technical Support. Unfortunately it seems to be a technical issue that Technical Support may be able to resolve. Thank you for posting!

Maybe a system codec is interfering. Not entirely sure how the game handles those.
You can still try to manually play it: "SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XIV\data\8A\D0\00\00.DAT"
MPC HC should work fine for that.

Thanks, I'm going to try to play it with that thing to see if the file is intact.

How does it crash?
Do you get a XIV-error message, or a windows error message?
If so, what does it say? If not, what happens to the program.
Does it just close? Does it go into "(not responsding)" mode? Is it a blue screen of death?

Right now I see the word "crash" and since I have no context I am imagining those automotive test-dummies...

Sorry, it's a Windows error. FFXIV has stopped responding. If it was a friendly error message I would have included it.

Then I suspect some form of processing problem, but it could be any number of issues.

I'd check your task manager for resource consumption. If it's through the roof (99-100%) then you may have found the issue. What are the rest of your system specs? Graphics cards are sadly not everything.

I played the .dat file in Windows Media Player with no problems at all, so the file is intact. Why is the game still crashing then when it tries to play it? I updated the OP with my specs.

Still crashing on 1.19.

Actually I tried it on 1.18 right before the patch and it was working fine. Imagine that. I viewed the file itself and it's fine. I think that's why it's a bug.

The problem you are experiencing is not necessarily a bug, as others would be experiencing the problem as well if that were the case. It could be as Catapult mentioned, and that your system is running out of resources as it is starting both the game and the opening movie, and this is causing the crash. We second his recommendation to check the task manager while the game is loading, to see how your system resources stand.

Its probably the drivers &/or codex as said, I had this or a similar issue when I did a reinstall ages ago with a new HDD, there was a setting in it that made it stutter, I followed the fix (virtually setting it to full default - one thing off) which caused it to crash.. After playing with it i got it working.

But that's the best I can do off the top of my head, I use a different card/drivers/whole pc and a different player/codex's now since my rebuild.
