obviously these are going to be upgrade from Supra. My only hope is that 399 gathering is enough to catch the clam, let alone hq.

I can only lol at the Ironworks Rod being made completely irrelevant so soon. I mean, at least the Rod of the Luminary is good for glamours. The boring Ironworks Rod isn't even good for that. I am hoping that clam requires 410 gathering. This requires people to get the rod to catch it. *evilgrin*
410 D: so mean
The clam is in South Bloodshore Eastern La Noscea and is listed before The Greatest Bream in the World, and is a white quality fish. Odds are it doesn't require more than the Supra+Food to catch. The moonstones and glacial shards are easy gets from GC seals (4k/600 seals each respectively). It's just pure stupid.
it wont be 410 cuz its impossible without ironwork rod , the rod just makes it easier for fishers that already have it , its not a must!
anyone else notice they are dye-able? hype-intensifies
Well guess it's good I got lazy and never finished the Ironworks rod. Reminds me of all the 1.0 work I did for luminary and poof gone but nice glamour though. I'll do the achievement some other day I guess now. Too soon though Yoshi.. too soon. Love new content but let players enjoy the reward a little longer. Grats to those who finished the Ironworks though and sorry I guess.
I'm hoping that Lucis won't be the next step up from Ironworks, but rather an alternate progression for fishers who don't want to take the Ironworks path.
Getting an Ironworks rod takes an awful lot of work. If SE plans on continuing to advance to higher-level fishing with higher-level requirements, they're going to need to introduce alternate rods with less of a time investment.
Forcing players who wish to advance to get an Ironworks rod would be akin to forcing DoM and DoW who want to advance to acquire a Zodiac weapon.
This is bullshit from the getgo because when they introduced the Ironworks Rod, they also introduced at least one fish that demanded it if you didn't have FC buff at your disposal (hint: many don't). The Lucis Rod is not only much better than the Ironworks Rod but also much easier to get. It's absolutely stupid SE did this and it's a major middle finger to people who worked on getting the Ironworks Rod because it has literally no use. And no not even glamour because it looks incredibly generic and dull compared to a Supra.
It would just be nice if something was worth more than just an achievement and not taken away after alot of time spent getting it in such short amount of time by the devs. Not everyone values achievements that much. That's just how the game is though.. very little value is placed on anything long term vs 11 but we get a ton of new content in short periods of time. I could care less about the ironworks achievement.. I'd much rather have a ebisu type rod that really means something that you can take pride in and show off to others for a long period of time.. tough to get worth equipping. But Yoshi doesn't place importance on longterm value which is good and bad I guess on top of his disdain for fishing as is.
example: buddy who just spent a ridiculous amount of time on the ironworks rod and just got it is livid today that it amounts to well .. nothing. An achievement only he will see. I guess there is a little pride in there somewhere and fun catching the fish but I am in no hurry anymore to finish that now. Hope this new rod last at least until Summer.
So the Lucis IS a step up from Ironworks, rather than an alternate progression. So very sad. I guess I shouldn't be TOO surprised, though; this IS the same company that brought crafters and gatherers achievement main-hands that were practically identical to existent main-hands and just as quickly rendered obsolete.
I got my Ironworks Rod just last week. I STILL haven't gotten my Rod of the Luminary (though I'm pretty darned close...).
The Luminary tools and rod has a purpose though as they look similar to the AF main hand but gold colored. Basically they have a glamour purpose and the goal of getting them has always been quite a heavy stretch. I wouldn't compare them at all to Ironworks (especially not since FSH does have its own Luminary Rod as well).
I was working towards ironworks but now it will be at a much slower pace since its no longer bis.. I still want to finish the challenge of catching all those fishies.
I'd figured the purpose of the Artisan's and the Ironworks would be for your Fishing Retainer, now.
Since you'll keep the best for yourself, giving the retainer the second best available only makes sense (unless said second-best is called for as part of a hand in to get the best).
My fishing retainer can already hit the new Rank XVI ventures with the Supra rod, so Ironworks isn't even good for that. :/
EDIT: Although since I'll need to turn in the supra rod to get the lucis, I guess I will need to give her the Ironworks, so eh...I guess it does work out in the end.
Guys guys...stop the riot...maybe they release 100 big fish more in the expansion and we have a new achievement called "catch 200 big fish"...and then you get an i110 rod, that could actually happen. Whatever new they release in fishing, you know you won't have to catch up because you've done the outdated work already.
Yeah that would probably cause even more complaints. Yoshi really does not need to be spamming new tools and another one for the expansion would be ridiculous. I thought they were going to do the same thing when I did all the work in 1.0 for my luminary and... nothing cept glamour. You can have the opposite effect if you push people to complete a task then more or less tell them.. ok thanks now throw it away. Albeit, this new rod is pretty easy to get this time around. The Clams will take a bit but the rest is easy.
I agree though that the percentages are high for Yoshi to do that again with big fish. I feel he sees the ironworks as a filler funsy rod to get you into big fishing while they keep the focus on the supra's, luci's and so on. Just like they do for doh. That will probably always be the primary focus for new tools and gear.
He just wanted people to have a goal to work towards focusing on big fish otherwise it is kind of a waste except for a few fish that are worth some gil and your personal achievement. Think of it as an extended selbina fishing contest except everyone gets the prize and it takes a lot longer.
I've been steadily working towards the Ironworks rod for a while now (still a ways off after many tens of hours and tons of gil). They should have made it a requirement for the Lucis in my opinion. I'm all for new shiny things, it just seems that the treadmill is resetting far too quickly. I really enjoy fishing, but this patch has definitely demotivated me.
Sadly, due to the way gear was implemented in this game, we'll never see anything like an Ebisu Rod. Or, for that matter, an "ultimate" anything. All gear has primary stats on it. As time passes, new gear is introduced with higher collections of stats. Even if the Dev team wanted to become creative, any cool bells and whistles they would put on a piece of gear will eventually become overshadowed by the item level creep. It's actually one of the most depressing things about this game; it's hard to become attached to any piece of gear, or feel any kind of thrill about obtaining a difficult-to-get item because you know in just a few months it will be, at the very best, a glamour piece.
Ebisu only worked as the ultimate rod in FFXI because fishing rods HAD no stats, really; at least, no visible ones. Any rod could be equipped at any level. The only "stats" one had to worry about was the kind of fish the rod could catch and how likely it was to break. Coming up with an ultimate rod was easy: make it unbreakable, and capable of catching any kind of fish. Then, give it a horrendous grindfest of a quest to obtain it.
One thing that I'm slowly coming to realize about FFXIV is that it's impossible to add endgame equipment, because there IS NO ENDGAME. Coil? CT? Ex Primals? Everything we have now is STILL just progression, for content yet to be released. The only way to have endgame equipment is for this progression to stop, a point where there's a cap to what you can achieve through normal gameplay leaving only expert-level content to advance further.
I believe that this game was designed with that in mind. By involving item levels that can take gear well beyond your current level, the potential is there to keep people playing by constantly moving the goalposts. Is this a wise way to design a game? I'm honestly not sure. I guess it depends on whether people are frustrated by the stuff they work so hard to obtained becoming quickly obsolete, or whether they're encouraged by the new challenges that appear.
Regardless of whether it's smart or not, it's what we have. The closest thing you'll EVER have to an "ultimate weapon" is a weapon that evolves with you. Relic weapon progression was, until recently, the only such evolving weapon in this game. Now, it's starting to appear as though Crafter and Gatherer level 50 quest tools are similarly evolving. "Side tools" like Luminary tools and the Ironworks Rod can be compared to things like Primal weapons - awesome when they are relevant, but doomed to be overtaken sooner rather than later.
I kind of DON'T want to see a Lu Shang's or Ebisu appear in the game, as it will be too depressing once that tool gets overtaken by ilvl progression. :/
MMOs never really finish (you can complete stories, though) unless servers go down like what happened with 1.0 but that's life, really. Once you've completed something, like the Ironworks rod, you either stay there and you're "done" or you grab the next opportunity to continue. :D
So far I have the 60 bamboo papers needed for Runi Lucis :-) hehe and 3 out of 20 Moonstones and 15HQ Roldolent Logs out of 99 needed, shouldnt take me too long to achieve this, in meantime i cna use Leves for Miner to start collecting the magicked oilcloths
Meh spent a lot of time getting ironworks rod just for this one to be easier to acquire but I'll get it also and give the ironworks to my retainer so he can hit the gathering number needed to do the new waterside gathering venture
