DDoS Still Affecting Servers???

so... as far as i know, SE hasn't apprised us on the situation with the DDoS attacks as of late. what is going on? and why is there still lag? Square Enix, please do something :/

IDK what you are talking about? The servers aren't being DDoS'd?

Check your connection or use a VPN of some sort. WTFast offers a free trial too.

i have been experiencing lag for the past two weeks now ONLY in this game. lag which hasn't been occurring in any other game. there are a couple games i play on PC, none of which experience any lag. plus i only play FFXIV:ARR on the PS4, and can't afford the router from WTFast. (i don't even know if it has been released yet. or if they got the full amount desired in kickstarter. haven't been following.) it is also possible for me to play DC Universe Online with the PS4 and have zero lag. but yet the moment i log in to FFXIV:ARR lag quickly appears.

also, unless SE specifically states the DDoS attacks are no longer occurring... we must assume that they are still occurring.


EDIT : apparently the kickstarter project failed to receive enough funding. and it will be a long time before the router ever lands. so using WTFast on the PS4 isn't going to be possible for me. also i am actually a subscriber and use WTFast on the PC. one of the games i play is hosted out of Seoul, South Korea.

lag which will abate as soon as students return to school and stop saturating the internet with netflix and other games.

Not sure where to begin with this. I don't think you understand exactly what DDoS'ing is.

The issue is more than likely is your connection, and how it travels to the FFXIV server that you connect to. This topic has been stressed and talked about at great length on the forums.

I wasn't recommending their router at all. Hell, I wouldn't even buy it, although I think its an interesting product. They offer software that can improve your ping, and can vastly improve your connection to any game, including FFXIV. They offer a free trial, so why not try and see if it helps? I would say that if you tried it and set your connection to Toronto - if that does indeed help - then that is the issue (how your connection is traveling to the FFXIV server). Since I have been using it, I very rarely ever experience lag. If I log into the game without it, I can definitely tell I don't have it on - longer load times, market board lag, sometimes people just skate around or just stop moving altogether, random 90ks, 2012's...

also, like previously mentioned, i can't use WTFast on the PS4. and again, i am familiar with WTFast, as i am a subscriber of an advanced account. without it, it is near impossible to play games hosted in South East Asia. i live on the US East Coast.


i have also checked my route through features on my router. the route has been unchanged since starting to play this game. and there doesn't seem to be any overloaded nodes. and have also already contacted my ISP. they state there have been no report of any technical issues in either my area or the route being taken to FFXIV:ARR servers.

Well then, not sure what else to recommend my friend. Hopefully someone else has something to suggest or SE is able to assist. Good luck in getting it figured out.

I wonder if the issue is something similar to this, which was just posted the other day?

You definitely have problems along your route that seriously need to be addressed by your ISP. I too live on the US East coast, South Carolina. I typically get shot through Raleigh, Charlotte, or Atlanta after going through Columbia--most often I wind up hitting Ashburne/DC before jumping to the Chicago for the NSA scan, and then get thrust through the North East (NY/NJ most often), then either over to Toronto or directly to Montreal. The few times that I have had issues with games (and yes, even to Japan), they have been addressed and resolved by my ISP--Time Warner in fact, believe it or not. Barring the times it has been announced to be server problems or the one time we found issues with one of the VLAN's on Ormuco's side last year (which, again my ISP helped verify and we then contacted their network admin about and it resolved the next week), EVERY time it has been a problem that existed on the other side of my modem, but before the ISP of the destination servers (thus making it my ISP's responsibility to investigate and pull in someone to address the problem, as it is their policies that have put me on that troubled route). The fact that you admitted you have to use a VPN on your PC to stabilize your session clearly demonstrates you have a routing issue--that is essentially what using a VPN does, it bypasses routing rules/policies that are negatively impacting your traffic.

You need to get your ISP's Tier3 team involved. Since you are on a console and may not have the proper IP's to use for your specific connection (though, you may be able to get that data from tools in your router), I will provide the registered DNS names of the lobby servers so they can run some tests for you. It is imperative that you push for this Tier3 team (sometimes referred to as Engineering)---they are the ones with the resources to conduct a proper investigation and push for the needed escalation to get someone to address any issues they may find. The helpdesk guys that answer the phones and the techs that check your localized connection can't/won't do this--that is Tiers 1 and 2 at best.

Again... you NEED to be in contact specifically with Tier3 support to resolve routing issues if they are found.

As for setting up the VPN for your PS4 to use, this may be possible with your router (depending on it's capabilities). Some routers have the ability to set up a VPN connection for your entire network. If you are using a service that uses something like OpenVPN (basically, generic point-to-point type of connections like with Microsoft VPN config), you may be able to use the same credentials and IP to configure your router's VPN tool to set up a point-to-point connection for your entire network. Again, depends on what your hardware and your VPN service is capable of handling on whether it will work.

Likewise, you may be able to apply the same concept to your console. I don't have a PS4 so don't know for certain, but it may have a means to set up a VPN as well when you go into manually configuring your connection--would be along the lines of proxy setup if it's there. If your VPN service is using the more generic connections (OpenVPN, PPTP, etc.), you may be able to use the same IP and credentials to manually set it up on the console the same way you may be able to with a router.

well i don't know anything about tier3 support. but they already came out and checked everything in the house and up the road. he even said they would check further up the lines, and found nothing wrong. he did route tests and nothing showed anything wrong. all-in-all every time i try to get help from Time Warner they charge me 16$. so maybe next month when i can afford more tech support or whatever. i don't know what the ef they do, but they never help worth a damn. however, i will ask about that the next time paying the bill.

You've been dealing with just Tiers 1 & 2... more localized support. You have to ask specifically to be escalated to tier3. Unfortunately, according to what some have posted here, some of the locals will resist or play dumb when you ask for it--may have to ask for a supervisor if dealing with them over the phone. Otherwise... have you tried their forums, twitter, or even email? I don't use twitter, but the email address is posted off and on at their forums:

They may make you run through the gambit of copy/pasting signal logs and maybe running some traces and such... but it tends to work better then using the phone. IF I catch issues before they do, that's where I send all my data and they get on it. But, haven't had to do that in a while... they've been staying on top of it pretty good for the most part since we got more aggressive with it last fall when we found the CMTS was really out of whack (was only bonding half the channels it should, and the whole area was suffering from it).
