Suggestion to Dev add Controller Role

The Holy Trinity was originally Controller, Healer and Tank because Dps was a given. Like tanks and healers Bards have a permanent slot in end game raids because of the utility they bring taking pure dps spots. I suggest adding a Controller Role and putting the Bard, Summoner and Machinist in that role.

The only game that I know of with a Controller role is DCUO, and while supposedly being crowd control specialists, they were turned into group MP generators.

We already have crowd control abilities scattered throughout all the classes, so there is little point in making that a focus. SE has already talked about adding a Support role instead.

Never heard it described as "controller", rather as "support". Like Bards in FFXI or how paladins in WoW were shoe horned into during the Molten Core days. IIRC, the creator of Everquest said the original trinity was suppose to be tank, dd, and support rather than healer... which healers were a subset of.

Seems only DCUO called it that like Numenor1379?

A support role is just there for the sake of it. You have a healer and any other cooldowns can be given to damage dealers. Support role just increase party sizes and have to be OP just to make them useful meaning if you don't have one you are screwed.

u can add controller : CC , debufs (think Red mage in FFXI , enchanter in EQ)
support : bard / corsair in FFXI

but none of that will happen , the trinity is here to stay , why? light party of 4....and forcing ppl to take support for full partys or riot :P and we know how many ppl like to play the support role :rolleyes:

Wrong, very wrong, it was stated a lot of times that this game was designed with 4 roles in mind, it's not controller tho, it's hybrid, Yoshi decided to delay it to keep the system simple for those new to MMOs.

About the support role, Yoshi already said no, he wanted to implement an hybrid role later in the game, not support.

A Controller in DCUO is not a support class. Without one all other players have extremely limited use of their powers and end up having to resort to weapon attacks. In addition Trolls were usually the second class in terms of Damage Output. Most groups always had a Troll or two (depending on content being run), but both Healers and Tanks couod and would be left off the roster. The system there was a Quartet instead of a Trinity.

The original "holy trinity" term didn't refer to roles anyway, it referred to three specific classes in the original EverQuest - Warrior, Cleric, and Enchanter. The idea was, even by the time the first expansion came out, those classes were so good at what they did that you needed them to form any group, and other classes were just sort of...there. Remember that in the EQ days you needed a group to do anything at all.

The OP is somewhat right though, in that Warrior was a tank, Cleric was a healer, and Enchanter had the best crowd control. Again, because you needed a group for everything because even regular mobs were very difficult to grind for EXP, you also needed someone to perform crowd control functions in all of them. Of course there were more pure DD classes, but the "holy trinity" is what you needed to get things done.

Yes, something so few gamers seem to grasp is that the idea of a group murderkilling 10 mobs at a time is a newish concept that only really got steam in 2004. "AE Farms" from EQ not withstanding.
Back in the old days, TWO mobs could potentially wipe your entire group if you didn't have crowd control of some kind. It forced players to get creative if they didn't have those roles, but in general just involved 5 dudes sitting at the entrance to a dungeon waiting for one of the Holy Trinity to go LFG while dodging trains from people who tried to go without one. They fixed it, since making 9 of your 12 classes almost completely pointless if the other three weren't there was stupid, but for a time...it was rough.
I played a cleric so I never wanted for groups mwahahaha.
I'd say players today are "spoiled" but...honestly I'd never go back, and there's a reason changes were made.
Hybrid sounds like an interesting concept, though. I'm glad they're taking the time to hammer it out since it's really hard to make a jack-of-all-trades class.

My favorite class ever of all the games I've played (and there's lots) is Enchanter in EQ. Much like kyuven, I never wanted for a group. If you didn't have slow and or CC in your group, you went slowly and it was rough on the healer or you just couldn't do it.

Sadly, I don't think the FFXIV content outside of the very difficult raids really call for support classes and it doesn't look promising.

Oh is that why there's extra dps slots in everything. 2 for Raids and 1 more for 4 man dungeon.

I hope the hybrid role hasn't been scrapped honestly but I fear it has since we haven't really seen or heard much about it. It sounded really cool and could potentially lead to more creative play styles and jobs. Plus it could fit Dancer, Bard, Red Mage and possibly Summoner very well.

What are controllers supposed to do beside taking a spot in the new party organization ?

Inb4 there is a dungeon in the expansion like the original WoW BC Shattered Halls. If you wanted to go there as a dps you either had a reliable CC ability or you were not invited. Packs of 5+ mobs who could crit for like half the tanks HP each.

For a "Controller" role to exist, content throughout the game - from ten/fifteen up to fifty - would have to be adjusted in such a way to be dangerous enough to mandate its existance. Anywhere groups come up, for it to be an actual role as opposed to what it currently is - a handful of abilities on a handful of classes - it would have to have presence and be part of 'the formula'.

It'd be a massive undertaking to restructure, and to be completely honest I'm not entirely sure I'd call it all that valuable.
