The Unfortunate Nexus: PLDs Who Forgot to Soulglaze One or the Other

I've heard of three instances of the following situation happening: For some reason or another, a PLD has either the Sword or Shield at Nexus, and not both. One was confirmed to be because the player forgot to Soulglaze the Shield entirely, instead assuming that both the Sword and Shield were glazed at the same time. The other two were just people I saw Light Farming with a Nexus in one hand and a Novus in the other.

Both the Sword and the Shield individually require 2000 Light to be attuned. It is thus ideal to have both equipped at once at all moments in which Light can be awarded as it is given to both at once. Any PLD in the situation of having one Nexus but not the other has gotten 2000 light. They've completed the same amount of grind that any other job must, and it was just a mistake that the other wasn't attuned at the same time.

This is a 35-40 hour mistake. Do you think it would be remiss or unfair if SE were to, say, give PLDs who made this mistake a free "make the other tool Nexus" token to prevent them from having to farm up to 2000 more light than any other class because of this mistake?

I think that would be fair, as I can see many people making that mistake.

Why would you assume that they both happen at the same time if you're not using both at the same time?

I agree with gorn. If you don't have the novus equipped, why do you think you get light towards it?

I would be completely against this idea as it is very unfair to everyone else.

People would abuse that. You don't reward people for making mistakes. Otherwise they would never learn from them.

I know someone that did this on my server....I feel a bit bad. I myself didn't realize until i had 100 light on the sword that the shield needed to be soulglazed also so I didn't get hurt too badly. I do think the quest needs to be changed and addressed that BOTH need to be soulglazed or automatically soul glaze them both. Heck a pop up box saying, "This is to only soulglaze the curtana. Are you sure?" would be suffice.

The option to soulglaze the holy shield Novus is RIGHT below soulglazing the curtana Novus. I'm not sure how you could miss that unless you were in an extreme rush or something. :I

My argument here is that a Paladin who has done this has still obtained 2000 Light and done the same amount of grind as any other Job is required to do. Screwing up the process somehow currently forces them to get up to 4000 at the most extreme case. No other job is subject to this sort of situation. This wouldn't be able to be abused to let a Paladin get their Nexus faster than other jobs; they still need 2000 Light on one or the other.

Realizing that you have to spend 35+ hours grinding out the other item after you've finished the first is not the kind of punishment that makes someone learn from a mistake. It's the kind of punishment that makes someone quit the game entirely.

But, if you still don't like this idea... how about a compromise? If a PLD is wielding a soulglazed Novus at the same time as a Nexus, all light gains are multiplied by some amount. It would at least make the "punishment" grind smaller.

Rushing through the quest and not paying attention when the prior steps before it use a similar formula is beyond a simple mistake, as you said yourself that's 30-40+ hours of work put in, i would imagine at any point they would have come across another Paladin with the sword and shield equipped for light farming and realized you needed both.

While this seems extremely unfortunate (and probably rare) it wouldn't really be right to just give them a free pass for basically not paying attention to the quest and rushing along.

I think some people here are missing the point. It's not that people want to cheat the system by using a stronger shield or whatever (seriously, it's not like that many shields are better than a novus shield anyway, and most of the people that have better shields probably don't give a hoot about nexus anyway) but that something like this is potentially easy to overlook considering how there was one earlier step of the upgrade path that treated the sword/shield as a set.

You already can do things like acquire atma/alexandrite from FATEs without needing the shield equipped (it's linked only to having the sword equipped) so it's not like this would be something totally unprecedented.

I think, at the very least, a warning should pop up when you soulglaze one saying that it applies solely to that one and not the other. If someone still manages to miss that, then...

Happened to a friend in my FC. He forgot to soul glaze the shield and found out during completion of his sword.

Actually what I would suggest would be shortening the amount of light their Curtana needs to like 1400 and the Holy Shield to 600. That way it's more like the previous steps.
Zenith required 2 Oil things for the sword and 1 for the shield.
Animus required 6 books for the sword and 3 for the shield.

But keep in mind that to continue with the relics, both the sword and the shield need to be Nexus.
This would require a bit of new coding tho since they will have to change the Examine texts to lower numbers for the sword and even lower for the shield, but shouldn't be much of a problem. But just a freebie no. Absolutely not.

This would only be fair if the PLD were also allowed to build light on only one of the two pieces at a time, or if light from a run was assigned randomly to one piece or the other (but not both). It's fair the way it is right now. While a PLD does have to earn twice as many points as any other job, they also have the ability to earn points twice as fast (since they can equip two relics at once). While a PLD has to earn twice as many points, they only have to do exactly as many dungeons, trials, maps, etc as any other job.

The best way for SE to prevent this tragedy would be to require a PLD soulglaze both pieces at once - but this may not appeal to folks going for a "cheap" relic by upgrading ONLY the sword or ONLY the shield, and using other equipment for the other piece. Maybe a warning in the quest dialogue when you soulglaze one piece that the other will not be upgraded unless you soulglaze it, too? There's only so much SE can do to hold people's hands...

I thought that was implied lol. That's why I have examples. You can't work on 2 books at once for Animus. A character only gets X amount of light per Duty, regardless of how many Novus they have equipped. Jalzhan would have an option for PLDs asking which Novus you want to work on first. Whichever option you choose (Curtana or Holy Shield), that is the Novus that fills with light before the other.

There's also the possibility that they only worked up the sword because, well, the Soldiery and Poetics shields have been pretty good stand-ins for it leaving you free to ignore the Holy Shield. On top of that, the relic quests are annoying as hell for one weapon, heaven forbid two! Those with more than one relic past atma have been graced by RNGesus as a chosen one.

its my first novus so i had no ideal how novus farm works so i keep farming garuda and wonder why dont i get light and people would know how much light they have gotten.... so i asked them and they say did i soulglazed i was like wtf is that!? that was 3 hours after grinding on my ninja before i found out i need to soulglaze it.....

Seconding this. This is more in line with the other steps. Only one could gain light at a time, with the Curtana Novus taking precedence if both are equipped. Holy Shield Novus gains 0 light if Curtana Novus is equipped and not at 1400/1400.

EDIT: I changed my mind, the light can spill over from Curtana Novus when it's full. No reason for them to have to stop and go Nexus the Curtana before working on the Shield.

You should never underestimate the power that is tunnel vision.

I don't know how big of an issue this is. None of the PLD's I know made that mistake. And it's sort of a deserved slap on the wrist for not paying attention whats-so-ever. It's pretty blatantly obvious that you need to glaze and carry both. If you give people who do this an easy fix they may just end up making the same mistake in future upgrades or new relics(assuming you need to carry them again at some point).

I can confirm that I did this myself. My thought was that I could only do one item at a time just like the Animus books. I was mistaken and missed out on 400 lights by the time I realized. That's okay because it wasn't too hard to make up what was left. But I feel bad for anyone that had to do 4000 lights.

Because up until this point you only needed 1 of 2 items equipped, this is the first time we have been forced to use both our relic sword and shield simultaneously.

No offense but that's kind of a stupid mistake. The only way you wouldn't have your Novus soulglazed would be if you didn't talk to Jalzahn, and why wouldn't you? You need to do a quest for the next step for every step since after Zenith. These kind of mistakes are not slight design flaws, but just absent minded players.

I agree with this, I mean what if Curtana was the last on the list for whatever reason? Are people just clicking without even checking the relic names? Holy Shield is right under Curtana. >_>

Denying that the Holy Shield is only the best AFTER nexus... it is different in that atma are individual normal items while light is something not unlike how the special drops from the beastmen fates were handled before they were changed. You can bank normal items as much as you want but that light can't unless you have the relic equipped that you want to to go towards. With how animus and whatever the step after it is works, it could be that the Paladin looked at the tome offerings and said, "Screw it, those look nicer."

Why would it not soul glazed? Is there a reason to not soul glazed why is the step even needed? And the whole is new to me so I was not aware of the process

Solution: getgud, learn2read. saying all that is as good as that PLD on our server who forgets to equip his shield and went into coil.

I don't understand why you wouldn't have both equipped at the same time, isn't it common sense to do so? :s

Simply just make farming 2000 lights as a one time process for all your relics.

Since now players can farm item in other jobs for Nexus upgrade,
IMO it should not require players farm lights with each relic equipped anymore.

Forgetting to equip the shield at all is your own mistake, just because other phases have made you prioritize one before the other doesn't mean they all will.

It'd have been nice if there was ever any point to getting the shield as its never been worth it to use, the allagan shields have been so much better and easier to get, I'd prefer it if the sword and shield were completely different quests

However its easy to get your sword and shield at different lights, I myself have my sword at 1800 lights and my shield at about 1750 due to not using it to learn any hard content and not getting the high allagan sword to drop.

My sword is 120 light behind because I made that mistake, but it is MY mistake, not Square's. So it is up to me to fix it and not try to use puppy sad eyes to get things done.

It's not gonna be soul glazed until you do the quest. It doesn't just automatically become soul glazed once Novus. It's not part of the Novus quest at all. It's part of the Nexus quest. I'm confused why you're not aware of any of this. Every single relic quest except Zenith had you do some sort of quest involving Jalzahn. So why does this confuse you? Did someone else do everything for your relic before this lol?

Thank for the pure insult, but i did all my relic all by myself and for the record i80 to i90 has no quest is a different set up by handing in to the station beside it is a totally different set up for a first timer this is very confusing for me on the novus part but i am sorry i cannot be as smart as you that been said we done here

SE could easily make it so both weapons for the pld are souglazed at the same time to prevent player from "forgetting" to do it. In the pic that Coatl provided, they could easily move the shield to the same line as the sword and just put & in between.

From there, whether or not the player equips both for light farming is another matter.

Eh, honestly, it's right there in black and white (well, purple and white) that you need to glaze both the sword and the shield. This isn't SE's fault at all. I don't see how people not paying attention should entitle them to a free fix for their mistake. I honestly am baffled that you could miss it in the first place; I know when I do my relic quests I carefully read through all of the quest text to make sure I'm doing it right and not missing anything, simply because the relic IS such a huge investment of time and gil. Why take a chance by skimming it?

How do you go through the entire soul attune process and not think ONCE, "oh hey, my sword and shield are constantly identified seperately at both the relic NPC and the soul attune lens".

If your sword is shown as distinct and your shield says no aetheric activity and you still keep doing only the sword, you deserve to have to do that extra 2000 lights.

I could also see an implementation where if you don't have both equipped at the same time, you don't get any Light. Instead, you get a notification stating that you need the other equipped to gain Light.

I feel your pain cause I just made the exact same mistake. I never knew I was wrong till I turned it in and found out shield needed to be soulglazed as well. Nothing indicated I was wrong, didnt know I should be seeing 2 items with the glass. BLM is my main and I got it to Zodiac with no issues, was doing PLD as a side job and never noticed the line below for the shield specifically. True they were always seperate steps, but each step was always 2/3 sword 1/3 for shield (ie 2 thavarian mist for sword/1 mist for shield, 6books for sword/3 books for shield, 2 inks for sword scroll/1 ink for shield scroll, 53 alex for sword meld/22 for shield meld), so if this step was seperate why isnt it like 1400 light for sword and 600 for shield, or even 1000 for shield that way it gets done first like most did when upgrading, then you'd need an additional 1000 to finish sword? So yea, my mistake for being used to a different class and not noticing the specificness of PLD
