Stop turning in quest items the hard way

I never understood why people complained about quest item turn-in being clunky until I realized there was a Hard Mode, and if you're using a gamepad, that's the only one the game tells you about.

Here's what you're presented with:

If you're using a mouse, maybe you're trying to find & select the item out of your inventory. And all those icons are the same. If you're using a gamepad, it tells you to press the confirm button (mine's a 360 controller, if you're using a PS3/4 controller, that green A is the X button icon). If you do that, this is what you get:

Same thing as the mouse. You've got to find the right one and click it if you do that.

Don't do that. Instead, in the Item Request window, either right-click (for mouse users) or press the Square/Map/Subcommand button (for gamepad users) on the item to be turned in. Then you get this:

The item you need to turn in is selected, it's the only one selected, and you just click and go, no choosing. If an HQ item is what's needed, and you have NQ, it picks the HQ. If you can turn in either HQ or NQ (e.g., a leve), you can pick either one.


Edit: And from posts further on, if you end up in the inventory window anyway (after spamming Confirm on the controller), you can Cancel once to get back to the Item Request window and do it this way from there. So it's spam X until window changes, Circle Square X X. That's still faster for me because by the time I'm doing these quests my inventory is generally a mess. XD

I found this out on accident after months of doing it the hard way.

This was honestly one of the first things I ever tried to do. It really is easy mode for turning in items.

And they've made a lot of advancements on it. It used to be so easy to turn in the wrong item, like a piece of materia slotted gear when you really wanted to keep that.

If I had found this before I capped all my DoH, life would've been so grand.

At least I still have quests that require items to do! :D I have to give you a Like because there is not a Love button. :D

Just going to give this a little bump because I posted it at kind of an odd time last night, and now the East Coast is at work and bored. >.>

Yep, me too. I don't even remember "discovering" this, just always thinking "It's just two clicks, why is this a big deal?" anytime I saw a complaint about item turn-in. Took so long to post because I never even thought about the hard way existing. o.o

Never stops amazing me when I learn new things for a game I play daily for over a year. Thank you for this, it will come in handy for the beastman turn ins.

Surprised people don't know about this already but oh well we all find new things out nearly everyday.

Surprisingly I didn't even think to do this.

I say surprisingly because I spend a lot of time crafting, and that's essentially how I select gear when an actual piece of gear is used as a mat.

So why didn't I think of this for hand ins >.<

I guess because I don't find the hard way to be hard. It's never bothered me. But of course now that I know there's this way, I'll use that one more :D.

To be fair, this selection method is the DEFAULT selection method while crafting; press the regular action button (X button on Playstations) and it brings up an abbreviated list like the OP demonstrated. The default for quest turn-ins with the action button, on the other hand, is to plunge you into your inventory and make you search for it yourself.

I, too, never realized there was an alternate method using the square button. I'll have to give this a try!

This is amazing information. I play on Gamepad and this will be great.

However, after turning in things the Hard mode way for over a year, my brain will need some reconditioning now. I will have to learn the exact time to stop spamming the confirm button past all the unnecessary text on beastmen turn-ins and hit a timely square for it to actually save me time now.

Is it bad when you get proficient at doing things the hard way to the point where it's quicker than using turn-ins for dummies? Lol.

I think it's probably quicker for me to just put my confirm button on rapid fire and select from the inventory for ixali quests. I group them together while riding along on my choco heading back for turn in, and the key items are in the right order if you do Merdonna before CCH.

This is exactly what I do lol. The info is good to know for other things, like when patches bring out new fetch quests in the future, but have gotten so damn proficient at those Ixali turn-ins that breaking my process will actually hinder me rather than save me time.

Haha I've been using the easy method since the game came out and it never occurred to me that other people might not have figured it out but this thread makes it apparent that lots of people don't know this. I'm going to have to ask my buddies who play with controller if they know this now. Good advice OP.

Lol this. It was the first thing I tried, pretty sure the game even tells you you can deliver items that way in the active help... And I'm a newb to FF14.

Honestly they should just remove the quest item inventory pop up, and just make us deliver the god damn item directly. There is no need to present the inventory if you just right click -> left click the item and then click Hand over.

They could even just not have us do this at all and just turn in the quest directly...

It's another useless "feature" which only wastes more time than necessary ^^

I think I found out about this around the same time there were all those 2.0 server errors and no one could log in right. Edit: Wow! I can't talk right. Semi-fixed sentence now...

Spam 0 on the numpad and you can fly by dialog, slap confirmations, drop off items, and log you in (as OP said sometimes confirmation doesn't work though).

I would suggest anyone who did not know this go back and read through the Active Help guides, just incase there are any other missed qol tid bits. This was covered fairly early in those when controller was selected for input, appearing when you are first introduced to being the golden pizza deliveryman of lore in msq2.

The active help guide is different depending on which input you have selected at the time, and is very easy to turn off intentionally or not at the very start. I also do not recall the kb/m version mentioning this shortcut at all, just clicking on the item.

Whatever happened to that thread, where people were posting all these QoL things in game, and everyone was like oh wow i never knew that. There was tons of things in there. I remember mainly because the QoL item OP is bringing up, I brought that same subject up in that thread long ago...

Is there any alternative when selecting gear items as crafting materials? While Bixby's suggestion will be nice for Ixal quest turn-ins where the items involved have literally no other purpose, I hate having to select gear as a crafting material that way.

If I'm going to destroy a piece of gear to make something else, I want to really see which piece of gear it is, in particular whether it's in my inventory or my armoury chest, and whether it's in any gear sets. So is there any way to reach what the OP refers to as "Hard Mode" selections when selecting an item to craft with?

Well, if it's in your armoury chest, it won't let you select it as a crafting material to begin with ("You do not have the required materials in your inventory"). So if you want to keep from using something for a craft, you can temporarily put it in your armoury.

I don't think there's any way to choose the item through the regular inventory, though. You have to use that little sub-window with just the acceptable items and look at the tooltips.

Thanks for this. I already knew it, I figure I stumbled upon it some time ago, but it's nice that someone is spreading it to a wider audience.

I usually use this for most things, though I use the "hard mode" for triple turn ins and when I'm turning in something I have a variation I want to keep. For the former, if I've sorted everything, it is four button presses to six, two for each item.
