Something like a HD6850 or GTX550 works for this game to play on high settings. Those cost about 140 bucks. Your PSU needs to be powerful enough though(at least 400W).
How would I find out information on my PSU?
Computer illiterate, sorry. ^^; Thank you for the response however!
Also, which is better? HD6850 or GTX550? The former is pushing $160 and the latter is $140. So I'm curious as to what your input would be.
The output power rating should be somewhere written on the PSU. And the HD6850 is definately a good 25% faster. The only advantage the nVidia card has is the hardware-PhysX support. But after some thinking I would recommend a GTX460 over the GTX550 if you need the PhysX support.
If you are looking for a very good performance:cost ration, I suggest a GTX460. I have one with 768mb of GDDR, and most come with 1024mb of GDDR5. I spent about $120 on mine, but that was last September or October. On an i5 w/ 4gb of RAM that lets me run at General Draw Quality 8, Ambient Occlusion off, all other settings maxed. Full screen or windowed 1080p.
460 GTX will demolish the 550 GTX Ti. Should be a little cheaper as well as much better. Grab the 1GB Version if you can. You wont regret it.
Betting you that your 768MB 460 GTX is out of V-Ram and tapping into the 4GB of ram to keep that up unless your not running AA. My 560 GTX Ti @ 1440x900 Windowed mode with 8xQ MSAA 10 general drawing, 5 background drawing, highest shadows, high texture and highest texture filtering bring it to around 988MB of V-Ram.
If it is, not like the ram is being used for anything else.
Looking at this...

What do you all think...?
That's a great card actually.
Still, if you don't have a good enough system overall it will be bottlenecked and you won't see it perform to 100% of it's potential.
Do you know at all what is actually inside your PC?
Like what CPU?
PSU is important too, it usually has a label on one of the sides of it that tells what make and brand it is.
Minor question, my new computer that I am getting soon has this card. Radeon HD 6570. At the moment my computer sucks and I am the LOWEST possible visual, texture, and graphic settings so I am super excited about the new computer. Anyone think this will be a big improvement?
Right not im playing the game on a 3100, I can use standard settings its just my processor doesn't handle cause my processor is crap. I'm thinking with my new computer (i7) i'll be fine.
get a radeon HD5670. I play everything on high with that (of course I also have a quad core processor @3.4ghz). Just can't turn on Depth of Field or Ambient Occlusion
if your new PC has a core i7 then you'll probably want to get something like the 5770/6770 then since those are relatively cheap and give you much much more performance.
With an i7 (which is highend) you need a highend GPU of course. I would recommend a HD5870 or HD6950. The latter is quite a bit faster but also more expensive(both have double precision if you plan on doing GPGPU stuff). I think there's some limited offer currently at newegg where you get a Deus Ex coupon with that card :P
I bought this card for my PC: http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=623542
It runs quietly thanks to 2 big fans for extra cooling instead of the tiny on at the end of the card. I am running everything on Highest. 1920x1080 reso and my fps seems to run smooth enough for my tastes:)
The pure 6970 may be more expensive, but with this card from Asus, you can buy the cheaper 6950 and alter its BIOS and it becomes a 6970.
I don't think every 6950 can be turned into a 6970. Also, while not a bad idea in general, it's probably not a good idea for a computer illiterate person to go for a card mod unless they feel like really looking into it. It shouldn't be that hard but my mother can't even read instructions that are in plain text on the screen in front of her, so it's hard for me to say what's easy and what's hard to less computer savvy people.
As far as the OP's question goes, it's impossible to answer without knowing what the rest of his system looks like. It's pointless to upgrade your graphics card if everything else in your system is ancient. You'll only create massive bottlenecks and won't get much extra performance from the upgrade. Likewise, you don't want to buy a high end CPU and then skimp on the GPU because the CPU sucks at graphics calculations and can't make up for the bad graphics card regardless. Balance is what you want from your system: Mid range with mid range and high end with high end. Low end won't get you anywhere, so always avoid that if you want to play games.
I play this game on a Macbook Pro using bootcamp with Windows 7. Macbook is 64 bit, but for some peculiar reason it says my Windows side is 32 bit.
Anyway, I can nearly run this game on full graphics. I only have ambient occlusion and depth of field turned off, as well as having General Drawing Quality at 7 - 8 (depending on where my laptop is sat at the time).
I find ambient occlusion tends to lag my game to a halt, even if my graphical settings are set to medium or low (maybe my graphics card).
I have an nVidea GeForce 9600M GT, and, as just mentioned, I can nearly run on full spec.
Not sure if you have found a graphics card yet, but if it's any help you could compare my graphics card (I know it's in a laptop!) to something you are thinking of purchasing.
I'd take everyone elses advice as well. Try to find out what is inside your PC so you can make the best choice for picking a card.
After installing the GeForce 460 I get this error when starting the game...

:(
You'll get a lot of info on that sort of error Via Google.
Try another hi end game or two, let us know what happens with that.
HD 6850 definitely for anyone wondering as well... Extreme performance especially for its price :) ... Still around the 12th best card out there! Crazy for such a low price^^ Can easily get 30-60 fps with everything on depending on other specs as well of course :D
Edit : All settings max which include Depth of field on and 1080p res minimum... not counting ambient, even if you can run well with it on any build it's not worth the ludicrous hit it has on your pc xD Otherwise, everything maxed^^ I run this game with a crappy 1055t processor also and get a easy 60 fps btw >.< Don't listen to people who say you need a i7 for this game o.<
I try to play FFXI and it gives me the same exact error >.>; I'm thinking it has something to do with the drives but idk. Either that or my power supply and either way I think I'm screwed xD I've tried google and the various "fixes" do nothing so I'm a little pessimistic at this point...
It could be broken card, though that seems unlikely. I'd guess you'd get different symptoms if your PSU was actually running out of juice when the card kicks into high gear.
So...faulty card? It's a pretty common error with NVIDIA cards it seems. Persistent problem since 2007 and still no solution except to return. Glad I went through Newegg, they seem rather good with their return policies xP Still kinda disappointing though! Anything else anyone wanna offer trying before I pack this back up...?
It's a non de script error is the problem, a bad card is a possibility, bad drivers, error within windows.
Is your PSU ok? Dose it have enough power (including the 12v rails) to run the card.,
How old is your windows install? Is it well maintained?
I've had this sort of an issue with cards before.
You could try stripping the drivers, using a different PCI-e slot, Full windows install.
I've never had this error on a bad card, its always been hi temps or bad drivers/install.
Try loading the 275 drivers. I had issues with the 280's and had to roll back as far as 260's to get things to work when i was haivng issues.
Just get gtx 560 from zotac, msi, asus, gigabyte~ but if u got enough money then just go for gtx 570 or 580 .
i can run this game with x2 gtx 470 SLI in highest settings :) but i recommend x2 of gtx 560 now for highest settings .
i7 is only good when u want to run many other programs @ windows beside runing FFXIV :> .. i5 is enough .
The 560 performs less for more money, not to mention the tri version is 80 dollars more then a 6850 for a hair better performance... the 570 or 580 while top cards, are NOT worth the money. Not to mention FF doesn't even need anything that high lol PC players are rarely wise with their cash though... you can build a full pc that can run this game with full settings at 60 fps for around $600 (USD) easy! Have no idea why everyone is spending hundreds on a video card alone, never worth it! (And yes these builds can run all the top games smoothly (inc witcher 2 and crysis 2), high end pc gaming is alot cheaper nowadays if your half decent at math,... if you need help check out passmarks or other such tools!)
I upgraded from an HD5670 to an HD6850 and it is amazing~ My fpd was fine before although it would get just a big laggy in weather with high settings. Now everything is smooth as butter. Can even turn depth of field on if I want to, but I'm kinda torn if I want to keep it on or off.
