Dark Knight is a tank, wtf

I completely agree the game could use another tank. But why take the class that is the opposite of a Paladin. A class that focuses on utter destruction with dark soul rending magic to be the guy who takes hits and protects party members.. It doesn't much make sense to me. I think if you wanted a tank that bad you should have make it so Dark Knight can be either a tank or DPS.

This is the second time I think I've asked if I've time traveled to October.

Interesting Fact: We don't know what Dark Knight will be like in FFXIV. You state that it focuses on "Destruction with dark soul rending magic"; but actually this might not be the current interpretation we get of the class.

I imagine Dark Knight is going to be something based on one of two things:
- Loss, and a desire to protect it, by any means necessary (Dark Magic)
- Potentially, fallen knights of some kind. Those who were once of Ishgardian Royal Guard taking a dark, potentially dragon-kin like magic to augment themselves to fight the Dravian hoard.

I think people are focusing too much on 'destruction' side of DRK. It could take another new path in the game completely.

I'm not all that upset that Dark is a tank class. I can see them doing some really neat things with it if they don't play it by the numbers....but you know.

It's not even out yet. Just because it's announced to be a tank, doesn't mean down the line they won't make it be both.

Besides, it's not that out of this mind to have a class that thrives on sacrificing its own HP also be a tank. Just means it'll need a ton of HP.

Wow let's jump to conclusions before we know anything about how the class actually works. That sounds like a good exercise in futility and wasting time.

There are plenty of tank-like aspects that Dark Knight has though, it's silly to say that it can't be one.

The Soul of the Paladin is a means to protect what you care about and keep it safe while minimizing destruction. The Soul of the Dark Knight is to protect and destroy in order to come out on top by any means necessary. In other words, I'm sure the Dark Knight story will be good, hopefully.

Hopefully that means Dark Knights fight dirty :D

You would imagine that DRK would be wearing super heavy armour like a PLD or WAR as well. WARs can tank with a massive axe so why can DRK not tank with a massive sword? I personally will be making DRK my secondary class :D, I can't wait to play it!

It would then be pointed out that the gun mage in FFX-2 was capable of healing through the blue bullets (like blue mage, but for guns).
And that the chemist in FFT used guns, and was capable of healing others far away by throwing pots.
And that Cid in FFTA (Agent job, which was a type of Gunner) was capable of healing.

I know there are a few examples of gun healers. I don't care what role the gun job is anyway. I wanted paladin to be a dps role but, it wasn't and play the game anyway. So no new job/role combination will really disappoint me. Especially since I can play any role between any of my three characters. I'm just saying that I know there will be a lot of people who will be pretty mad if gun job isn't a dps role.

People will complain no matter what SE does, tis in their nature to complain. If there isn't anything to complain about, they make something up based on almost no knowledge. AKA whining DRK is going to be tank with no idea how it will be handled.

It's difficult to speculate much of anything at this point. To be clear, it was specifically stated that Dark Knight will be a job only and will have no base class whatsoever. That already indicates/implies change, so don't condemn the idea before you even know what it actually is.

Well maybe they will be like WAR. War can push out decent DPS if they turn off Defiant. Maybe Dark Knight have something similar like that too.

They have to for even the spirit of Dark Knight to make sense as a tank.
One of their biggest abilities is using their HP to bolster their attack...to do so as a Tank? I really don't know how that's gonna happen without a HUGE revamp in the present tank HP and DEF values.

I'll justify Dark Knight Tanks the same way I justify Warrior Tanks.

They are not the complete opposite of a "Paladin." In the case they truly were the complete opposite, they would also wear cloth armor. This is not the case. Any "Knight" class are expected to be defenders of their allies, whether its by holy conviction or sinister in origin. Yes, even evil need tanks.

Yeah DRK was a dps for the most part in XI, but thats simply the way most players played DRK. This is an opportunity for a game changer, to make more players interested in playing a Tank class.

pretty much this. just cause it was a dps in one game doesn't mean that is the only role it will ever fulfill. and actually it wasn't a huge undertaking to tank on drk in some of the lower to mid lvls on ffxi, with the right gear and /war it wasn't really that hard to tank on drk, just not conventional.

Final Fantasy 6, Cecil was a Tank. He was a Dark Knight that turn into a Paladin later in the game. So it still make sense Dark Knight is a Tank. Sure they are DPS in FFXI, but they were met to be Tank class until the community turn Ninja into a Tank class, so they don't want to released another Tank class and make Dark Knight a DPS.

I'm pretty sure the DRK storyline will be along the lines of you sacrificing something for power. Heh, maybe a sword of darkness that marks your soul and ties it to the void or something.

I like the idea of it being a Tank, at least for a little while, there shouldn't be a shortage of tanks ;)

Err... you mean FFV. Also Cecil wasn't exactly a 'tank', as he still had darkness attacks which sacrificed HP to deal extra damage.
Somehow sacrificing HP doesn't exactly scream 'tank for me'.

Of course, they could just remove that unique trait... but then it would be Dark Knight in name only. In EVERY iteration of Dark Knight, they've sacrificed HP to deal bonus damage. So... how exactly are they not a DPS?

By that logic, Kain was also a tank (actually properly geared even more tanky than Cecil itself) so Dragoons should also be tanks.

Now, through the versions of all FF, DRK have been resistant HP absorb DPS classes, with a defence mainly from using heavy armor but not much more than that, on the other hand, they usually carry black magic, defense ignoring attacks, HP sacrifice high damage attacks, HP drains, several debuffs (basically defense and resistance reductions) all things you expect to see in a DPS/Debuffer class. Armor doesn`t determine the role of a class. So "historically" DRK have been always closer to what DPS is than a tank.

BUT, each FFXIV is unique and devs can make anything of anything if they want.

Now, if the DRK is going to be a hell knight clone of L2, ok, but i swear, nothing screams DPS more than a knight sword (what greatswords of dark and holy knights are called) def-bypassing damage skills like Darkness or HP sacrifice skills that augments strenght or straight make tons of damage... But hey, make him a tank, he is only missing a black coeurl.
