Hey guys. I've got a query regarding the expansion that maybe you'll be able to help me with. I know information regarding the expansion is very sparse, but I know there are veteran MMO players amongst you who may know how it works for other games. Here goes.
The problem is that me and my partner both play this game. We play on both a PC and PS4 - alternating who gets to play on what platform on any given night. Now, with the base game you need to have a separate licence key for each platform. So I had to buy a PC copy of the game as well as a PS4 copy, and so did my partner. So between us we have bought 4 copies of the game - it was quite expensive!
I'm wondering, will the expansion work in the same way? Because obviously we don't want to have to buy 4 copies of that as well. Surely it's possible to just link a purchased copy of the expansion to your Square Enix account, and they have the expansion work across all licence keys on the same account?
I know since the cash shop has come out there has been a lot of criticism aimed at SE for money grabbing. So I'm hoping that this might be a chance for them to show that they do (somewhat) care for the consumer by doing the right thing.

the way i beleave it is going to work is once you buy the expansion and have it registered to your account, it will automatically allow you into the areas associated with the expansion keeping the loader and the game to focus on everything, of corse this means a slightly longer patch times for everyone, but it is the simplest way,
plus this saves SE from placing it inside the PSN store, meaning they can sell it to PS4 players Ps3 players and PC players easily. and all for the same price.
however, they may plan to say you need a specific copy platform copy of the expansion which is usually downlooked on but it grants them more profits, its all down to what they want, ease of accessibility or the profits. -

If the expansion has it's own license I assume you buy it for each platform. Sounds greedy I know but each game gives you a license to play on your chosen platform. But I hope I'm wrong and it works like owning a collectors edition. You already brought the extra bonuses there is no sense in having to buy it twice.

What would happen if i buy it only for PC, go to the new zone on PC, log off and switch to PS4 which don't have the expansion and log in into the new zone?

i believe for FFXI you just had to have the base game license, and if your account had the expansion license for any version you could use it on the alternate platforms. But i may well be wrong, so if anyone does know, then throw in your hat here for us.

What I'd like to know myself is I proba will buy a CE version but I usually want a physcial version which tends to take a week or two to get to me. So question is can I buy a digital download normal one and then apply the CE code on top of that?

I'd expect it to work the same way as CE or any other "bonus" items - to by applied to the SE service account and usable / accessible on all registered platforms.

It could go either way. With XI the expansions were unlocked on the account, regardless of the platform. You just needed to have the expansion installed and have it activated on your account. In your situation that would mean you each buy one copy (ideally 1 PC and 1 PS4). However, with XI the base game worked that way as well and we know that's not the case here, so at this point I think it's anyone's guess.

If it goes where you must buy it 2 times to play on ps4 and pc back and forth I may have to just pass. I cannot afford to buy it twice. 4 Of us in same house play ffxiv and many times because of various pc issues one of us bounces to ps4 and plays. TBH though I do not see them going the ffxi route. If so they would have already done it when the ps4 version and ps3 versions came out. I fully expect them to make us buy the expansion twice. I mean tbh I know I will buy it at least once for ps4 and pc because I need the software. That's 2 licenses. I of course will buy the other 2 for the rest of my players in house. That make 4. But to buy it 8 times just so we can bounce between ps4 / pc is not gonna happen. I will be forced to give up ps4 as my platform if this happens. I'm sure I am not alone in this.

considering they were or are giving out free PS4 license keys to those with PS3s, I would imagine making you buy the game for each platform would be fiscal suicide.
More than likely it will work like the CE goodies and mog station stuff, especially since, unlike a game unlock key, there's no change to where the data is coming or going from since it's still the exact same game. Even if you DON'T have the expansion, traditionally you still end up downloading the damn thing in order to prevent rampant crash bugs and to ease version transitions. -

Buying 4 licenses really has nothing to do with the cash shop as it the same way SE ran XI if you played on PC/PS2/360 you had to have a license for each platform so I would assume they would continue that type of setup considering that how it is for the base of XIV.

I had xi on pc and 360 and only ever needed 1 licence to play both platforms... yes i bought the game twice but only ever used 1 licence. I know that coz i gave my 360 codes away....

How many people actually play more then one platform? Being how the internet works now days what would keep people from just buying the PS3/4 Version for the key and then just downloading the PC version off the net?
Oh anyways getting off topic from OP post the keys are linked to your account not your system so two people can't use the same key regardless if data is installed. -
