QARN HM Final Boss - Red Beam Mechanic

Hey guys,

Absolutely love the Qarn HM dungeon, and I've ran it a total of three times now. However, after my third encounter, I came across a mechanic I hadn't seen before in the other runs. The boss will suddenly conjure up a red laser on a random player, and follow them around the room. Eventually, that red laser will give you 4 stacks of the Mummy debuff, and immediately turn you into a mummy. I've tried looking around on the net but can't seem to find a solution. Any ideas on how to take on this mechanic?! :)

EDIT: Apparently it's not based on whether someone was mummified earlier in the fight, as was my initial observation.

Orig: I've seen this. It happened on a run where nobody got mummified from the sarcophagi, but it did not happen in a fight where I had earlier been mummified. This makes me think it's an attack that's only used if nobody has been mummified yet, as a way to ensure the party has to deal with it at least once.

I couldn't see any way to avoid or break it--from my view as the tank, he aggroed to the healer and repeatedly applied stacks until the healer was mummified. It happen very quickly, and there was no obvious way to intervene, so I don't think you can.

This is incorrect. It's just something that may be able to happen later in the fight regardless if someone has become a mummy yet or not.

It also does not take you fully to 4 stacks, on our first run it targeted me and brought me to 2 before stopping. I'm assuming damage or some other mechanic stops it. Damage makes the most sense if people claim not seeing it since maybe they are stopping it before it's noticeable.

I had it happen to me (as the tank) three times. I was the only person to turn into a mummy. Definitely can't outrun or stun it, so I'll try standing still to see if DPS helps.

maybe it is just another means to get you to turn into a mummy... lets say you narrowly escaped the wall but with 2 stacks, now your fine until you get hit with the laser which is gonna finish the job.

was thinking maybe there is a way to swap it to someone else "hot potato" style?

It's fast, it's zero to 4 in less than 10 seconds.

Yeah, I've had this mechanic push me from zero stacks to four. I have no idea what to do about it.

He kept doing this to me if the tank got mummified. It might be random or they might purposely go for the healer like Fenrir in the new dungeon if everyone gets frozen.

Had this happen to my group on my first run as SCH. ONLY the tank was targeted each time, and it caused 3 wipes since he goes crazy on each DPS and drops them before the tank comes unmummified (is that even a word?). I never saw it target anyone else and the tank went from 0 to 4 stacks instantly.

I think it targets whoever is closest to him which would normally be the tank. He was in his crazy phase so people were dodging around the room and he managed to corner me last time i did it and hit lazer on me. After turned into a mummy ran around then ran into a coffin and got healed in full.....Yeah i don't get it either. I'd love to see what they were smoking when they thought it up. The lazer is like a lasso that latches on to the person so maybe if you damage it enough in time it stops but people tend to have been running around during that last phase because he starts chasing the DPS or the Healer. Doesn't seem much reason for it seen it if people turn into mummies or not.

Stun it. Stun the sword beam too.

And dodge, dodge, dodge.

It's a pretty simple mechanic that happens towards the end of the fight. He targets one specific player as the guy he wants to get mummified, and that player better be ready to dodge. The aoe line is invisible, however it can be dodged via LOS method. Even then, if a tank or healer becomes mummified, you should still be able to beat him. Come on guys, it's a challenge worth keeping in the game. Hardly a broken mechanic at all. If you wanna talk about broken mechanics, go back to them old days of dealing with the demon wall.

Lol the Bees were the only challenge in the whole fight and now it's boring and easy. I wouldn't call the Qarn HM mechanic broken either it's just an oddball thing that i've not been able to figure out why it happens and if there is a way to avoid it.

Ran Qarn for the third time with my friend, and for the first time we came across this mechanic. It targeted her, BLM, and we were both surprised and unsure what to do about it.
I'm mostly just curious what triggers or prevents it, as I wasn't aware of its existence up until the third run at all.

She likes being a mummy though, finds it hilarious, so it's all good.

this 1st time i ran that the other day and after demon wall fight im like wth happened to the bees??? its way to easy without them u could more or less do with ur eyes closed lol

After running it a bit more, I think I figured out what may be happening.

When someone becomes a mummy, the boss's AI changes temporarily and he will walk around to attack people randomly (I'm assuming this is so it's not a guaranteed wipe if the tank or healer get mummified). I think the one time he stopped doing the red beam on me someone might have become a mummy which interrupted his current actions so he would go off to attack people randomly. It also might be why some people never see it, it might be some mechanic that happens after no one has been mummified for an extended period of time, and if people are getting mummified on occasion (my FC is pretty lazy with dodging mummies since it's pretty funny) you don't see the red beam happen at all since his script keeps getting interrupted.

Wonder what he does if everyone becomes a mummy. Does he just go do a puzzle and have some tea?

Yep, that is exactly what happens. I have seen it and what occurs is those coffins rise up again, three coffins in total of which two have mummies inside and the third a table (teapot and mug as well as a newspaper on table) plus a chair. The two mummies pick up the table when coffins open and chair then bring it to boss who then sits down, drinks his tea and reads the newspaper. :)

No one has even been talking about the straight-beam laser. They mean the red tether that the boss attaches to someone.

Hmmm stun stun and more stun. Seems to be effective.

Those bees were so far from a broken mechanic >.< I'd consider a fight I've solo'd as a tank broken before a fight that has a little challenge to it. Such as this new demon wall, or a last boss in SV HM. Those bees weren't that ridiculous to deal with when he had i70 gear, now with poe and everything else, you think those bees would even be a tiny problem? Yet people whined and whined their way into the fight being totally nerfed and pathetic.

there will be a sound and visual cue right before red tether happens.
stun the boss once u see it.

I'm not sure if it's coincidence or not, but when I'm targeted with the red tether I find that stunning the boss and then running away seems to break the tether after a set distance. I've gotten away with a single stack before.

I usually run this place as healer, always get the tether when he is somewhere near 10%. I usually just sprint around the room with the boss chasing me tethered for about a minute while everyone else just finishes him off. I usually get mummified when he has like 2% or less left, and everyone else can finish him off without my help. As scholar I place EOS in the middle of the room at the beginning of the fight so healing will still happen when I am mummified.

Bees:

Tempered Will -> Flash -> Flash -> Burn Wall (Hallowed Ground during AOEs)

Holmgang -> Flash -> OP -> Burn Wall (2.0 WAR so was a pain but basically the same)

If your group didn't want to burn, melee LB one of the adds or caster LB both then burn the bees. Wasn't really any more challenging, but was more involved.

Qarn:

Stun boss, break tether. Can also stun him before the cast and he won't cast it at all I think, haven't ran Qarn enough to know. If no one else has stacks it's not actually a big deal to get zombie'd by the laser unless you're the healer, in which case Sprint hard.

Both of these points have been mentioned but they really should be put together:
Stun the boss then move away to break the tether.

I save lethargy as blm for this move, he is one of the few bosses that heavy actually sticks to.

Holmgang also works to keep him in place for a little bit, I think. (Obviously not recommended if tether is on the War)

A few things I've noticed about the red laser: If you stun him when the indicator appears but before he uses the move, he waits until after the stun to use the move. Whenever I've done that by accident, it resulted in the person being mummied with no real way of stopping it because re-stunning him doesn't last as long. Also, if you stun him but the person doesn't move away, they still get mummied. The minute the other person gets the indicator on them, they have to start running. The minute the actual laser appears, the tank needs to stun, and then the player can get away.

Honestly though, this mechanic is really not a big deal. I've missed or ignored the red laser several times and still cleared the fight without a problem. It's not like the mummying is an instakill or anything.

As other have stated: stun.

Additionally: if you're a blm just AM to someone far away. No stun required, and you don't even lose casting uptime

From the times he has done it, I've noticed stun does not seem to do it by itself. It seems to be an invisible tethering thing, because the one time I got it on me and no stuns had been used on the boss prior, I stunned him and ran, and suddenly the move stopped when I was halfway across the field away from him. I'd need to test it again, but if I'm correct then he just has to be far enough away from the person for it to break.

Stun does do it by itself. I've stunned it as tank and stopped it, when the tether was on me, the tank. Certainly, I did not move. Surprised how long this thread went before someone mentioned stun to begin with.

Considering I tried a stun earlier (first stun of the fight) in Qarn when it was on the BLM, the BLM did not move, yet the attack did not stop even after the full stun duration, I don't think just stunning does it.

You stun the red beam. But people stun so much in the rotation that when this beam appears you are going to get mummified.

You can also run away and break the beam but you need to be kinda quick about it. Easier if you are a class that can use sprint. If you don't break it almost right away then he just follow you around the room. But yeah it's probably best to save stuns for that point but people try to stun the crossed swords attack he does which is easy to get out the way of.

Stun the boss, player targetted by red bean runs away. Stunning boss doesnt break the beam, the player moving away breaks the beam. You stun so the payer targetted can move away from the boss without the boss following.

Also remind, if your random tank doesn't stun and you're a whitemage do swiftcast-holy ;)
