Summoner checking in.
how exactly does a class feel "outdated"? They aren't cartons of milk or newspapers...
Especially since summoners are still valuable for their utility (being the only non-healer class that can rez in combat) and consistent DPS, as well as their ability to kite in situations like t7.
My girlfriend mains summoner on 2 different servers, but I prefer scholar myself.
I haven't played it for a while because I've been needing to play other classes but Summoner is still one of my favorite DPS class c:
Are you trying to summon Akiza here? ;A;
FC mate of mine (a SMN) went into ST the other day and discovered 10/12 dps were SMN. So I guess ymmv? I see SMN in the DF regularly.
Is this supposed to be a joke thread? "Does anyone actually play class/job X that I don't like"? What kind of responses do you THINK you're going to get?
WHM and SMN are my mains. What do you mean the job is "outdated"?
Except you used the word "outdated," when from this it looks like you meant "boring" or "doesn't fit my playstyle." Some people get along great with a job that's consistent...even though SMN is NOT a job like that. SMN has a wealth of abilities they should be employing. If SMN is boring to you, you're probably not using all the tools you're given. In a straight up DPS fight, yeah it doesn't change. But when faced with mechanics that require movement, SMN is incredibly valuable as the ONLY caster DPS that can maintain their DPS while moving, whereas BLM suffers when forced to move. Plus they're great at kiting.
SMN here. Plan on staying SMN. :)
The SMN job feels like an early iteration of what other MMOs do with DoT classes, whereas those DoT classes in other games are much more fleshed out and interesting. The same can be said for a lot of jobs in this game though. FFXIV combat is pretty simple in the grand scheme of MMOs but you have to consider that this fact is what draws some people in. Also, while FFXIV combat may feel simple to those who play non-FF MMOs, the combat in this game requires a lot more attention than it ever did in FFXI.
I like SMN simply because it is SMN, but it's playstyle does feel old to me and that's why I don't play it as much. Here's to hoping 3.0 makes it a little more interesting!
Not a fan of DPS classes in general, but when I do DPS, I DPS Summoner. :p
I sure hope I still play a summoner, since I don't think I can change my username!
:p
Kidding aside, I still main summoner. I'm currently working on my Novus, and saving up poetics to start upgrading.
I will say, though, that in my FC I'm the only one who mains summoner. Scholar is the more popular arcanist job.
I'm using all skills (I know some are situational), I'm really good at summoner. I think what I meant is how boring it is compared to other jobs. Maybe the issue is that there are too many repeat skills like bio bio II miasma. How many poison skills do we need? I wish the class skills had a more engaging skill system.
Well, the rotation for Smn is pretty basic - there's not a lot of room for variability other than to weave in Miasma 2 and Shadow flare at specific points. But Smn should not seem repetitive if you are using the job to its full abilities - meaning exercising its support capability. Its a pretty busy job
I think this is a case of perspective. All classes have a rotation they do most (~80%) of the time. Sounds like you're just not very interested in the DoT playstyle. Edit: which is fine by the way. I don't particularly enjoy an archer's playstyle. It's why we have so many different classes.
The only reason I'm amazed anyone plays SMN ever is SCH gets parties inside a min 90% of the time.
My main. Just got my novus.
Nexus summoner checking in!
This makes no sense though... You find SMN boring due to repetition yet BLM, MNK, DRG and BRD all have a set of skills they repeat in a set order as part of their rotation with small variations based on procs and cooldowns. Of all the DPS jobs SMN is actually the least repetitive due to it having no fixed rotation; you reapply your dots as they're about to expire and since they all have different timers the reapplications do not fall into a fixed rotation. The reason I enjoy SMN more than the other DPS jobs is specifically because they are much less focused on a rotation and more on skill priorities.
I'm leveling my thaumaturge now then Black Mage, then I will level up arcanist then Summoner. I plan to make them both my main.
Summoner/Arcanist is the reason I started and still play. Heck, if I didn't have to grind 30 levels on a class I don't want to play just to have the opportunity to unlock the class, I would probably still be playing XI. I think I managed to tolerate the grind until a level or two after unlocking a secondary class before I had enough.
Went in ST yesterday, we had a Tank, 2 Healers, MNK, BLM (me) and 3 SMN, I think the class is just fine lol :)
BLM is pretty repetitive... Thunder III > Fire III > Fire fire fire fire fire fire... opps getting low from here you can do like 1 of 3 things, flare transpose, just transpose or swift cast blizzard for the most part depending on situation then back to Thunder III > Fire III > Fire fire fire fire fire fire... opps getting low... lol
Its very repetitive.
High Allagan Summoner Checking in /hipster
I can say besides whm (which I main now because my raid's group setup changed for 2.4-I miss SMN already ;;), SMN is the only DPS class that I can thoroughly enjoy for hours on end. They actually have the least 'set' rotation out of all the dps classes, especially compared to BRD/BLM, refreshing dots at certain times of expiration and acting as support in tight situations to swiftcast rez.
Also bane/fester crits in pvp destroy ;)
I guess if you don't like SMN don't play it, but really do you have to make a thread about how you don't like it? Seems really unnecessary. You also better run before all the other SMNs flock in and drill their horns into you ;)
When did the summoners leave? I think they sure lost the memo.
I play summoner mostly in pvp but sometimes dungeons (silly nexus so im doing them all as healer now)
I think its my favourite class
I'm in the same boat as the poster at the top of this page - SMN is the job I love more than anything, but due to raiding reasons I'm stuck as WHM. I gear my SMN as well as I can (it was 110 BiS minus the HA weapon for months pre-2.4), but not being able to play it in a progression setting kills me.
It's very versatile and fun. People just don't notice because the DoTs and their ticks don't have needlessly flashy animations attached to them.
I have SMN as main (through primary ACN skill)
I saw the title and thought this was an Akiza thread. But still wasn't disappointed. I'll just stick to dotting everything up and doing sweet damage.
Newbie sumn here checking in :D . Putting aside shiny new patch content being shiny and new and of course everyone wants to focus on that right now instead of older stuff like summoner, I am not tired of it at all.
I don't see how it can be dull. If willing, you can put your pets on obey and use their abilities. Additionally being able to raise others, especially healers is very usefull. Titan is a decent tank if your party lacks one.
Summoner here! I have been since I started playing (five months ago?) and I have been loving it. It combines two of my favorite aspects of past MMO experiences, pets and DoTs, and I love the lore around it. I much prefer it to WHM (Which is Level 50) and SCH. Compared to BLM (Which is level 26... I only played to get Swiftcast, and I have no intention of taking it any further! It was just... boring, in my opinion.) it is heavenly to play. I will admit, I have just started playing Lancer and that is really fun too. Will it be my new main? Why knows. Either way, SMN will always have a soft spot in my heart.
