It depends on what people mean by useless. If you mean in relation to gearing up, then yeah it's pretty lackluster. High level equipment is tedious to make and it still pales in comparison to raid and tomestone gear. However, there are plenty of other items like consumables that are useful. Crafting is also indirectly one of the only sources of materia too (since you can only convert crafted gear).
I'd say it's more useful than those 2 games. People always need food and stat potions (well, good players do).
Also, the last tier of crafted gear was generally better than i100 with good melds, despite only being i90. Doesn't really matter so much now since sands and oils rain from the sky but from 2.2 to 2.3 they were really good if you had the money to spend.
Crafting is probably the best way to both make and lose money in this game. The desynth materia goes for hundreds of thousands of gil and Crafters are needed in order to make vanity and housing items. In addition, in order to meld materia into a piece of gear you need to have the required level with the gears associated crafting origin. In a sense, without crafting you cannot effectively farm for expensive Grade IV materia or put up items for sale that go beyond base materials. Not to mention that the crafting mini-game takes a bit of skill to master and be quite entertaining if you're actively trying to make HQ products.
So if you simply want to do dungeons and not mess around with Vanity for your character, make millions of gold, create unique housing items, or invest into what SE may inevitably bring out for crafters in terms of end-game gear, then it's probably not for you.
Vanity, food, main stat potions and poison pots, more vanity, gear for lower level classes if you didn't save old gear, repairs anywhere, even more vanity, some money making if you get lucky with RNG or that particular market isn't crashed already, that's about it.
It's useful if you want gil.
the ability to perform field repairs is an often overlooked but very powerful ability. It's cheaper than repairing as well. Kind of an investment, though, since you need to be lvl 40+ with everything except culinarian to be able to repair every type of gear.
That plus vanity gear, housing, potions, materia, and food.
I guess it's useless if you consider being filthy stinking rich (in-game) is useless.
All the things people mention above. The question is "useless for what?". I really enjoy crafting. I probably do more of it than anything else in the game. It is an aspect of the game in its own right with its own progression challenges and stands on its own feet, as well as being very supportive of other aspects of the game. Perhaps people who like only crafting (and I know a couple) think that dungeons are "useless" or hunts are "useless" except for the loot they drop for crafters. Just thinking aloud.
I heard gil is useless too @@:
(smart) crafters are rich
I90 crafted- The window in which they were worth more then vanity was actually quite small due to hunts like you said. I70 held its own for a long time but the gap between I90, coil 2, and cheesemode Sol gear unweathered was quite huge. I suppose someone could argue the accessories are still good but considering the headache of melding them vs. mindlessly doing hunts most people just go for the unweathered counterpart, like instead of STR on VIT rings people just grab the Sol stuff.
For example, in World of Warcraft, all professions can contribute to BiS stats at end-game. Most of the time it's not through actual pieces themselves, but for example Tailoring (ClothCrafting) can form threads that when applied to your leg slot augment them and increase their stats.
Keep in mind that this is an MMO where everyone can literally do everything. I shudder to think what would happen if each crafting class gave it's own sort of boost to your gear and basically required everyone who wanted to do Coil to level up their crafting classes to the max and then proceed to gear them just so that they can have the best possible chance to complete a turn. It would be a new age where the common PF requirement would be "Full 5-meld gear with all craft boosts"
There's a reason why you can't meld materia into gear you get from dungeons.
It all depends on what you consider valuable.
If you're only interested in BiS PvE progression and gearing, then bothering with anything to do with crafting is almost pointless outside of stat potions and food buffs.
The moment you start wanting to do anything else - anything to do with vanity, maximizing PvP gear, etc - crafting starts becoming important.
I will havet o ask the same question most some other ppl asked.
What do you mean by useless?
I kinda think fighting gear is useless because they keep putting in new gear all the time so after 3 months we get better gear for free
But I don't find the vanity items we can craft useless cause they will stay the same for eeeveeeer
Then there is food and potions they are always nice
I think that is cause SE makes the dungeons/ST/CT too easy
But when I have done ex trials most people do use food buffs. Now its not neccessary though cause of echo.
This.
I think to a degree the highest tiers of crafting, like the Primal Weapons, are a bit like Savage Coil. There's no particular reason you'd want to be able to make them other than you want to be able to say you can make them ... but some of us do want just that because this is our chosen progression path.
Useless in making the game feel complete. The way it is and the way you're describing it, crafting looks like another game accidentally stuck to FFXIV.Quote:
useless for what?
That being said, it's not the fault of crafting-aspect. It will be able to shine only if the battle-aspect of the game opens itself.
The highest ilvl crafted battle gear is twenty or more levels lower than the highest ilvl available gear, and that is likely never to change. This was a deliberate move on SE's part both to combat RMT and to ensure that players couldn't buy their way into endgame-level gear with gil. So, if you believe the only worth in the game comes from obtaininig high level gear, then yes, crafting is useless.
Crafting, though, is the primary source for Glamour items, HQ consumables, Housing furnishings, and convertable equipment. You don't NEED to have a house, but if you have one, you're probably not going to want to leave it completely barren. Crafting can help you there. You don't NEED to glamour your gear, but if you love the stats but hate the look of the gear you wear, Glamour can be a godsend. Crafting can help you there. You don't NEED food or potions, but you won't be taken seriously for a lot of endgame activites unless you have it. Crafting can help you there. You don't NEED a relic weapon, there are plenty of alternatives available, but if you do make one you're going to need a lot of Materia for your Novus weapon. Crafting can help you there.
And, of course, if you're a Crafter or Gatherer, nearly all of your gear is crafted and will require a lot of Materia. Crafting can help you there.
It's like people forget that every coil patch all the gillionaires start pentamelding new crafted gear as an early upgrade to their same-but-inferior ilvl gear.
Even then it's just out of reach for most players. If you want crafted gear to be more prevalent then first crafters have to be willing to take a huge hit to the gear value and prices, and let's not even start on materia prices and the PITA that is spiritbonding (especially without holy).
I've leveled most my crafts to repair my gear at one point I'd thought it would be useful thing for putting materia in end game gear but that sorely a disappointment with current materia system. Materia/Craft gear will be only be playing catch up mode indefinitely after each patch all because of SE over fear of RMT's sadly. The most I use gil for is teleports know beyond that gil isn't even worth the effort to achieve millions know it for people just for show at this point in the game it has very little meaning to it besides getting a large house and decorate it maybe woooh /softclap.
You certainly never played FFXI, especially prior to the 99 cap.
He never played XI as far as I can tell, as back in 75 cap, some standard gear was crafted, e.g sniper rings, haubergeon, scorpion harness, certain weapons (like Blue Mage's non R/E alternative swords), leveling up crafted gear was extremely valuable and so on.
Crafting in XIV is useless in terms of progression as dungeon drops 15-45 drop HQ+Additional stat versions.
Over melded i90 crafted gear can still be bis, and if they do the upgrade system it is better to get the hq crafted sets and and max meld them, endgame raiders who are the first to beat the new turns ussualy go in, in hq crafted and over melded gear. Crafting is far from useless, you just need to learn that ilvl does not always win
food are far less effective than in ffxi
VSCode:Vitality 4% Max 19

Determination 4% Max 17
except the main stat have more weight that the secondary, a food weight is less than 1% on your total gear weight, it's really not that far from uselessCode:Food Effects: (30 minutes, All Races)
HP +25

Agility +1
Intelligence -2
Attack +24.7% (Cap: 150@652 Base Attack)
Ranged Attack +24.7% (Cap: 150@652 Base Ranged Attack)

The accesories would like to have a conversation with you, and we are talking about new patch release. Not 6 months later.
Crafting is incredibly useful for making your own food and pots. The MB greatly overprices everything. You're getting ripped off as long as you buy from it.
Right. For progression in 2.4 the crafts gear with melds will be used for a few months. Looking forward to Koenig!
At this point in 2.2-2.3s life nothing is BiS. Some people use the accessories but they are not BiS. (I could see some savage groups using them but that's progression)
If it's fun it's not useless. I find it fun.
