Since we are getting the Golden Saucer anyway sometimes in the future...

...I wonder if it would be possible to get a Gambler class, like Setzer from FFVI.

I know, playing cards don't make good relic weapons, but...

1. We have only one physical damage dealing ranged class.

2. It is incredibly stylish.

3. The possibilities are endless regarding the effects of the cards.

For example let's saaaay Hearts heal, Diamonds inflict ice damage and Clubs inflict physical damage. If we only look at the numbered cards it's already 10 ranks.

Or you draw maybe 3 cards and get a random effect based on their combination. Or add up their value for damage (like 3 of hears 4 of diamonds and 7 of spades giving you 347).

Of course I am contradicting myself as this would pretty much be another spellcaster in all but name, or perhaps a hybrid.

After draining my brain at the University this is all I can come up now, but if the general public(and the devs) are interested I'll come up with a whole range of abilities.

Come to think of it, Type-0 also has a gambler. The timing would be perfect.

Don't rule out the possibility of a Gunslinger class yet. Admiral Merylwb and a few NPC's in the under-croft of the Marauders guild use flintlock guns (I think they are flintlock?) so the likelihood of use getting a gunslinger class is high if the dev's have already started something or have scheduled to start working on something.

I know. Gunslinger is pretty much confirmed by now. I was talking about the present situation. To be fair, I just want to justify the class concept as, appart from a gunblade wielder, this would be the class I would be interested in the most, now that we are getting the ninja

It's possible we'll get a gambler type someday, but not with the Golden Saucer. That's a 2.X release and NIN is the last one we're getting until 3.0.

Its pretty long off then till we hear about something similar to that then. Were looking at another 2+ patches before we get to 3.0 so it will be more than half a year before we start hearing about upcoming aproach of 3.0. (I think the time is right? I notice the dev's have a pattern of releasing a .x patch every 3 months so we would be waiting for six months after 2.4 comes out for 2.6 if I am correct.)

EDIT: Thats if they don't give us a surprise Christmas gift around Christmas, but the chance of it being a ranged DPS is nil.

Well the time doesn't matter really if we will get it, I just figured it would fit thematically with the Gold Saucer. And the release of Type-0.

Well I am not saying its a bad idea. I mean, it would be interesting to see a class with a Tarot Card theme that would role support like bard but deal damage via Dot's or something.

Teller->Diviner.

Teller would be base class Tarot card influenced by magic.

Diviner would be a job class that would cripple foes and somewhat (In a very limited sense) influence and warp reality through cards heavily imbued with magic.

IDK, interesting concept though.

I like the warp reality idea. What I came up for the job (which stayed gambler as that is the actual name of the class) was to mold heaps of cards into stuff like projectiles, ropes to bind the enemy and maybe even decoys, like the ones Y'shtola could conjure up in 1.0. Tubalcain Alhambra had a similar trick in Hellsing Abridged.

Neither did I but saw pictures. Yes as far as I know it doesn't matter what's there on the actual cards. Or at leas no value is given to them. Yet. Ace is using a Tarrot deck in Type-0. No idea what Setzer uses, but he can do mega flare with it so it's a pretty powerfull deck

Another thing came to my mind. If the cards are used like in Type-0, with random cards drawn, each with their unique effect, it might be an interesting idea for Gamblers to make cards the actual drops and quest rewards, NOT the whole decks. The base damage and stat bonus of the deck(main hand weapon) could be dependant on the number of cards in the deck, while the cards themselves are collected and placed in the deck by the gambler himself.

It is safe to assume that every class will need a card deck interface for triple triad. It would be a simple thing to enable Gamblers to use the very same interface to manage their fighting deck as well. Of course this would make it possible to build healing and tanking decks as well. Both of these roles happen to be in short supply.

It's an interesting concept but it seems overly complicated and complex for something that anybody should be able to pick up and play.

Gambler would probably be a DPS class, but would role as a support class, much like bard, but they would use their legendary luck to grant boons of strength and power?

You said in the thread earlier that you would elaborate on the class mechanics if asked. Would you mind putting them into a Google doc and dropping a link here? Maybe if I had an idea of how you think it might work, I could understand better.

Yeah it does sound overly complex. Then again, so does the ninja. I originally planned to do it once more than one person takes interest in it, but I might do it in the weekend.

I've thought about similar types of classes for the Gold Saucer, but not fashioned into combat classes. Instead, I see them fulfilling more noncombat roles like DoH and DoL... maybe "Disciples of the Game"? xP

You'd be able to play all kinds of games for different prizes depending on what kind of class you are. It wouldn't even need to be a lot of classes categorized as "DoG".. I would imagine Gambler, where you play card games, maybe Triple Triad (which has already been confirmed for the future) and even Tetra Master (FF9) and Sphere Break (FF10-2).

Another "DoG" class I would love, love, love to see is Blitzer or something, maybe. Where you play Blitzball. Because I would play the hell out of Blitzball if it was in this game.

I only came up with the Disciples of the Game idea for potential Blitzball playing. I don't even care if Blitzball gets its own class or not. I just want to play!

Perhaps, since it would involve swimming, it would allow for underwater combat in other areas of the game. Idk.

Actually, I don't think that's too far off a bet. Yoshi-P hinted at the next character with a 007 shirt and a gun motion. What is more iconic of 007 than its first novel and movie, Casino Royale? I'm also betting it's paired with Rogue as a cross-class, which makes it a ranged gun-wielding dps.

Sadly though, the cards have gone the same way as the scythe.

I don't want the cards to go. That is the whole point. Fighting with cards is awesome. (and stylish). But what do I know. I'm just a stupid octopus.

Setzer used Cards, Dice and Darts (all gambling icons). Any of these that he throws deal damage, they are just themed to his character. His special ability was roulette slots (again gambling), which had nothing to do with his deck of cards. His power isn't necessarily from his weapon.... they appear to be more of a conduit for his own power (like Gambit).

I don't think there is ever an explanation as to why he has a special ability like some of the other characters, but we are talking about the SNES generation when there didn't need to be an in-depth scientific reason why he could kill monsters with playing cards.

They should add an ice skating rink/ice hockey perhaps in gold saucer. Skidding around on Shiva's frozen floor mechanic is quite fun.
