Please answer you opinion in a kind and calm manner. I only ask this question out of interest to see what others opinions are in regards to this expansion.
Do you think that the population of FF14 will decrease not just for a short time but for a extended period of time after WoD release?
Do you feel that FF14 is up to the challenge of facing down WoW in regards to numbers with the whole new restructure of on how WoW with updated its graphics which is almost comparable to FF14?
Do you feel that the player base based on your server has increased or decreased not based on content but based on the direction SE has made with the game in the past year?
Please voice your opinions in a respectful manner. I do not ask this question to start arguments or to offend anyone....I would just like to ask honest opinions on the above questions.....

Yes it will hurt FFXIV and here is why.
Who ever quit or deleted character can revive them, the content will be game breaking hard which will last them a bit to finish the content and the new updates for that content, so some of the old WoW players who left because of dry content will probably return and some will most likely stay on FFXIV till shiva rolls in and beat that then leave.
Though will it hurt player base probably.
Then again I returned to FFXI that free weekend and didn't feel the urge to play felt like I was lost after a year away and some players might feel that way in WoW turning them off to the game. -

I don't think a lot will happen which will impact me. Within my guild and on my friends list people haven't played WoW in years. For many WotLK was the last they actively played. With a few having trickled over into Cataclysm for a while and just a handful have tried Mists of Pandaria. Odds of them trying WoD is very small.
Overall it's very hard to say, but I don't think there's going to be that many active WoW players in FFXIV. Nor do I think this expansion pack is going to get back a large number of players from other games, just to check it out once more. Mists of Pandaria already failed to truly have that effect as well in my opinion. The temporarily gained numbers weren't too large, especially considering the spread of MMO's such number comes from. -

I probably will give WoD a lick, mainly because I am at a point in FFXIV where I feel a bit like nothing progresses. At least not the way I want it to. Jus how I will handle my subscription Is another thing, which I don't need to worry now though.
I doubt there will be a big change of numbers though. WoW caters to a different playerbase than FFXIV does. -

It will definitely affect the population for sure. Thus, S.E must entice players to return somehow. They need to respond to WoD with something that will lure players back to FF14.

There are some obvious ebbs and flows in MMOs, and that's simply because you can't be in two places at once. I would reckon that there will probably be a temporary loss of players in FFXIV just as I would expect there to be a loss of players in other MMOs when the expansion for FFXIV comes out. Players like to have new content in their games, and the promise of new adventure is always alluring to those who speed run through content.
On a side note, Warlords of Draenor is probably one of the lack luster expansions that I've seen. Not only does it feel like another Cataclysm expansion due to there not being a new land to discover, but there aren't even any new Classes/Races to draw people back in. Everyone I know who used to play the game, myself included, hated the fact that you can literally skip straight to level 90 and play new content as a new player. It takes away from the player who worked hard to accomplish everything they've done, and being put into a party with a healer who doesn't know how to heal or a tank who doesn't know how to tank in a 90+ dungeon is not the way to keep your experienced players happy. It's for this reason that I would give players who return to WoW a month before they've completely geared themselves out and raised all their alts to 100 and realize they have 5 more months before Blizzard releases any worthwhile patches.
I would actually think that due to a lot of console players populating the game that the release of FFXV will actually hurt the population of FFXIV more than WoW ever could. -

Well i had mind to make a thread like this of my own... So since there's already one here:
1. WoW will definitely affect this game subscription base with the new release since the previous release is almost 2 years old.
2. The fan festival and news of the expansion pack might help hold the interest of players who have no desire/or interest to switch to WoW.
3. Nobody will know how the two games perform until Final fantasy 14 manage to release an expansion pack of it's own.
Either way i think it's best to wait until the expansion pack for Ff14 is even announced before really serious conversation about the two titles is tossed around. -

Yes, its going to hurt the game and we will lose a chunk of the population. MMORPG players are known for leaving mmo's when there are new releases and I reckon alot of former World of Warcraft players are going to give the new expansion a chance and see what Blizzard has done in the past years.
I reckon in a month or three we will see alot of players come back, unless they love WoD and stay there. SE needs to release something to convince the players that FFXIV is the better product. -

Game hoppers will flock to it for about a month or two, realize it's the same stuff with a different coat of paint and not really new, then they will lose the subscribers again to other games until the next new patch comes out, repeat.
Kind of like this game.
MMO "gamers" have commitment issues these days.

The real question, is that will players who go to WoD return to FFXIV.
Burning Crusade & Wrath of the Lich King prooved to be prosperous for the brand. However if you look at the numbers after Cataclsym and Mist of Pandaria, there is a significant loss in player base.
As someone who played Cata and MoP, I can say from personal experience that blizzard made so many fundamental mistakes that the brand became tarnished (not to mention d3's release).
However, if this expansion prooves to be like everyone thinks it is (as good if not better than the first two expansions), except high numbers in subscribers and dwindled player bases from other mmorpgs. -

What's happening to the population in the game is pretty typical of this breed of MMORPG. I can say from my own personal experience during patch 2.3 there were far less raid capable players around on Balmung then there were during patch 2.1. It's a given that the population has decreased since it is no longer the next newest thing on the market. There was far less raid recruitment than what I had expected.
My guess is that we'll see fewer returning players than in previous patches because a dwindling population has the reciprocal effect of lowering accessibility. While that works fine for the hack-and-slash genre of aRPGs, it is not something you want in a game priding itself on storytelling, which requires developers to put the setting first. Creating new zones, building up the lore, and basing the end game challenges around those areas probably should have been numero uno on their list. At the very least that would allow them to arrange the end game encounters in a way that is not immediately recognizable as a gear treadmill and not block most of the players from seeing the content when it is fresh. -

Honestly I don't think it will have to be that big of a population decline to make it feel big. I just got back and quite honestly the server I am on feels rather empty either way. Take away a few more and it will feel like WoD killed the server even though in reality it wasn't that big of a number leaving. Then again as 2.4 approaches maybe the total number of players will decline with WoD, but it will still feel like more are playing since the activity on the server will most likely go up because of the new patch.
