I haven't heard anything about that at all. Sounds like the rumor mill running amok.
That's because there isn't any information on this, there is no free transfer or server merge coming any time soon. It would have been on the Lodestone, last Live Letter, or here on the forums.
FFXIV is dying!!!!! 111
No server merges coming anytime soon. Quite the opposite... this game's population is very healthy.
That said, can you imagine how SE (given some recent SNAFUs) might handle server mergers?
"World A will be merged into World B. Because World B is the host world, housing plots/structures purchased on World A will only be carried over to corresponding vacant plots in World B. We apologize for the inconvenience."
I watched the game dye.
It is now blue.
Some servers honestly seem like they need it though. I've been server hopping for the past week or so now just to see different markets and populations along with how they act towards each other. You got the obvious places like Balmung that are packed to the brim, full of RPers, market that is pretty decent considering how fast items sell, though faults when it comes to trying to do FATEs/Hunting Logs as a lowbie (Yoshi's intention to liven up the FATEs are kinda backfiring in that standpoint; can never get more than a silver as a newbie alt due to the max sync'ed 50s tearing through them.)
Then you have other places like Siren for example, up on the top spending tier for housing, and yet seems like a ghost town comparatively. Few people sitting/crafting in town, FATEs pretty much left to themselves, market way slower in sales. My main server is Brynhildr and even that seemed more lively than Siren, yet we're on the bottom tier for housing prices.
I'd love if they offer free server xfer off the more crowded servers to the less populated ones
After reading this I got concerned. Not about just population but names. See my name is unique but my wife is concerned her name could be taken on another server.
How would this work? The account that is active would get to keep the name? Also houses and FC's if there isn't enough room for FC/Personal houses would the server that gets merged be left out? Server mergers happen in every MMO that I have played.
Also this part of the world transfer info page it says this in the disclaimer:
With the introduction of the World Transfer Service, there may be cases where players are requested to transfer to other Worlds due to fluctuations in population. We may also consider the splitting or merger of Worlds. Because of this, there may be instances where players who have used the World Transfer Service are requested to move to a different World. Please note that in such cases, applications for World transfers cannot be canceled or refunded.

How do you think it would be handled right now my wife and I are on one of the lower tier housing servers so if our server gets merged we are risk of losing names,FC and personal house plots due to lack of room.
how do you think they should handle names? Like I said I think the one that is the most active should get priority over taken names.
I know it may not happen anytime soon but it will happen look at FFXI.
Probably should have read more than just the OP's wild accusations. There is no server mergers happening any time soon. Just look all over here, Lodestone, or any other SE/FFXIV:ARR official site. No need to worry about anything at all. Your name and your wife's name are safe.
EDIT:
As far as any merge, or server transfer of any character that has the same exact name. The server that you would be going to, that person already on there, would have priority, just how these things work unfortunately. Though I'm not sure FFXIV:ARR is really set up just yet for server merges just because of how housing works at the moment.
I was not referring to the OP but I know it will happen sooner or later I was just wondering how you all (the community) would think names, houses and things like that would be handled. like lets say 1-10 years from now for example after you worked hard on your character and then you and your house gets transfer and your name is taken or your house plot or lack there of plots you get the idea.
Not everyone thinks alike for names. I've made alts with names I thought for sure would've long been taken but pleasantly surprised when they came up as usable. It helps a ton we're using First/Last names finally in MMO land, so unless its seriously a very generic name there might be some hope on that end. As for housing, if its some-odd years in the future, we've already doubled and perhaps even doubled again in terms of availability. I think the same system I was thinking about for 30-day abandonment could work here too; give people a voucher of the same plot/house type and they can get another place - only concern is items within being transferred to the new server NPC holder. Not ideal but not a total loss.
Now of course looking on the bad end of things, flames razing the forums, cats and dogs living together, that kinda stuff could very well happen too lol...
I hope they would go by who was active or who was played during certain dates, how can you tell what character was made first? we looked up her character name and she was at the bottom, she's saving up for a personal house, sorry if it comes off as me saying FFXIV ARR is dying just thinking about the future server merges do happen.
I noticed you brought up the ver 1 merges, I like how you did the explanation, thank you for that. I have even done a search for my main character (not the one showed as my avatar)and noticed that mine was at the bottom of the list, does that make it the first one made? or is it just listed randomly?
Maybe OP's reading the old server merge news here:
http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com...c7c72707574cb8
What linkshell is what? The Propaganda LS? Stop reading every BS random people without any clue write in game and start following the official forums and twitter.
I kinda wish they would, our server seems pretty dead lately. Here's to hoping 2.4 will liven it up.
On the contrary, I kinda wish the old legacy server splitted again. I kinda missed my Lindblum. In fact, most of the old server names kinda kewl. :)
Like i stated before.
better to ask and find out if anyone else has heard anything about it than just sit and wonder.. especially since it would be a big thing and it was said in more than one LS.
but then i forgot how stupid some forum members are :l
@Midori - I hope that also, its pretty dead even in our peak hours.
I'm a french model.
Well I gotten to thinking, if they did a merger and someone had a inactive account that was older or on a lower veteran reward due to unsubbing and resubbing would the person with the higher veteran reward be at a higher priority since they stuck to the game more faithfully? and this is the future when they do it, it will happen just don't see it happening any time soon.
Also as far as the housing plots/wards, I think they will just add the wards to the exsisting wards, I'll give an example using the current wards numbers, right now we have 8 wards, lets say they merge 2 servers that would make that server have 16 wards (may even need to add more wards but I think you guys get the idea), this is how I think the mergers should effect the housing.
