Just like the title says, I'm curious to see how many players would actually want a Dark Knight job, in hopes that they add it in the future. I'd totally rock out a DRK main if it was a DPS class!

sounds cool. just dont make it like WoW's deathknight class.
Would main drk myself... honestly don't care if its tank or dps, (i know, i know lol the community is split on that issue) i just hope it uses an awesome weapon like scythe or two handed sword, and as long as it still functions as a drk with souleater and other skills of the like. It can work either way! Couldn't say how myself but i know it can!
Scythe is already a BTN weapon so that's off the table. Not to mention, it looks ridiculous as per FFXI.
I'd play it seeing as it's likely the closet I'll get to my ideal class given they made Warrior a pure tank class :(
I kind of want to see a 2-handed Sword Dark Knight. The way I see the Dark Knight is that it basically wears all the same armor as the Tank Classes (Heaviest Armor in the game) but it's primary stat would be Strength instead of Vitality. As such it is a DPS class and not a Tank Class. The problem with this is that most of the Heavy Armor in the game is heavily set up to favor VIT heavy Builds instead of STR heavy builds. This means that they would need to release a new category of Armor specifically for the Dark Knight that has the same Defense and Magic Defense values as the Paladin and Warrior Armor, but which favors Strength over Vitality.
I don't get why so many people love it. There are far more iconic FF jobs that could be implemented.
i loved drk in ff11. i would want it as a debuff centric dps class
If its implemented, I hope its a tank. There are just too few iconic FF jobs that make sense as a tank, and Dark Knight is one of them.
There's tons of other iconic jobs that make sense as DPS.
Better come with a Bat-mobile mount hue hue
I would play DRK, and my husband would play DRK and never play anything else again. It was his fav job in XI. And he was very good at it. :D
There are plenty of viable Tank jobs in Final Fantasy history:
Blue Mage can double as a tank with certain spells
Samurai has been a tank in some cases
In Final Fantasy XI you also had the Rune Fencer that served as a Tank
Red Mage could also be a feasible tank
and that isn't even getting into the Guest Jobs that are present in Final Fantasy Tactics that could serve as Tanks:
Holy Knight is essentially Paladin
Divine Knight (an even more advanced version of Paladin)
Holy Swordsmen (kind of a combination of Paladin and Rune Fencer)
Soldier (yeah that was actually Cloud Strife)
Ark Knight
Yeah there are just so many possible places to draw tank classes from from within Final Fantasy history. We really don't need to mutilate the Dark Knight class in order to make it a Tank.
Followed by your logic, " classified as sword but looks like dagger", we have, if Darknight 's weapon truly is a scythe just for argument sake, a war scythe that being classified as Scythe but looks like a BTN scythe is an ok??? Of course, it is because the logic that one weapon class was taken by one job, thus the jobs come later can not wield the same weapon because it was taken is ridiculous as it sounds.
No, you misunderstand. Those weapons were called daggers, but were swords. That's why Gladiator could use them. They changed the animation and name of the weapon so that it was swords only(this is where your thinking comes in).
Scythes, only being in a single game of the FF series, is already in use by a class that it makes the most sense for. Maybe my earlier choice of words was a little out of place, however scythes are weapons are still ridiculous looking and it would be a crying shame if that's the weapon they choose. Although, DRK would use either 2 handed sword, or 1 handed sword with no shield (leaning more towards the two hand).
This is a war scythe, if you didn't already look it up. Looks more like a spear than a scythe, don't you think?

When I think of Scythe, I mean it as the Deathscythe as in Shinigami's weapon looks. If it is the look like you presented, I would say no as well. Look ugly, way way ugly....
I don't think Dark Knight should use the Reaper's weapon either. It looks stupid and is not a staple of the class. Let's take a look at the older weapon types;
Final Fantasy II - Axes, Swords, and Spears (highest proficiency)
Final Fantasy III - Daggers, Swords, and "dark swords" (which were just katana)
Final Fantasy IV - Swords
Final Fantasy X-2 - Zweihander
Final Fantasy XI - Scythe, Zweihander, Battleaxe, Axe, Sword
Final Fantasy Tactics - Sword
Bravely Default - Swords, Katana
Common theme being swords. I see it thrown around here a lot that Naoki doesn't want this to be like FFXI, so let's hope they don't bring in the scythe to appease FFXI players.
It would be cool. Id like to see an holy counterpart Too.
To add on in FFVI Cecil used a two handed sword and shield, and to be fair, I can't decide what is a better fit IF they add Berserker then would they be better used in two handed swords? Or would DRK? Yet again I still DEEPLY hate the idea of split jobs from the same class but just seems natural since a 2h Axe is already taken. Unless they did something absolutely out of this world with dual two handed swords. But thats another question down the line. As I see it DRK has always in my mind be straight up 2h Sword (let us not mention Cecil in FFVI and in Dissidia uses two completely different weapon types in DRK form) which screams damage and basically being the end all be all powerhouse.
Also as an addition didn't in tactics DRK use magic swords? Then maybe fell blades or something of the like would be ok too...
You just keep saying that scythes look ugly and that's your own opinion. Just because botanists use scythes doesn't mean they can't add one with a slightly different name. It didn't stop them with sch and smn using different books.
What your saying for why it shouldn't be a scythe is all personal opinion, not a limitation of any kind
Some is personal opinion, however this quote is grounded in fact.
Using scythes as DRK is akin to saying Ninja should be able to tank because of FFXI. Just because 1 game did it shouldn't incite the reasoning to have all subsequent versions have it too. It more or less spits in the face of previous fans (prior to XI) to cater to those who played XI.
I would totally rock a dark knight!!! It's sounds like more of a tank tho!
I'd like to see DRK go the Sword and Board route for dps.
Make the DRK focused blades equal or larger then Curtana, make the DRK only shields buckler sized. Think Cecil from FF 4 3DS or Tidus style weapons. Lock DRK out of using the larger kite and scutum shields. This would offer gearing choices to both PLD and DRK. Make 3 swords for each tier. 1 with tank stats locked to PLD, one with dps stats locked to DRK, 1 balanced and available to both jobs. Of course this would require more bosses per tier and loot to be better spread amongst them.
Frankly I think DRK would work fine branching off of GLD, but they need to address an issue that has persisted from PLD's inception, mainly the GLD is more tank-centric than PLD. Unlike WAR which only gained tank focused abilities that accent being a Tank focused Job their main DPS abilities were learned in the class stage, allowing WAR to drop to MRD and gain the CC abilities giving it the ability do more DPS. Unfortunately the inverse is true with GLD and PLD where two astonishingly good DPS abilities (Sword Oath and Spirits Within) are locked to the Job, meaning you have to trade-off either having those two abilities or gaining DPS CC abilities when going as a GLD leaving the conundrum of is there any benefit to the class?
I mean would it really be so bad to swap two defensive buffs from GLD for some offensive buffs from PLD? GLD will have some actual benefit, PLD's balance will be unaffected, and at the very least both PLD and GLA will be more inline with their lore.
Do you guy think Darkknight will follow Odin firgue???
If the Dark Knight Job were to be added to Final Fantasy XIV, I'd almost believe that it would be a DPS class.
It would be a 2-H Greatsword/Fell-blade using class with Chaosbringer or Deathbringer as a Relic weapon.
It would probably require an expansion on the "Scale Mail" style armor and would share this armor type with Dragoons.
It would probably have Dark-styled attacks that would sacrifice Health as a resource, but also have some that drain or return health from damage done.
If it were to come from a base class that splits off I would see it coming from Gladiator more than anything else, but I don't think that it would be a split without a massive overhaul to the way the Job system works.
If you look at Cecil from FFIV remake: His weapon is clearly a 2-H weapon and he has a buckler strapped to his forearm, rather than a full shield that he uses like his Paladin class does. In FFT the Dark Knight class used a Fell-Blade as their job-unique weapon in addition to Longswords and Knightswords. Some games even have them using Katanas, which share traits with Fell-blades from other games. Outside of FFXI, the theme is the same: They use a 2H-Sword as a primary weapon.
Scythes have this great vibe for death because of Death, The Grim Reaper, and are unique as a weapon and style. I don't think that I like that look though for a class that is so heavily tied to a Greatblade in most other final fantasy mythos. I could see a Scythe be used for a Dark Magic Caster class though.
The only job in your list that is more iconic to Final Fantasy than Dark Knight is Red Mage. The rest are good, iconic jobs from FF Mythos, but Dark Knight is probably more Iconic to the series because of FFIV or FFT. It's also usually the foil to the Paladin class where it is present.
I would like to see a holy oriented paladin. Or a holy mage....not healer xD
Sorry to disagree. I'm okay with Cecil being a dark knight, but FFT (psx version at least) doesn't have a static dark knight class. There is a enemy knight entitled Dark Knight, but not a plain job.
Red mage is present in old ffs.
Blue magic (not exactly the blue mage) is present in almost every ff (quina ffix, ffxii, that blonde woman into ffxiii, etc.). << this one is the more iconic.
Samurai is present in fft and ffv.
Mystic knight... ffv for sure and... Stainer (ffix) could be a MK, but ok, I give up on this one. lol.
