How do you guys deal with?

Annoying people in DF?

I mean as a tank i really get annoyed when people don't follow my targets, I mean i do them for a reason in certain dungeons some mobs will spawn mobs if not killed(or stunned by me) Or do other stuff that we try to avoid. And its just easier for me to keep track of the hate(Unless we got 2 blms for example then i usually don't bother)

And when people just run in a group of mobs or attack mobs while i'm running to grab a larger group and expect me to run back with the other 8 mobs because he's to(lazy?) to run to the group.

I usually don't say anything and just try to behave nicely but if people do it again and again i'll just say "Guess who's gonna take over tanking for me" and just let him die if he keeps doing it after that.


What are some of the annoying things you encounter in the struggle that we call random people in DF? =P

Every time a DD does something that he clearly shouldn't, like pulling ST bosses, targeting and getting aggro on marked adds he shouldn't attack, I'll leave em to die, if they wanna tank let em and hopefully the healers are on the same page as me xD

As a player who's tanked in multiple MMOs you just learn to deal with it. Sure it's slightly annoying, but you're a tank, and above being a damage sponge, it's your job to keep hate and take it back from anyone who wants to steal it from you. There's plenty of tricks that will allow you to keep aggro off other players (barring that you don't have too much of a gap between item levels). To tell the truth, the fact that people don't necessarily follow the plan allows the DF to remain interesting. Being able to keep aggro on enemies despite them being targeted separately is what will net you those sweet commendations at the end.

Realize that yes, while other people can make your life easier for you by attacking your target, you must also realize that it doesn't give you the right to suddenly kick or stop doing your job when that player doesn't necessarily follow your carefully laid out battle strategy. Especially since this isn't your raid group, or even people who've necessarily played with a tank who's marked their mobs before, they are players of varying levels of skill and gear that are willing to play with people who they don't know. Keep in mind that while it may only take a split second for you to queue, it takes dps and sometimes even heals 15-30 minutes just to queue up for a dungeon even if it's a random.

As above. Moreover, saying something doesn't have to be a bad thing. Take a moment to explain what the player is doing wrong (in a polite manner. I generally do so without calling the individual player out, unless it's about something minor or class-specific.). Realize that they likely are not doing these things to make you angry or mess up the group; they don't know any better! And unless someone teaches them otherwise, they're going to keep doing the same wrong thing with other groups.

People aren't always receptive of course. Sometimes language barriers get in the way, sometimes people don't read party chat, and sometimes the person becomes standoffish or is simply a troll, but unless you try to communicate, nothing good is going to come of the experience. You're just going to ruin your own time. Teaching someone can also be a very rewarding experience.

keep hate on all mobs

If it's a one off thing of not following markers or pulling ahead of tank, especially in those annoying pre sword oath days then I'll raise it once generally raise it a second time specifically (directing it solely at said early puller etc). If they continue to do it after I've given helpful advice to make my life and the healer's life easier, I'll usually let them do it. I'll grab the add once they die (and usually try to let the healer know in advance what I'm about to do, especially if it's a FC healer) and hope that teaches the lesson.

I'll explain the reasons for my marking, if they continue to hit out of order and in some cases deliberately pull off me I let them die. Sometimes if u see a dps doing this while I heal I also let them die.

I generally work on a 3 strikes and you can tank now deal.

There's few ways to deal :
1. Explain
2. Carry on w/o explain
3 and favorite one. Leave , let them enjoy wait times again ;)

This is what I do, I reserve marks for enemies that have to die first, and just attempt to adjust to the party behavior in all other cases. I feel like marking without voice chat makes battles more difficult to tank than just taking the time to practice and develop good conditional tanking abilities.

My reasoning is that IF your party is well behaved and you're on the same wavelength, marking will clearly make smaller pulls go a lot smoother. But when marking fails, it has a tendency to fail spectacularly if you aren't prepared to recover from it. Then, you waste 5-10 minutes arguing with DPS/whatever, and then they just do it again on the next pull. It's better just to develop strategies and skills for building/maintaining/recovering enmity.

Got my MRD to 15 tonight and ran Sastasha. Had a CNJ and LNC in dungeon gear, and a very low HP ACN.

First thing ACN had Topaz out. After the fight I asked "(ACN) would you please switch to blue carby if you don't mind?" He did immediately so I thought that would be the end of it. First room ACN shoots a ruin at a mob, and I have to dive into action. The LNC sprints off to the next clam, and CNJ sprints through another for treasure. After that fight, I'm left severely tp starved and the ACN decides to pull the next group.

I asked the group "Please don't attack things before me. I'm just starting with MRD and it makes it harder for me." As I'm typing the ACN is already pulling. I say again "(ACN) please don't pull before I do." He sprints to the second boss and pulls. LNC yells "wait for CNJ." I /sit outside the purple gate. LNC runs in to help the ACN and the gate slams shut just as the CNJ makes it to the gate.

I'm pleading "Please please please! Don't pull monsters before I do!" ACN stays silent, but stops pulling.

Final boss I explain the fight and ready check. The LNC and ACN are both jumping constantly. At 75% the lancer limit breaks. I grab 1 grate, other 2 are untouched. I pick up adds. All 4 grates start bubbling. I grab one just to be interrupted, no one else grabs a grate. Now I have 6 adds and the boss. I overpower, blow my cooldowns, attack the boss. He goes down and dungeon over. I get out of there before the end of the cutscene.

I've gotten to 50 on my PLD, SMN and MNK, and never have I seen a group so utterly incompetent (for lack of a better word). I understand people are new, but why oh why did I have to go through that?

TL;DR Just me whining about the worst DF group I've had.

And if any of you three are reading this, please be receptive to what others say. It can put a strain on people and lead to less tanks/heals. Thanks for reading my long-winded story.

In Sastasha, often people don't do the mechanics for the last boss anymore. Even though you explained it, they didn't care because they thought dealing with the adds was unnecessary.

Your experience wasn't that great but it wasn't that bad either for the first dungeon. Sastasha is so easy that it mostly doesn't need to be tanked properly. People can get away with things that would get them killed in more difficult dungeons.

So ... it was annoying, but if you look at the result, you were able to complete the dungeon even though people were running ahead and not following mechanics. When I get a group like that, I try to tank what I can and let other people do whatever unless they get in over their head. If that happens, I tell people to let me tank.

Well Sastasha is waiting for me today. The odd thing is... while in beta2 was my first time in a MMO had no clue what a tank was. So 3 DDs and a healer grouped up and we cleared it without a tank. I was mostly tanking on archer. Today more than a year later time to make my first proper tanking run in Sastasha(have both gld and mrd to 15(but will be going str war to 50 first).

I did do some guildhests before so I have a general idea on the things(my main issue was with DDs pulling stuff all over the place and healers going cleric stance and not healing at all - but apparently I did some good things since I got quite a few double commis). And I MT/OT often enough on my bard hehe.

Depends on how annoying it is.

If its something that can be endured with a little bit of work. I'll just work through it. If its a little more serious, I'll ask them to knock it off. If its something that will be detrimental to the party in general, I'll warn them to knock it off. If they don't then I move to have them kicked. If they won't be kicked, I'll vote disband. If that doesn't go through, I tell the group to vote kick me. That usually puts them in line. But if I feel it won't, I just tell them to vote kick me as I won't continue, they'll get another tank, and I'll get another group. Maybe the next tank they'll get will be more compatible with their 'antics'.

Very rare that it gets that far though. I've only had two instances of that happening, one as a tank, and one as a healer. Usually people quit the nonsense when you ask them to.

if a DD pulls something out of turn or peels aggro away from me, and they do this consistently, then I just let them attempt to tank it. as both healer AND tank. if you don't want to play with the team, then I'm not gonna acquiesce lmao.

when DPS pulls aggro, it can be annoying.. but it's also a good way to get practice.

I look at these as opportunities to better myself as a tank and try to figure out newer ways to hold aggro better.
This also lets me see my limitations as well as small little things that could be done; E.g. using cover more often, flashing more often, rotating my rotations through mobs, etc.

Try to look at these as "opportunities" for improvement, you can actually learn a lot.

I stopped marking targets a long time ago. Instead I focus on what the DPS is doing and follow suit. I do not have the ego that I require them to attack what I say, most people know now the kill order of certain mobs... if not, I simply say kill what first and why. As long as the hate is kept on my end, and the healer can heal me.. DPS can do their job.

Coming from a dps, I can look at a tanks gear and know what they should be able to hold. Now days I rarely get tanks that actually know how to tank. Complaining because dps took hate, and not even trying to get it back. Warriors on df lately have been awful, not using flash, running out of tp, not using infuriate and steel cyclone. When a tank looses hate, it's either expected, because it's a low lvl dungeon, or its unexpected and it's a bad tank. However how dare a dps who's secondary is war tell a warrior how to keep hate. How dare I compaired an i100 tank who can't keep hate, to an i90 warrior who can. From a dps perspective we are expected to shut and when we try to tell the tank, you aren't tanking right, they Blaim us. I'm not saying this is you OP but ussual when dps behave this way it's because a they are either a bad dps, or your being a lazy/bad tank. The other thing is the agro range changes have thrown quite a few dps off. We now grab mobs we use to not standing in the same spot we stood for the last year. A tank who let's a dps die because SE decided to change things, is a bad tank.

Can't really remember the last time someone took over hate.
Still see DPS daily that just run in not caring whether the healer is ready or the tank is near and they just expect them to be ready.

I let those die, If they feel like running in before the healer is ready(When he said give me a second) I'd say, If you wanna tank go level up a tank class.
Same for the people that ignore my markings. Just yesterday in Stone vigil hard? I Marked the enemy that transforms into the mob with the annoying aoe(Had a low ILevel healer) So didn't feel like putting to much strain on the guy.
And i had hate over all the mobs but for some reason even after i explained we should kill this mob first, he still decided to attack something else.

Fine by me, but i'm not gonna save your ass then if you on purpose ignore the markings.

I follow a certain step:

1. Tell them to stop doing those things and explain them why such behavior is bad for the group.
2. Warn them again.
3. Let them die and hope that they learn from their mistake.
4. Try and kick them from the group.

Majority of the time, the dps or healer will be kicked from the group, but lets assume they wont be kicked. Then I take these actions:
5a. If the dungeon is almost over, I will grind my teeth and finish it.
5b. If we are at less than 50% of the dungeon and the idiot is still in our group, I will vote abandon or I will leave the group.

If you mark targets in dungeons, you're bad at tank and should stop and learn how to hold aoe threat. If you lose hate on something, it is the tank's fault not the dps or healer 99% of the time.

Even though I enjoy playing dps, there's nothing more infuriating than a slow tank in 4man dungeons, so I run on WAR most of the time (which also lets me compensate for poor dps as I typically at least match the damage done by DF dps 95% of the time).

HOWEVER early pulling is something I lack tolerance of, if you want to do my job go ahead. As a healer or tank I will inform the offending dps (often ranged DPS, ARC/BRD). If it happens at the next pull I will leave that mob on them.

Consistent early pulls might save maybe one or two minute in the end but it's not something you should inconvenience others with. There ARE bad tanks but dps already have it easy during low levels. Very few (if any) mechanics require the boss to be dps'd within a certain amount of time. Being bad is one thing but not liking a tank's style is another. If you want the job done right then do it yourself.

i only mark mobs thats bring out something bigger, like the caster in amdapor keep that cast voidcall. ive never lost have, even pre-shield oath. it was very difficult, especially with bards. i disagree with focus target dps meaning you are a bad tank. when i dps chooses to sleep mobs and focus on what i am attacking(BLM specifically) i am very gratful because it takes some pressure off me. do i have to have that, no, but it sure is nice.

If ranged dps is pulling early, then YOU start running to the next pull with a few almost dead mobs on you and start the next one, while the ranged dps finish killing the old mobs.

I do not mark, follow dps, much easier.

Only time I mark is if something like a bee with Final sting needs to die right away. And then I only mark that target.
Marking everything is not really necessary.

The other day, I had a tank who would go afk without saying anything to the party, wouldn't mark mobs, and wouldn't hold agro. I helped marked some mobs and our party was able to kill a small number of mobs in the dungeon while the tank was away, and when he came back, he threw a fit and decided to purposely NOT take agro without saying a thing. When we asked him to tank properly, he stated that I could tank instead of him because I marked mobs and tanked while he was AFK.....
I pray the OP isn't a tank with an ego like this guy, because while I don't mind if he is an ass to me, it wasn't respectful to any of the other party members who had to wait for the queue and put up with his bad tanking and on/off afking.

I never mark mobs in dungeons unless a single target really has to die to make things smoother.

marking everything is wasting my time and there's, I will grab a mob or two or three because I know I can hold that mob, if I think I will have problems I will only pull what I know I can handle. I'm in the mind frame that if I mark everything I'm a bad tank no questions.

marking is for when you really need a kill order not for every single enemy in a dungeon. worse still when a tank marks a single target boss.. so pointless.


as dps I absolutely hate tanks who mark everything and yes I ignore it cus I main blm, my damage comes from aoe not single target nonsense. I'll help teach that tank a lesson by pulling everything all dungeon long to show them they are not good tanks cus they cant hold agro. A good tank will hold agro no matter what until they know the dps will kill that mob.

Now don't confuse me with someone who pulls on tanks on purpose, I always give the tank time to establish hate and do there thing but I will not hold back at all. yes I will target rotate if im getting close to pulling on single target but never on aoe.

as healer I hate tanks who don't gen proper hate, soon as I heal you the mob heads to me.. need to be a better tank.

also as healer / smn.. I apply dots to everything so sleeping targets are limiting to me and does not suit my play style, even as tank I will not abide sleeping enemies unless its vital. I aim to get through each instance as quickly as possible with no trouble and a tank who knows how to hold hate is vital to it.

I will not leave or quit or name call but damn I will bitch to my fc after...
