Areas in the game that we can see, but can't explore.

I'm making this thread because I've come across a few places in the game where I would really like to explore what's there, but it's in an area that is gated off or just plain inaccessible to us right now.

I have three examples of places I would like to explore that clearly have areas beyond them.

Central Thanalan

There is this gate at the bottom of the map, but what's behind it? I want to know.

North Shroud - Ixali Logging Grounds

Here we can see the Ixali have built these platforms from stacking logs together that creates a pathway leading to an Ixali structure of some kind. I'd like to explore that.

I have often wondered about this. There is nothing mentioned on the map for this structure. As you can see it structure created by many bricks of stone, of unknown size and depth, yet it does have a very elaborate embroidered door that is slightly cracked open. I want to not only explore these ruins, but know what they are in general. Why is this doorway here, that is even opened slightly, unable to be accessed? A dungeon entrance that was left out by the devs? New dungeon in the future? Man, I wanna go in there.

I didn't include areas seen in Coerthas because I think we will be getting to see those places in 2.4 (at least I hope).

That said, there is one place I want to go to in Coerthas that doesn't involve Ishgard.. and it's a secondary Ixali settlement/camp that is north of Natalan. There's no map for it, but there is a gate in which you can tell more Ixali are on the other side of it.

So, what other areas in the game have you seen that look like you should be able to reach and explore but can't? Please share.

The Central Thanalan one, I want to think it's the entrance to Sil'dih, but there's an area called "Sil'dih excavation site" in the opposite side (near the portal to western thanalan) so I'm a bit confused.

Either way based on lore I'm pretty sure Sil'dih will become a dungeon, we just have to wait.

If FFXIV follows an expansion pattern anything like XI then we'll see new regions added to Eorzea with the first few expansions.

Unlike other MMOs that tend to introduce a new isolated continent XI spent the first few expansions directly expanding the original game world. We're already fairly certain that the expansion next year will see us expanding into Coerthas and Dravania, and there's a fairly high chance we'll begin moving towards Ala Mhigo.

Most of those gates you see scattered around indicate a planned addition to the world at some point. Not all of them will necessarily be used in the end (plans change) but we at least know they want to do something there.

I second the request to see Nym though. Of all the locales in the game right now I want to visit Nym the most!

East Shroud has an area far east which is currently blocked by some wreckage, but should lead toward Ala Mhigo.

There is a Ixali camp just north of Natalan guarding a gate which looks to lead towards Coerthas Eastern Highlands.

Griffon Crossing (where we fight Gilgamesh) should lead to Coerthas Eastern Lowlands.

The Snowcloak should eventually thaw to let us enter Coerthas Western Highlands, where Shiva should be (though it looks like Shiva will instead be an instance at Snowcloak based on some of what we've seen...).

There's also a Garlean base on the mountains to the west of Coerthas; on that topic, most of the Garleans strongholds we simply haven't set foot in, I'd love for the Mor Dhona one to be a dungeon or something. Would be a nice way for them to make Doom Train a boss fight.

Upper La Noscea has some Nym ruins blocking a path to the volcano; there is some old concept map which has this exact location marked as "Zone to new Volcano zone".

There is that Amal'ja tower in Southern Thanalan we cannot reach, though there is a gate deep in their camp that should lead to it.

Eastern Thanalaan. At the Highbridge on the side of the north cliff is a massive statue but riddled with paths. Maybe there is an underground pathway.

There is a path in North Shroud that obviously leads somewhere, in the southwest area by the golems.

The Second Binding Coil?

I imagine The Burning Wall (which has a similar path), will lead to the Third Binding Coil. Then there is the red crater in Coerthas and the area in Mor Dhona which also lead to Dalamud wreckage. Mor Dhona has a very obvious path obscured by some crystals, Coerthas has some out of place looking rocks they could remove.

There is a gate in East Shroud, along the wall between Central and South Shroud.
There are 2 gates leading more North from Old Gridania, one to the "rich" area, another looks like to out side the city.
Lots of "closed" gates in U'Ghamaro Mines, but the doors have windows and you can see there is more that could be there.
A lot of the dungeons have closed off areas, some have been opened up in hard modes, but there can still be more. Totorak and Stasha, have the most side areas that interest me.
Also anywhere that has vertical ladder, why can't we climb up? Lost of little places in zones could be opened up like this, nothing of interest really, just bugs me we can't climb a ladder, they could do that in Everquest 15 years ago... Surly it can't be that hard.

Some of those areas are eventually reached via the quests for the Kobold Beastman dailies.

I want to explore Garlok's Lair... In the most recent patch hunts made Garlok an actual creature that we can fight, but I still wanna trash up his domain. >.<

Also, any of the areas that get cutoff between the zone lines. I know it's just empty space but I like to explore dang it. I Once " fell through" one of the zone lines in Pharos Sirus and got to actually walk up and down one of the stair cases, was a whole new look at the area. Of course when I got to the other end I hit the back of the zone line and was warped back up top where I had started. But in other areas too this could be cool, like in Limsa Lominsa, all the bridges in/out of the city, they exist, why can't we walk across them?

There's still a massive Garlean Flagship sticking out of The Nail in Coerthas. But i'm hoping Dzemael Darkhold that's underneath it will lead up there someday with a (Hard) mode restyle.

Same for the wreckage at the middle of the lake of Mor Dhona.

Also looking west from Camp Tranquill, to the side of where The Lost City of Amdapor's supposed entrance is, there's a huge reach of cliffs and mountains that have large jagged edges sticking out of it. A perfect badlands enviroment to explore with no way to get there.

And lets not forget the closed off Garlean Fortress in the East Shroud. You can look over the gates, but you cant get close.

Knew about that, but still want it to be a playable dungeon. I mean, how cool would it be exploring a derelict ship with possibly active security systems in there or garlean weapons for us to use.

Off the coast of Vesper Bay is the other Garlean base too, in the middle of the water. Castrum Meridium or something. That would be really cool, sort of oil rig like dungeon would be spectacular. Especially in a storm or so.

Saw something in South Shroud as well, a road blocked by some rocks. Gonna try to snap a pic when I can. I hope we'll be able to get there some day!

The Garlok who's lair that belongs to is actually the S rank hunt monster that can appear in Eastern La Noscea. One of his possible spawn locations is infront of that cave. (or alternatively on the other exit on wineport's side)

Can't recall off the top of my head, but isn't it just a tiny bit that is left? Like the nose/tail of the craft? I guess it depends how deep Silvertear Lake is.

Nym gets my vote, I still feel they could turn that into an epic 100 floor dungeon, theirs enough levels, though sadly will most likely be a hard mode, they could do so much more with it though

Copperbell really was a terribly written dungeons. Sastasha? Here there be pirates. Also the pirates are working for a fish. Copperbell? OK, it's a mine. Oh giants, why are they here? OK, they were slaves or something? It really isn't until the final Guildhest that you get any insight into this... Then there is that door at the end... What's behind it? Who built it? Why is it there if Copperbell (Hard) is going to stop at the exact same point?

This. I have been itching to explore the wreck of the Agrius since watching the opening cinematic of 1.0.

There appears to be a potential spot where a zone line may someday be in Southern Thanalan, in the southwest corner of the Sagolii Desert. Another one is in East Shroud, at the far eastern tip of Larkscall. That one I'm guessing will eventually lead us to Ala Mihgo.

I like to compare the 1.0 maps to the 2.0 maps. If you take a look at them it appears at least to me like the zones aren't too much smaller than their 1.0 counterparts, we just don't have access to big chunks of them like we used to. Coerthas is the best example of this. Today we can only visit the Central Highlands, but there were also Central Lowlands between Dragonhead and Mor Dhona (those must be totally gone forever, because that's where Aurum Vale was), then Western Highlands, Eastern Highlands, and Eastern Lowlands.

There's also stuff like the Nanawa Mines and Mun-Tuy Cellars, which used to be open world dungeons. Today they're just a point on a map that no one notices.

Sil'dih is the name of an ancient city-state that used to be in Thanalan. There was a war between Sil'dih and Ul'dah, and you can guess who won. You learn more about it doing the quests for MNK. I think the quests for Miner talk about it more too.

I remember back in 1.23 they started opening up areas of the game that were meant for future expansion so people could at least check out some of them before they vanished. There was a section in the deepest parts of Copperbell Mines that was an ancient Sil'dih aqueduct (it reminded me of the Toraimarai Canal in FFXI).

In the room where we fight Ouranos in Copperbell Mines (hard) there are some uncovered steps and a sealed doorway. Those are probably Sil'dih ruins, too.

Yeah, the Hechatoncheirs were enslaved by some previous ruling dynasty of Ul'dah. They revolted and were sealed in the mine for several hundred years.

It was a normal mine, but an older dynasty (the ancestor of Ul'dah probably) used hecatonchires as slaves to do the mining. They were later sealed to die. In the present day they broke free and are having their revenge.

Ugh, this is exactly why I hate this kind of "storytelling". I find it very easy to read through quest dialogue and pick up information there, but throw information in a menu? I'm almost certainly going to miss it (although I obviously didn't with the Guildhest... Odd...). Almost exactly why I ended up hating FFXIII, it's a complete break of immersion. Stuff like this really could do with being integrated better, even if they take the laziest option and just dump scraps of what would be in the menu around the dungeon (see: Tam-Tara Hard). They could have thrown a NPC in at the first boss of Copperbell who explains about the hecatonchires after you clear the waves right before the hecatonchires boss actually drops down, and I'd have loved that.

Anyway, thank you. Guess I need to go through the Duty Finder menu for a bit now...

The dialog for the quest to go to Copperbell explains all that, too.

#11 Papashan To be plain, giants have seized control of the place.

The bottom right of the U'Ghamaro Mines (noted I said U'Ghamaro Mines, not the whole of Outer La Noscea map) cannot be entered. The door is locked.

I too want to see the wreckage of the Agrius up close and personal.

Also, there's a path in Larkscall in East Shroud that's blocked by fallen trees where you find a Garlean squad. I suspect that's supposed to be the road towards Ala Mihgo.

If your are referring to the room in the lower right section, it is access by talking to an NPC when doing certain Kobold Beast Tribe quests.

What's inside?

South, south, south where the Sagolii Desert just stops, at a rock formation that's maybe 6-7 meters high, but no matter how hard I try, my heroic self just can't clamber over those rocks to head for the far horizon.

It's almost as frustrating as running into the "Exhaustion Zones" in SWTOR, when you just want to explore more of Tattooine or Hoth...

There are some rocks blocking a path in Old Gridania

For Nym I want to see them use jumping sorta like t3 but maybe make them more a puzzle than a straight run.

I don't remember much from the quest NPCs, but I think they talked about it being an ancient home for the Duskwight elves. With all the racism toward them in Gridania, they might have been hoping to revive it as a center for them. Or at least get more information as to what happened in the first place.

I would like to see more lore about the race tribes of this game. I would like to see their "home" or "place of origin" with camps/towns/villages. Not only the duskwight elves but the highlander hyurs etc. Back to our to topic this game has a lot of places unexplored and I hope we will be able to visit those places.

Ala Mhigo is my biggest hope at this point. More than anything I want to go there.
