Opinion on Female Hyur Run Animation?

So I decided to give the female hyur model a shot because I think it works well with the kinds of classes I go for. The problem is their run animation doesn't make a lick of sense for the equipment they are wearing.

At least the way I imagine it, the reason a woman would ever run with their arms coming out like that is if they are being imbalanced due to having a rather large bust and are wearing loose clothing. It looks fine for robes and the cocktail dress that's supposed to pass for a female adventurer outfit, but that arm movement makes no sense for heavier armor or most medium armor. It feels kind of embarrassing to watch.

Any ladies out there willing to give their opinion on this? Am I wrong? Do I need to start stalking women more and watch how they move? I need help! :p

It's something that grows on you, i don't really pay it any attention, but compared to how female hilanders run i welcome it. I feel like asking everyone i see run "you lift?"

I despise it.

I wish they gave us the option of choosing which run animation we'd like to use (just like using /changepose to choose your idle standing animation). I'd much rather use, say, the Miqo'te run animation instead, which looks like a (generic) athletic gait rather than... whatever that is.

I was a female midlander in 1.0. The run animation was one of the main reasons why I switched. I couldn't handle the swishing any longer D:

When I fist saw the animation for it I was a little annoyed, but now I am used to it. I also either use sprint or a mount to move every time that I can XD It would be cool if we got to choose our movement animation.

The animation that is used when you're just moving without sprint? I run like that irl. Not a problem for me.

In 1.0 I was a midlander & for the longest time the way I ran bugged the hell out of me. So in 2.0 I switched to highlander which I ♥ so much, but I have a few midlander alts & it honestly doesn't bug me as bad now. I mean sometimes I look at it and think, "I look like I'm trying to dry wet nail polish as I run..." but it is more tolerable now lol.

Highlander run is far better than the derpy midlander run. But, they could both use improvement.

To be fair, all the races' run animations do look a bit silly but in different ways and all of them look fairly strange when you are wearing heavy armor.

I recently switched to female midlander hyur and I'm perfectly fine with it. It's dainty... and I like that. Just my opinion as a female irl. If you want less dainty, go for highlander. :)

Yeah, I'm actually getting used to it now. It has kind of grown on me with just a little time spent on the character.

Still looks hilarious in heavy armor though :D

I think it was described is that the midlanders are meant to be more like asians/japanese games, the females are much more girly and dainty, and the highlanders are more western where strength seems to be more valued.

I really hated the midlander run at first. Its not so much that I think it looks bad (I dont like it, but I dont think its bad) but it felt like it was forcing a very clear archetype/personality on that entire gender/race combo just through the run. The reason our characters dont do much or show much expression in cutscenes was because we were supposed to use our imagination on what our characters looked like. But then, after looking at other races' run animations, they all look pretty bad except miqo'te and midlander if you like it.

Aion has a decent running animation for females, and it's a Korean game through-and-through. Blade & Soul gives the Jin and Gon actually decent running animations (and really nice sprinting ones), though as a martial arts-oriented game I suppose that's to be expected. Hell, even their loli-shota animal ear race, the Lyn, has animations that are less absurd. And for Japan... well, I thought the Miqo'te were supposed to be their pandering race, and look at them. Ironic that they have the best running animation in the entire game, isn't it?

It is definitely not an Asian thing, and definitely not a Japanese thing. It's just... a thing. And it's kind of terrible. If they're going to impose this sort of thing on our characters, I'd really, really have to ask that they give us the choice instead of forcing it upon everyone who just happens to think that midlander makes sense for their character in every other regard.

This actually brought something to mind that might be an interesting thing that could potentially be added to the game, being able to select a base animation set that represents your character's personality, sort of similar to what DCUO did.

Each character would have a number of different base animation sets that they could choose from (would really only affect idle, sprint and maybe run/walk); one choice being attached to your race+gender, and then a few others being based on gender+personality. The race+gender ones would of course be only available to those of that race/gender while the personality ones would be available to all races.

Examples Animation Sets for an Elezen Male:
- Elezen (Male)
- Brooding (Male)
- Friendly (Male)
- Meek (Male)
- Brave (Male)

Players would be able to chose and switch between these sets via your character config settings.

This would of course require time and resources to implement, but it would be a nice little addition.

Well, the difference is that the highland hyur are built to punch people through a wall if they get angry, so their run animation exudes strength. The miqo'te and midland hyur do have a distinctive feel to their gate though.

The midlander run looks bad to me, very awkward and inefficient, but highlander, which I am, looks just fine. :)

Also it's gait, not gate. :P

"Let the wookie win." That is what your comment made me think of Highlanders.

As to the topic, I have never made a Midlander, so I don't have an opinion as to how they run. I do have a Highlander but I either don't pay attention to how she runs or I've simply forgotten. Now the male Miqo'te running animation, on the other hand, I feel does more twisting than is really needed. Though the way that their tale just flails about is rather hypnotic.

Before idle animations, I was more amused at how much they stood like robots.

That animation is the only reason why i'll always hate female midlanders

I was midlander in the beta 3 and I decided to roll highlander on the beta 4 because not only the running animation, but the facial traits as well. Highlander looks more sexy, while midlanders are "cute". Also, gotta love my muscles.

Female hyur run animation got nothing on female hume run animation. NOTHING.

I like them both just fine though. Better than mithra's elbow-everyone-out-of-the-way run animation. That got irritating fast.

I got a comment on the running animation once. Its so cute. xD I love when mine does it in the big scary spiky Dragoon Armor. xD

My opinion varies with the day. Some days, I think it's dainty and cute, other days, I think it's absurd and ridiculous. My opinion regarding their idle animations is much more consistent: they're all stupid. Probably couldn't play one as a main.

Everyone has their own sense of aesthetics, and sometimes seeing something from a different perspective is all it takes to make it good. After walking away from the game for a bit and coming back, the midland hyur animation looks fine. It really comes down to expectations. It simply didn't meet my preconceived notion of what it would look like with higher level armor. I kind of blame the starting outfits and the lack of a comprehensive dressing room, since those are kind of important in finding a match that fits.

I absolutely agree. They lost a lot of their previous character when they were brought over, and arguably their design made more sense for a society dominated by the female gender back in FFXI than what we have here. For the sex doing most, if not all of the heavy lifting (metaphorically speaking), they sure do lack the muscle. They look fine for those looking for a cutsy cat option.

While I know a few who run that way, I still don't like how they run.

There's a reason why Hyur females are one of the LEAST played characters in the game. They're ugly and the run animation is... um... like what a 13-year-old boy thinks a weak little girl runs like. NOT the run of the Warrior of Light. Dear YoshiP -- PLEASE update it and I'll roll this character.

am not reading through 4 pages i just wanna say that my main has been a midlander since 1.0 and she is still my main i love her lil girly run i think its very cute and its also my favorite run animation in the game (with miqot'es being the 2nd best however theres already too many catgirls in this game so i wont ever be making a catgirl alt) midlanders have the 2nd best sprint animation with viera being my favorite

It's a big no no for me, was about to fantasia to a female hyur back in ARR thus i created an alt to see how they move ... let's say this result in me playing a Hyurgoth until heavensward cames out :D

I think if you want a cool-looking hero, it will be the death of you. It's like lalafell where, I am sorry, being cool is an uphill battle. If you want to be cool, and look like a competent and athletic adventurer, highlander is there for you.

But it is cute, has a lot of charm and character, and it's fun. I don't see my character as this super epic heroic figure, and I think it suits her. That said, I think the idea is good, but the execution lacks refinement. The profile on the swing is almost entirely horizontal and not very flattering. Needs a nicer arc... Hope the animation is refined with 7.0.

2014-2022 they still run the same. Lol at this necro thread.
