Midgardsormr Markets: A Question

Since all of the posts here seem to just be FC advertisements or people looking for Coil statics, I think I'm going to change it up a bit.

This question goes out to everyone who plays in our world's markets.

Why are the raw materials for primal glowing weapons so expensive compared to the final synthed weapon? Even when it is HQ, the gil made from selling the components for a glowing primal weapon are equal to (or more) than taking the time and effort to actually sell the finalized synth. Why is that? As it stands right now, there is no point at all in synthing these primal weapons. Selling the mats for them is where the real gil is at. I find this phenomenon kinda ridiculous.

And while I'm on the topic of cutting edge synths... I have another series of questions. Does it seem like our markets concerning endgame items is slower than that of other worlds? It seems we are slower to get new items up on the markets, and slower for people actually buying them. Do you think this is indicative of something? Like we don't care as much as a group about cutting edge items? Or perhaps we all just tend to desynth and synth ourselves, so we don't have to buy as much on the markets? I'm honestly very curious.

This is easily answered by looking at the population of our server. Strictly by characters created, we are the 4th smallest US server with ~66,615. This isn't exactly indicative of how many active players we have, however it gives you a good idea. This will of course affect the availability of certain end-game items, as there simply isn't as many people on here as compared to Leviathan with ~91,600 created.

Couldn't give you an answer as to why the mats cost so much, but the reason the weapons don't sell is because they're borderline useless outside of vanity and even then their looks aren't worth the price.

Is xivsoul even updated anymore? None of the new minions are there... so I suspect it may be old data we are all seeing.

While I'm not on Midgardsormr anymore, the issue of the weapon prices can be easily answered.

To get a -reliable- way to obtain demimaterias of any kind (whether they are primal/battle/field demis), you need to desynthesize your way to 90-100 in the corresponding classes, and THEN desynthesize what will yield the demimaterias. When primal weapons are concerned, we're talking about ten battlecraft demimaterias and three primal demimaterias.

In order to profit the most off of your synth, you would rather obtain those demimaterias by yourself. Before I left there were plenty of relatively cheap Ifrit demimaterias on the markets, but the supplies for the other ones were very low.

In order to obtain the demimaterias you'd have to farm the primals in question and then actually win a weapon so that maybe your desynthesis will be successful and have a -chance- of yielding 1-3 demimaterias. The only reliable way to get them is to have a full party of friends and have every desynth involved with the weapons spread out amongst the members and then pool all the spoils together.

This takes time, and farming Moogle HM is as dull as it gets. So as a crafter when you finally have all of the things and it's all said and done, you try to make a weapon sale and people won't understand why you're not selling all these ingredients synthesized into a shiny weapon at marketboards value + 100k gil, as opposed to the price you had in mind for all that time and effort you put into getting the damn things and/or leveling your desynthesis skills. So you cut it a bit, and then a bit more, and then a bit more, until finally your weapon sells for less than you had anticipated.

Now pair up that phenomenon with the fact that the Midgardsormr population either wants to hold onto their gil or doesn't have any in the first place, and that's why the economy for items that have a bit more rarity to them is terrible.

Thanks for the analysis, Ihate Catboys. I distinctly remember you as someone who bought up choice materials en masse when the prices were good. And while I won't miss that competition, Midgardsormr will feel the loss of an active crafter. Why did you change servers, and where did you go (out of curiosity)? Lodestone still shows you on Midgardsormr.

As for anyone else reading this post... I would like to delve deeper into the concept that people on our server "either wants to hold onto their gil or doesn't have any in the first place". Why would that be? Are we too busy hunting that the glamour aspect of the game isn't worth the gil?

And here is a far better question. What could we do to spark interest in the market for the average consumer on Midgardsormr?

Catboys pretty much said everything I had been thinking myself. Higher profits are made when you yourself go out and obtain the items you wish to sell at the expense of time (and not everyone has the time nor patience to make money). Lots of people don't seem to understand economics either, and just undercut others for ridiculous amounts in hopes of being able to sell something without realizing the product's true cost due to time/effort in creating it, but they cut their own profits considering people will naturally buy whatever is the cheapest listed item on the marketboard.

As for your next concept, those who don't have gil either don't have much of an interest to make gil or spent it all on materia for novus lol. I can imagine some people holding onto their gil because there still really isn't anything worth spending it on at the moment in some people's eyes. I bet some are still holding out for their own personal houses. Expensive glamour doesn't appeal to everyone either.

I tend to agree with your overall assessment of the situation, Kaitlin. I, myself, am saving towards buying the largest personal house available. Of course it stands to reason that others will be doing the exact same thing.

Perhaps the wise long-term plan would be to start saving up mats now for when personal housing is released in 2.4 (2.38?). It is a pretty solid bet that people who can afford a house, will also want to furnish said house.

I could further speculate (the myth materials market comes to mind)... but I will save you the long-winded theorizing.

As far as the Midgardsormr consumer is concerned, you have two kinds of people. The one kind that has mysteriously high amount of money and that will bypass any advertising or any efforts made by crafters to buy straight out of the marketboards on choice items at very inflated prices. You've seen it happen and it will happen again. I personally hated playing the marketboard game as I preferred to leave a PF up and just do other things while my Final Fantasy does the advertising for me. In some cases, as my PF was up, something I would've sold for a million gil would get bought out for four times the amount on the marketboards. These people have so much money that they just bypass opportunities to save money and funnel theirs to the very few crafters who bother clogging the marketboards with their things.

Then you have the type that wants an item but insists on providing all the materials, thinking it will be cheaper, even if said materials aren't in their inventory and just as they are trying to settle with you for the price of a synth you notice them buying the materials you yourself had set up for auction and it makes you facepalm.

Otherwise once in a blue moon you will have the reasonable customer who understands that buying a fully-crafted item from you will be cheaper overall in the first place and will happily settle with you.

On a different note, I moved servers as this character is an alt to my main raiding one. We needed someone to powersynth a new FC to rank 6 in Balmung so we could get another large house after getting rid of Historia's.
