Might be that the true black would obscure details in most pieces of equipment.
I saw someone in the aptly called soot black- even then I noticed that the shadows of, and form given edges were hard to see.
Maybe not the response you were looking for but it would be my one guess, since adding the color with the system they have would probably be a two second thing- minus updating the client.
Snow White sucks too!
While we're on the subject, does new gear sheen still get ruined by dyes? They told us they where changing it so it doesn't ruin the material.
Black doesn't have to be Boo-Hoo-Broodmeister or Edgy-Edgelord Black.
It can make a charming complement to other colors to bring out their boldness. It can slim the figure in places to provide the illusion of less form.
But yeah, I'm sure many people would just do it to make them look dark and edgy.
Please no. We already have Guts Armor we don't need more dark n' edgy stuff.
The dev team is allergic to colors that aren't washed out and unsaturated.
the issue with piano black (which is considered true black) and pure white (its closest to pure white being Baby powder white) is once you remove all colours details start to be missed with white you can see some things but a lot of the texture is now gone and if it was piano black to much detail will be absorbed unless the out sine of the details turned into white,
using licorishe black (a slightly coloured shade of black) #1A1110 (r 26 g 17 b 16)
and Baby powder white #FEFEFA (r 254 g 254 b 250 )
these would start to become to dark and bright to allow textures on, and start messing with the light mapping as well as bump mapping, it is a slight nightmare when using these colours, since they would be very difficult to work with
as a extra note pure white is only used for un textured models but even then in most cases most 3d modellers dim the lightning or colour it slightly to see errors better.
GW2 IMO has the best armour dying system I've seen in an mmo. Each piece of armour has 3 dyable areas (with some exceptions). They have a few "tinted" black colours (like black&red, black&blue) which just give a slightly coloured shine to the black dyes which helps keep some detail.
Really?
I mean...really? Compared to 1.0 this is a wonderland of rainbows. One of my extremely numerous pet peeves is the new direction of over-saturation they gave it over the natural look (without grime and grit other games try to do) they where going for before.
^ This.
1.23's natrual and strict approach to colours/gear-designs was a breath of fresh air, I absolutley loved it . ARR sort of deviated from that *cough* Crystal Tower.
For those who missed out this is how the 1.23 Character Creation System greeted you to your class choices;
It depends on the piece of gear.
Some pieces of gear dye based on the material you're dying onto, as per the development teams intention.
So cloth will sometimes dye a more greyish colour.
Some gear will dye solid black, such as leather;

I would like the choice of the white color that comes naturally with the spring skirt.
Those saying we have no 'real' blacks, could you provide some examples of what you mean? When I dye gear like Militia Tights or the boots Shioban has on display black, I am very satisfied with the result. Anything more black and it would look like somebody has used MS Paint to colour over the shoes; not a look I'm fond of. I've agreed with the shading issue in numerous posts when it comes to other colours or dyed gear losing it's gleam, but this seems like making an issue out of nothing imo. Soot Black looks a realistic black on everything I've tried dying.
Throw in a random non-leather example (as Shioban provided one):

Black Hempen Top, black Spring Skirt. Seems black to me?
You know, I was thinking just that and went to play about some more. For the life of me, everything I dye black in sunlight looks black with a subtle sheen from the light hitting it. Another few examples (ignore the fact my hair has changed since the last screenshot, these are taken with a trip to the Aesthetician between the previous pic):
Leatherworker set minus the body since it's already black by default:

Militia Tights, a regular example used that dying shades are bad, with some Cloth based gloves:

Even the full dyed Drachen Armour looks black and retains its metallic sheen:

I can only surmise that people who think this isn't black don't have much experience with sunlight and its effects on colour... ;)
I'm sure it irritates the crap out of all the people who do conjoined names I see, like "Joeblow Theblack - to find out they're really "Joeblow Thesortablack" or "Joeblow Thereallydarkgray"
I can deal with it :)
How about at least some dyes that better match colors found in existing gear?

It may be hard to see in this image, but it is noticable in the environment lighting how different the blacks are between the soot black dyed spring skirt and the naturally black yukata top. Both are of a similar material texture. There are no dyes that match the red or blue yukata either, and the snow white dye does not match the yukata white.
If you can't see the difference you should consult an oculist ;p

If SE cant make a true black dye, they should at least allow us to dye every single piece of gear, that way we can fit our glamour better.
