Updated launcher is not recognizing directx on Windows Server 2008 R2

After the launcher update for the 2.3 patch, the new launcher (launcher version 2014.06.24.0000.0001) is giving me an error that states "The latest version of DirectX is required to play FINAL FANTASY XIV. Please download and install the DirectX End-User Runtime, then restart the game."

The operating system is Windows Server 2008 R2, 64bit. I had no problems running the game prior to the launcher update. I was playing the game just fine earlier in the day.

I had no problems updating the launcher and then updating the game on my other computer which is running Windows 7, but I'm having the above problem on my server computer.

I have tried updating the graphics card drivers and have verified that directx is working properly using dxdiag. I have also tried running the launcher in Windows 7 compatability mode to no avail.

Please advise.

I'm having the same Issue on Windows Server 2012. I work from home for a living as a developer, which is why the weird OS. Was playing all evening before it went down for maintenance, now after updating the launcher refuses to start up.

This is really irritating. Anyone have any ideas?

Have you actually updated DirectX then? I don't see any of that in your posts. Graphics drivers never affect the DX version. What you actually have not done is exactly what the message says. Please download and install the DirectX End-User Runtime, then restart the game.

Furthermore, it kind of baffles me why a "developer" would miss something so simple and is using a server (on which you supposedly run your core business) as a gaming device and do not have it running as a VM, increasing safety and scalability.

Having the same issue on Windows Server 2008 R2. I use it because you can get it free as a student, so saved me from buying windows 7.

Double checked that Direct X 11.1 (latest version available for 2008 R2) and 9.0c runtime are installed. All other windows updates completed. up to date graphics drivers etc etc.

Game was running perfectly fine prior to the update.

The problem is not with directx. I've already tried updating directx which doesn't do anything because it IS the latest version. As several of us have verified by now, the game was working just fine prior to the launcher update. The newest launcher is simply unable to detect that directx is installed and does not go any further.

The issue seems to be related to the latest patch and it not being compatible with server 2008 R2 in some shape or form

I would also like to chime in to say that I'm experiencing the same issue. I also use Windows Server 2008 R2 and can no longer update after patch 2.3. I have tried updating my drivers, reinstalling DirectX, and updating just about everything that has an update. However, the game still does not recognize DirectX.

Might be happening to Server OS in general. I am having the same issue on Server 2012 R2.

Thanks for confirming Kronoman, could suggest there's a process/service/ indigenous to home versions which isn't available by default to server versions. I'm guessing most if not all of us have gone through the steps to turn the server edition into a workstation?

Yeah, I've still got all the server tools I use during development, but I've got almost everything that I wanted out of the Windows 8 feature set turned on also. Have half a terabyte of games, only one not working right is this one, post update. I don't know of any services that can be queried for DirectX info, and I checked my registry settings reflect the availability of DirectX 9.0c and 11.1 (it's fine), so kind of at a loss.

I'm half tempted to take the .exe apart with a decompiler but I don't have the time today. Regardless, I'd love to be able to play when the work day is over. :(

Anyone know if there is a way to confirm if they have seen this post or are even aware of this issue? I even submitted a squenix support ticket but never got confirmation. I still need to redownload the entire game so I am hoping to get this resolved asap.

So, I've been trying to find a workaround. After verifying the registry in Server and Windows 7 show the same DirectX version I went to the assemblies themselves.

The primary DX9 assembly is d3d9.dll which resides in System32 in the Windows installation direction, the helper libraries are d3dx9[something else here].dll

There was only one mismatch.

The version number of DX on the d3d9 file itself on my version of server (Server 2012 Standard) is 6.2.9200.16384, it's dated 07/25/2012.

By comparison the d3d9.dll from Windows 7 Home Premium is 6.1.7601.17514 and is dated 11/20/2010. File size is different by 1 kilobyte.

As an experiment I tried backing up my DX9 assembly and swapping in the assembly from Windows 7. Unfortunately, same error message. So, however they are determining version, it's not through registry or version number stamps on the assembles.

Those are the ways I'd check versions if I was writing the code, does anyone know of other ways they might be version checking? We're probably not regular users for the most part, running server here as our desktop environment. Lets put our heads together.

Well my mate's not having any issues and he's also running 2008R2 Standard edition.. which I setup for him so it should be the same as mine.. no idea why mine isn't working though... getting his sys info details to compare.

For those more technical minded who might find something in this... the sysinfo data for a 2008R2 Standard machine that had no issues with this update.. also has anyone tried re-installing the whole game yet?

Seeing as it worked for my mate i wondered whether I had missed something during the conversion to desktop. went to the usual site and they've released and automated converter :D

Ran this, ticked practically everything except obvious stuff that'd have no effect, now loading (no restart required I found)

Would you be willing to mention what specifically you selected? I'm not particularly computer savvy, so I'm a bit worried about just clicking things on the converter. I'm not entirely sure what is or is not going to have an effect.

Thank you very much for the fix! The game finally booted up, and now I get to wait through the long process of installing the game from scratch.

Thanks for finding this. I was able to find that the only thing that needed to be added was the "Add Xinput1_4.dll, XInput9_1_0.dll and XAudio2_8.dll" if you are running Server 2012 R2. I read up on a way to manually install those files, but would need to pull the files from a windows 7 computer. Probably something similar for the 2008 installation.

+1 here to. Windows Server 2012 R2. The above utility fixed it, not sure what did it.

Thanks Kronoman for testing to confirm. Hopefully we've found the culprit there :D

I'm suspecting that all you have to do is the XNA common controller bit.

Confirmed with me as well, this fix does work. I only installed the XNA Common Controller as suggested by _colina_ and it worked like a charm. Many thanks to Taoquitok for providing us with a workaround!

The only missing file is xinput_9_1_0.dll which can be installed from here:

Confirmed both fixes, Both seem to work. (on Server 2008 SP2) Thanks for saving me the frustration!
