Your Character is Already Logged In Woes

Please, SE, fix this! Make it so requesting to log back in disconnects our character. Make them time out after 60s of having a break in connection. Something! The time it takes our characters to log off in dungeons is currently so long, it's longer than the timer on drop chests. Disconnect while loot is being distributed? Sorry, better luck next time. I missed out on a chance to roll on the only Enbarr whistle I've ever seen this way, and it's heartbreaking.

FF14 is the only MMO I've played with this sort of reconnect issue. It's been almost a year; please do something about it.

I can't help feel you may be missing the point. Just because it's a long-standing issue doesn't mean it doesn't need to be fixed. The auto log out is currently significantly longer than the chest timer, making it impossible to lot items if you disconnect while they're being distributed, even if you're back and trying to log in long before that. Either make the chest timer longer (imo, not an ideal solution), or make trying to log back in disconnect our characters.

I wish it would not spit you back to the title screen while you attempt to reconnect but rather keep you loaded in the area and frozen until connection is reestablished.

Why don't you fix your internet instead and you wont have this problem. In all seriousness, how do you expect them to FIX this problem? You clearly know nothing about networking or how this issue even exists, so I'll just say this.

It's not going to get fixed.

If you disconnect during a synthesis you lose everything. It will also lock you out of the game for like 5-6 minutes. I wish I could have reconnected and finished the synth.
This really sucked when I had spotty internet.

I'm just going to point out that WoW has long had a system where a new connection will automatically boot any previous connection. . .

Please refrain from making assumptions about my or others' internet. Connection failure isn't why I disconnected.

I have long been playing MMOs. FF14 is the only MMO I have encountered with this particular problem. WoW isn't the only one that's found ways around it; there are numerous others to reference. I would say it is the industry standard at this point, and maintain it should be addressed in FF14.

Because this game doesn't have a longstanding issue of random and sudden 90k disconnects when your connection is flawless otherwise, or anything.

Erm, in XI you can knock people/yourself offline if you log in - which was a source of many woes due to hacking. Under normal circumstances that is. It's very unlikely they'll change that because this prevents hackers from knocking you offline immediately, so incase you know/feel you've been compromised, they can't do a thing to you while you're logged in. It takes only a few minute or less to log your character out when you disconnect.

So no it's not an issue, it's by design - They can change it sure but it was requested by people during 1.0 era to disallow being kicked off due to the hacks in XI back in the day.

90k = The error code, that's nothing special to MMORPG. The issues, which confirmed by SE and even other companies were with providers like Level3.net and Sky, not the game specifically. Also, if your net works "flawlessly" then you don't understand how it works - internet is never flawless, especially in the states and europe which has some of the oldest architecture lol.

How did I imply the internet in its entirety is flawless? I'm saying at the time of a 90k, a person's connection otherwise can be just fine.

I think everyone can agree hacking is a problem. Fortunately, it's not a prevalent issue in FF14, in no small part because of security improvements between now and the FF11 era. For those continuing to have trouble with it, there are ways other than extended auto-log to handle it.

Lunami was referring to situations where the server disconnects a character, as was so prevalent in the era before SE changed weekly reset to Tuesdays at 1am. It does still happen, but less frequently, and impacting entire groups less often. Unfortunately, it's still not uncommon to wait five, or even ten minutes for your teammate's character to log off so he can log back in.

To those who insist there's nothing wrong with this system: how would you feel if you saw a drop you had been running months trying to get, disconnected, and were unable to log back in before the chest timer expired because your character was still online?

It's not even really the d/c that annoys me. It's their atrocious system for logging back in. If I could log back in within ~10 seconds like I could on other games, I'd barely even blink at the d/c itself. Instead, I get to wait some random, arbitrary amount of time and pray that it lets me reconnect.

So, those of you claiming it's purely the internet connection? Yeah, whatever.

The 90k's are not always related to internet connection. If it were, then everyone using the same connection would potentially suffer 90k's at the same time, or at least would see lag or other connection difficulties when others on that connection were experiencing 90k's. This does not happen.

Also, what on earth is your problem with making adjustments to the log-in process to help fix this issue? They could do something as simple as require you to enter your 1-time password or something when you try to log in and it detects you're already connected.

It can be a person's local internet connection, their ISP, connection/latency (pathways, like backroads and highways and such) issues on internet backbones that cause issues staying connected to the game. Among other things.

Your idea about entering 1-time password is good, though. I wonder if they're able to implement this?

Honestly, in the time it takes to fully d/c, I could close the game entirely, re-enter my normal password, have them email me a 1-time password, and re-enter all that info, and still make it back in faster than what we have now.

Try seeing a drop you've been waiting years to get (PLD AF2 body in FFXI) only to "cast lots" and get dc'ed. Coming back to find the other PLD got it because it was gonna fall to the floor and having to wait another few months at least to get it again.

But I got over it, because eye candy isn't incredibly important to me and in the long run I'd be a lot more upset if my account got hacked and I lost everything.

This. It can often take 2-5 minutes for it to actually DC me, during which party members stumble and blink across the screen, acting out up to an entire half of a long fight, without my being able to do anything. Now add the minute+ wait for it to log your out after the drawn-out DC...

Just got DC'd on last boss in Copperbell HM for my High Level roulette...let the 3102 woes begin...
Did they kill the boss, if so did I get rewarded...or did they wipe and are waiting going on 10 minutes for my return...or did they kick me for being Offline and I just wasted my time and effort.
My girlfriend is still online on her game on another computer same network/connection...so yeah SE what's up with that.

If SE did that then anyone with your password could kick you off while you were playing the game. It needs to stay how it is for security reasons.

Post your tracert to SE's servers - Otherwise you can't disregard that it's your connection getting basically destroyed due to certain routes that numerous companies have confirmed are the issue, even with other MMOs lately.

I promise you the second they do you'll have tons of people complaining:

"You shouldn't be able to log in and kick yourself off if you're already online, it makes no sense!"

Remember how badly people wanted the AFK auto kick and how quickly it spun to people wanting to get rid of it?

When window remote Desktop tries to connect to a computer that has another user logged in, it allows the active user to reject the new connection. Why not do something like that, so if you were DCed, you can wait 30 seconds for your dead process to time out the reject request, whereas if a hacker tried it, as long as you weren't afk you could not only stop them, but perhaps flag their IP/MAC address as a hacker.

This post isn't about the disconnects, which I realize can be caused by a wide range of different problems, some of which are not related to FFXIV at all. It's about the reconnect process; something isolated entirely to the game.

Again, FFXIV is the only MMO (I personally know of) that suffers such an atrocious reconnect system. I won't claim to be a networking or programming expert with an actionable plan to resolve it, but I do know if dozens of other games can find ways much better than 5+ minute "Your Character is Already Logged In" sessions to handle it, this one can too.

To stay on point, disconnects are not always related to internet failure, and currently cause you to lose all rights to drops and group progress. If your teammate DCs during combat, it takes him so long to get back, you might as well wipe and wait. You have no hope of lotting the item you may have wanted, and you get to ping the login server an arbitrary amount of time, until finally it decides to release your character and allow you to log back in. Yes, account security is important, but how is this a good system to handle it?
