WHM vs. SCH -- What is the basic difference.

I understand that they are two different jobs and I understand that there are many minor mechanics that we could drill down tooth and nail on what one does and the other doesn't, but what is the main purpose of both and what roles should they be playing in Full Parties/ Raids? What are their responsibilities?

SCH is a great main tank / single person healer and WHM has stronger AoE heals. I think that's the biggest difference. Playstyle wise WHM is more straight forward and will usually focus on either healing or nuking depending on the phase whereas SCH will shield the group and tank(s) while keeping Shadowflare and DoTs up and is usually also responsible for raises and leeches.

A good way to look at it is that WHM is a reactive healer meaning you see people take damage you cure it all up. SCH is a proactive healer which means if people are about to take damage, you mitigate the damage.

WHM also has to play proactively, though, as they should be casting the heal before the actual damage is taken.

Definitely this. While it's true that quickly recovering the party from AoE damage spikes is a WHM strength, they also need to anticipate incoming damage to be successful. A slow, inattentive healer makes life unnecessarily difficult for their fellow healer in full party content since they can't be trusted to heal when they should.

In addition to the single target vs. AoE heal there's also a massive difference in terms of MP and aggro management. WHM have to be fairly conservative with their heals and really maximize their usage of Shroud of Saints whereas a SCH who knows how to manage their Aetherflow stacks can avoid ever dropping below 75% MP and their fairy splits aggro to make it a moot issue most of the time.

Its usually the SCH responsibility to keep up stoneskin on most fights. I know WHM get the trait that enhances the % of hp , however, we (SCHs) have MANA for days and it can drain your mp if youre not careful. The only fight ive done were the WHM is keeping up ss is levi ex. OT needs that extra 8% granite skin provides. SCH will usually embrace spam the ot to avoid the debuff.
But its all pretty much summed up with the previous post. WHM is better AoE healing and SCH single target healing. In some parties ive been asked to keep up both tanks while WHM heals DPS and chips in on tank healing when necessary.

The difference is fun and boring, all depend any on your own play style.

SCH rocks single target damage and healing. WHM rocks AoE damage and healing.

SCH has more shields and better MP/enmity management.

WHM has magic defense rolled into protect.

A lot of people will tell you Scholar is preventative healing, but that is only partially true... a WHM can do the same thing almost as well with Stoneskin as our Adlo, assuming it doesn't crit. We don't prevent massive numbers unless we crit, mostly it's making sure you keep using Succor either before something is going to hit everyone, or just keeping it up just in case people take damage.

I mainly play SCH and was doing TERRIBLE as a WHM, burning through MP because I was trying to play how I play SCH. On a Scholar, sometimes I literally just spam Physick and manually press Embrace. You don't always need to Adlo, and you can spam Physick almost non stop and never really worry about MP. I find I do this a lot more in really high spike damage fights like Ifrit Ex, where you can't quite predict him putting the debuff on the tank along with the massive damage, in the way you can with Mountain Buster and Adlo+SS the tank beforehand. If you spam Physick during Ifrit, you'll almost guaranteed get a heal off right as soon as he takes a big hit, leaving no risk if in the same situation you would wait until he took the hit and then started casting. I've tried that, and sometimes he just keeps spamming his fire breath and because you weren't preemptively curing, it's easy for a tank to die.

And that is the main difference I see in comparing SCH to WHM. Yea you will do a lot more preventative work as SCH, but that's all fairly easy. Toss out Virus either right before a big hit or large party damage like Tummults or just use it on cooldown. Use Eye for an Eye during large pulls. Use Sacred Soil basically always if you have the Aetherflow to spare. Use Fey Covenant right before usually a primal's signature attack, Levi's big wave, Ifrit's hellfire, (not sure if Titan jumping counts), and Garuda for Reckoning. That's all easy and basically second nature. The real difference in play style is I find I cure a LOT more constantly as a SCH than a WHM, sometimes regardless of whether you need to be tossing out those heals. Hell, you can do it just cause you can and don't have to worry about your MP. Every Physick+Embrace is essentially a WHM spamming Cure 2

As was said before, and is my personal opinion as well, is that SCH have more in the way of proactive rather than reactive.

SCH have to be able to see a few seconds more than a whm and act accordingly. and a stoneskin + adlo combination is way more potent as SS 18% since they stack.

And also i like that people assume we can have unlimited mana, but thats for when you are not using any lustrate or sacred soil at all. even if you drop sacred soil and you use shadowflare, still lustrate is going to be needed, especially if the party is struggling around.

Even with 6 of them (cast before entering, cd off) you might find yourself lacking in mana or even dropping bellow 25% in some cases. go on level, with an on level party in Stone Vigil. its going to challenge everything you are as a sch :)

As a WHM main, I have a question to veteran Scholars, hope I can be enlightened :)

Sacred Soil Usage for raid damage reduction, personally I feel SS should be used for Levi Ex 4 spumes + tidal roar phase, moogle Ex meteor, T9 megaflare, and T8 Allagan Field + Defensive Maneuver ONLY, as I can only think of these 4 situations where without SS, a party wipe may occur. Why bother using for any other AoE damage? With SS, medica 2 suffice, without SS, medica 2 also suffice, why waste an aetherflow stack for any other raid damage situation other than the 4 I listed above?

PS : For those with reading comprehension, I am talking about Sacred Soil Usage to reduce raid damage, not Sacred Soil Usage to provide mitigation on tanks (which I personally found to be more useful).

Any good SCH knows that lustrate>>>>>>>>sacred soil in like 99% of the cases.

A lot of the time when I get queued with a SCH they almost seem like they are not healing at all and just hanging out occasionally healing but mostly doing dps.. I chalked it up at the time that SCH have a different role to play in the fight, but after reading all of your responses I see that it's not the case..

Depends. In 8man endgame content such as Extreme Primals (excluding garuda extreme which is a joke) and coil, both binding and second you have very little room to DPS as a SCH. However, in any 4 man content, as a SCH, if you are a good one, you should be DPSing like 90% of the time. If you don't, you are not optimizing the class.

In my group, sch never uses stoneskin. Why wouldn't the whm just use it for the big incoming attacks like Ravensbeak? Other than that and some other situations (like adds incoming etc and you need to keep aggro down), you don't need a stoneskin. Plus whm ss is greater by 8pp. The sch shouldn't waste mp on a ss; save it for an adlo reapply if anything. And WHM mp isn't too big of a deal most of the time. It's about timing your heals, knowing when NOT to heal, using SoS properly, spec'ing some PIE if you need it, using procs (freecure is awesome), making use of buffs, and choosing the right spell for the right time. Oh, and trusting your fellow healer. When you get that synchronization down with the other healer and you both have an understanding of what the other will do, it's a world of difference.

One thing I've noticed is that in raid-wide damage situations, I usually take a bit more of a minimalist approach which saves some MP. Some whm's like to use a cure3 on a stacked group after heavy aoe damage. However, unless there is more damage expected shortly afterwards, a med1 or med2 may be the better approach.

In answer to this, there are a few general places I'll use SS. When Aetherflow is either almost off cooldown, or it is off cooldown and I have stacks to spare, and don't foresee any major damage incoming where I may need 4-6 Lustrates, and my MP is high enough I don't need to use Energy Drain, I'll spend one of them on SS. In Titan, it can be useful for Stomps if some people aren't full health, or say if you have two Scholars healing and the AoE numbers aren't quite high enough - any mitigation you can get there helps, but ONLY if you have stacks to spare. I find sometimes if I'm in a situation where I could use a SS, I need Lustrate even more.

An example in some pretty easy content is Garuda HM. If the tanks mess up grabbing Suparna and Chirada and they run towards the healers or dps, I'll put up a SS. Sometimes I'll put one up there anyways, because most tanks don't position them right so we always get hit by wicked wheel.


But yea, like Gallus says Lustrate is almost always better than SS if you HAVE to choose between one or the other, and are low on Aether stacks. It's just too useful of an ability. You can use it to heal while moving, to help heal while you're DPSing without exiting Cleric's, give the tank a quick pop of health if he takes spike damage - this actually saves a lot of wipes, because sometimes the tank will take massive damage while there's movement, and the time to cast Physick or Adlo is way too long to save him, let alone movement + a heal. Or it can be used to quickly top up a DPS/healer in any situation, but especially when there is raid damage coming up soon that isn't avoidable, and they may not survive.

I'd say there's a bit of a higher learning curve in 8 man content. Knowing how to manage your Aetherflow stacks is huge, for MP regen and making sure you have an Aether on hand for unforeseen damage. Knowing when to use specific cooldowns like Sacred Soil, Fey Covenant (20% magic damage reduction), Virus, Eye for an Eye, knowing when to pre-bubble a tank, knowing how to position your fairy so it won't die in some fights but is still in range to heal everyone. It's not terribly difficult, but I just tried WHM recently and found myself standing around a lot more than as SCH. I didn't really have any options other than Regen, Stoneskin, or a cure of some type.

Gallus is right about that though. Most of the time in 8 man content you don't have time to DPS, unless you have a good second healer you can trust to keep thing up for you while you do that, if you really do need the extra dps. But in 4 man content, you can usually DPS the entire time if the tank is pulling one group at a time. I've macro'd my fairy's heal to every one of my DPSing abilities and set it to focus target, so every time I do any DPS ability, it spams Embrace on the tank which is anywhere from 600 to 1200 crit, and usually it's plenty to keep them alive. If they dip to half health or under, just pop a Lustrate without exiting Cleric's Stance. All this being said, I can be pretty lazy sometimes and just hang back and heal :P

When I do Trials Roulette I frequently DPS more than heal because I find it fun and engaging (even on Titan!). If everyone is dodging properly I don't have much to do otherwise...

Thats why I said in most fights. I agree with you that WHM should be using SS to mitigate those big attacks like Death Sentence and what now. You also stated that in your group the WHM is responsible for SS so Im assuming you run with a static. I pug alot and outside of the pre fights buffs i rarely see WHM use stone skin during the fight. Not even when they know mountain buster is coming.

The only fight ive seen WHM keeping up stone skin is Levi ex cause of the debuff received when healing the ot. I'll keep using that trial as an example since ive been farming so much, and have yet to see a mirror T.T
Both healers know that we will be getting hit my whirlpool soon. WHM wont take the time/mana cost to SS. However I (SCH) can SS both healers while still healing with Eos. I also SS healers/MT and that Derp DPS thats cant dodge while Levi is doing dives. If need be can energy drain + aetherflow and boom, back to full MP.

So yea SS should be WHM for those hard hitting boss moves cause of that extra 8% mitigation. I was just saying SCH can be more liberal with our SS use. Cause of personal experience i guess i feel it should be the SCH responsibility since i dont see WHM doing it.

Again, why would you be using stoneskin instead of adlo unless maybe you just wanted to adlo->swift+stoneskin for some extra mitigation perhaps? Adlo has a chance at crit+double shield while stoneskin is percentage of max hp. Yeah, the whm shouldnt be using stoneskin too much anyways, just on some occasions. But for a sch it's just better to use adlo. and in that situation you mentioned, if you are getting stoneskin up on both of those tanks I hope you are also getting adlo on them. and in that case Im pretty sure some of that would have fallen off. It just seems a bit senseless.

and since stoneskin scales on the max hp of whoever it is cast on, there really arent a whole lot of situations where you want to spend time in battle applying stoneskin to healers and dd's. if you have that much time, DPS. Better to use succor and DPS than spend forever getting stoneskin up, usually. Or if you feel you must, just use adlo. On lower HP classes, since adlo doesnt scale on max hp, it should be worth quite a bit more, especially a crit. These arent real numbers but a 9k hp tank adlo'd for a 800 shield would be stoneskinned for 900 but a caster with 5k hp with a 800 adlo shield would have only been stoneskinned for 500. And even in the tank example if stoneskin were worth more in ehp, why use it when the difference is going to be minimal, the cast time longer, and no chance to crit for a double shield?

Yes this right here. During that part of levi i ss myself, swiftcast ss my fellow healer, then adlo myself, and then either adlo fellow healer or go back to the tank. Maybe i just get over zealous when it comes to mitigating damage. Its just so satisfying knowing that an attack that should hit u for 1k+ is doing 0 damage =P and still leaving behind part of the adlo/ss shield

As a WHM, combat Stone Skin is used sparingly only, such as for Megaflare, T7 in between 2nd phase add spawns, Ravensbeak, 5x Bahamut Claw, Death Sentence, Titan Ex 3 stack Mountain Buster etc, AKA attacks that has a chance of outright killing your tank/raid team.
Other than that, any other mitigation by use of Stone Skin is MP inefficient, why SS when I can heal the tank back up to full easily? SS costs 266 MP, same as a Cure II, double of Cure I, sure it makes you feel like a badass when you see the mountain buster barely nudge the tank's HP bar, but I can also feel like a badass when the tank's HP drop to 60~70%, then go back up immediately within 0.5 second because I timed my heal nicely :).

TBH this statement only valid between experienced players.
Many times in PUG when the MT died, the SCH said "i dont have big heal spell, not my fault (looking at the WHM)" ^^;

That is actually quite true. We don't have a massive heal like Cure 2 with Divine Seal. Our Physick + Embrace does equal a Cure 2, but sometimes Eos decides to heal somebody else, even if you're manually spamming it on the tank. Where Scholars excel is keeping the tank at high health with consistent heals over a long period of time. We can spam Physick+Embrace, or Adlo to prevent damage then heal him up. If we're lucky and nothing goes wrong, the tank shouldn't spike down to 1/5th HP. We do have Lustrate, but if your Aether is blown and its still on cooldown, you're kinda screwed.

In general I'd say it's the WHMs job to keep regen up, Stoneskin before big hits, keep the party healed up with Medica 2, cure the party after massive raid wide damage like Titan's jumps or what ever, and help out on the tanks when they spike to very low health. Sounds like a lot, but Scholars are doing it all as well but with different abilities.

RIght, but I do feel like the fights often are designed specifically with a whm/sch pairing in mind. plenty of raid-wide damage and tank killing moves but with enough time in-between that with proper lustrate management means sch usually can have those big heals handy. It's all about knowing the fight/ the pace. And not being afraid to blow a Lustrate when it's time but knowing when it ISN'T time as well. SCH really do excel at tank healing by keeping them up and shielded and lustrating when they get too far down.

A bad sch is made by:
improper fairy management
improper aetherflow management
little or inconsistent use of adlo
spamming adlo til oom instead of weaving in physics and lustrates
improper use of other cd's

A bad whm is made by:
cure2/cure3 spammers - not using enough cure1 for freecure procs
inconsistent or nonexistent regens
poor timing for heals (many times you need to precast in prep for incoming damage)
poor use of cd's
overall terrible mp management

SCHs main tank healing is from adlo/physic weaving + properly managed fairy
WHM main tank healing is from regen + cure1 + freecure procs

SCHs main raid healing comes from preventative succor/ top-off succor with a possible sacred soil if not needed for a lustrate, but timing is even more important for that move. With Eos, they can use her aoe regen as well, but most SCH will be using Selene
WHM main raid healing comes from medica 1/ medica 2 depending on the situation. Under some conditions, a cure3 is great as well but shouldn't be the go-to raid heal due to its cost and radius. (a med1/2 is much better in many cases if people are spread out a little more and are more likely to also hit the tank where cure3 might not)

SCH have lustrate for healing up from low hp and its great for immediate relief after heavy hitting moves, plus adlo is great for preventing some damage from heavy hits anyways, and it's part of their main healing "rotation"
WHM have their potency cd/ spell speed cd and/or regen+cure2 for low hp tanks, and benediction which can usually only be used 1-2 times in a fight. For certain moves, stoneskin is important before a hit

SCHs manage hate automatically since they split potency with their fairy. Additionally, the shield portion of adlo I believe doesn't generate hate or very little.
WHMs manage hate through paced healing and SoS.

SCHs manage MP through weaving in physics and adlos properly, using lustrate properly, managing their fairy, and managing aetherflow, and of course timing/pacing
WHM manage MP more through timing/pacing, sticking with regen+cure1 as much as possible except for using that freecure proc. Good management of SoS is also extremely important. But it is more beneficial for the whm to spec PIE than the sch.

SCH dps is great for boss-type encounters. They can put up DoTs in clerics, and lustrate isnt affected by stance changes, neither is the fairy. fairy + whm + emergency lustrates are enough for many phases of boss mechanics for a good while. Additionally, bane works well for smaller pulls in dungeons. Still, have to be careful on timing with cleric's stance.
WHM dps is more lackluster for single-target; however, they excel at aoe damage. Holy does not have a target limit like bane does as well, so it works really well on very large pulls while also providing a bit of cc. However, Regen needs to be put up possibly with divine seal before-hand because benediction and stoneskin are the only moves really that arent affected by the stance change. So you have to be extra careful on the timing.

Both healers need to be using virus and eye for an eye appropriately and without accidentally both using it at the same time, so takes some coordination there. These skills are great in many situations and should not be neglected! But be careful because SCH virus has a little more utility, so in some spots they should definitely get priority on that move.

Raising - the general order for who does raises is SMN->SCH->WHM but it doesnt have to be that way. If a WHM is doing well on MP they can raise just as easily. My group often does it with that priority but also based on who has swiftcast up. Interestingly, if none have swiftcast up, the whm could try to use the spellspeed buff and then cast it for a faster raise.

Remember, for SCH, fairy management is about placement and targeting. and although in some cases you can use them somewhat interchangeably, aetherflow for mp is NOT the same as SoS for mp. So if you swap classes, you need to think of them a little differently:

Aetherflow is for mp management as well as Lustrate charge management (also sacred soil and energy drain, but Lustrates are more useful in a lot of situations since its instant off-GCD mega healing). Aetherflow is available very quickly (1 min recast timer?) and the mp gained is instant.
SoS is for mp management as well as hate management. Try to save it for the mp if you can!! But it can be good to blow simply for emergency hate issues. I try to save it til I need it for mp, and sometimes I will be in the yellow or orange before I get to that, but it only matters in the end if you take hate and get hit. Just watch for that. Also, it has a longer cooldown (2 min. maybe? I can't remember off the top of my head) and it is an mp regen not instant mp.

Keep in mind that while physic+embrace is about as powerful as a cure2 at the price of a cure1, the fairy can't embrace at the same rate as the sch's physics (it is slower). WHMs also have regen which people tend to forget to include in that. Regen should be up on a tank most all the time. And don't forget you can divine seal + regen for a really nice hp regen.

And most importantly for both classes -- trust the other healer! If you can't trust the other healer, you need to find a new one. or improve yourself (as maybe the actual case is the other healer can't trust you!). Healers work best if they are really in-sync with the fight's pacing etc. and also with each other. Knowing what the other healer is going to do helps you know what you need to do, so it may take a little time getting used to each other while also getting used to the fights. But it can really work well!

I have never had Eos heal someone other than the person I've targetted, and SCH can bust out WAY higher numbers than a WHM ever could for ST, both over the length of a fight, and in a single GCD. Lustrate/Physick/RousedEmbrace absolutely decimates WHM in ST healing. If you're using more Lustrates than you have aetherflow charges... IDK what to tell you, sounds like the tank isn't doing his job right.

There is no way for a WHM to compare to a SCH's single target. Period.

Or the other healer!! My SCH buddy sometimes swaps over to tank when we try to form a farming party for primals/T5. The number of bad WHM/SCH out there is astounding. Just the other night, I had one scoff at me for my HPS. Nevermind my good heal timing. Nevermind the fact that they almost never used adlo, let the tank die before lustrating at 3 aetherflow stacks, didnt seem to know what a cooldown was... they wanted me to cure3 both stacks during fireballs and conflags because... yeah thats needed at 15% echo buff... And they whined about my HPS like that is an important stat at all (not sure they'd ever beaten T5 actually). And a lot of whm's I see don't pace themselves/use SoS right/wtf is freecure? and so they go oom pretty fast or even pull hate depending. So yeah, anyways, if the sch is out of lustrates, it may be anyone's fault really.

Not only should the SCH have precast Succor in anticipation of the Fireball to take some of the edge off, you have plenty of time to recover from Fireball hits since that's the ONLY damage anyone should be taking in that phase aside from the tank and whoever is slow-roasting inside of a Conflagration. It makes me very nervous when a WHM is visibly running out of mana and Conflags aren't even done yet, and overreacting to the Fireball damage is probably a big reason why that happens.

Sorry about your T5 experience. It's ridiculous to expect that the WHM is going to bust out Cure III just for Fireballs. Not only should the SCH have precast Succor in anticipation of the Fireball to take some of the edge off, you have plenty of time to recover from Fireball hits since that's the ONLY damage anyone should be taking in that phase aside from the tank and whoever is slow-roasting inside of a Conflagration. It makes me very nervous when a WHM is visibly running out of mana and Conflags aren't even done yet, and overreacting to the Fireball damage is probably a big reason why that happens.

Yeah, I think healers need to calm down a little bit :D massive damage is no problem. If no one dies, its really easy to heal up. Also, I think I will use "slow roasting inside of a Conflagration" from now on XD

As a WHM, I'm a healer that can do some damage.

As a SCH, I can do alot of stuff, including heal.

SCH feels more like support to me. It's the lazy mans heal, but you get to do other things. I love them both, but really.....you don't realize how much that little fairy heals for you until you don't have her.

It's hard to really grasp it until you play them yourself, but they are different enough to warrant two classes.

SCH has to manage more skills + pet and pet skills. Has tons more options and he's clearly superior in single target healing.

WHM has less skills to use but he has to manage them well, being more MP limited than the SCH.

There's no better healer, it depends on your playstyle. Personally I fell great playing sch, and I woulnd't like playing whm the same.

When has anything ever been so serious you needed all that ST healing? It's almost like saying "SCH can eat more hotdogs than WHM" With PoM, Divine Seal on both Regens cast preemptively, and Cure2 spam is more than enough healing to surpass a SCH in a 15 sec window of healing spam(Benediction for OH SNAP moments). Yea I know you said throught the whole fight, but what good does it do SCH to be the better ST healer? It's not like WHM is flawed at it by any means so bringing it up is pointless. It's not like when comparing AoE heals. Now there's a no brainer.

Oh yea when ever I get ko'ed while I'm a Scholar I aerherflow. Quick cast my fairy all the time. I never heal my self or any else until Eos I'd up. I only use eos when I get ko'ed.

This is pretty much how I play scholar. Spam physik and embrace and use adlo when necessary such as raven's beak/blight on turn 9. Burst healing with lustrate only comes into play on certain phases of certain fights (ie raven's claw turn 9 or single tanking turn 8 when the dread is out).

SCH in no way is a "Lazy man's healer." It's just different management. You are basically controlling two healers at a time, if done right. If not done right, like running /autofollow afk, then yes, it's lazy. But when I play, it can get pretty hectic. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong.
