Novus Weapon Cost

I think that there must be Gil sellers on the board of Square-Enix because I can't understand the logic of this quest otherwise. The need to acquire Alexandrite is sufficient to pace the acquisition of a Novus weapon. The additional requirement to meld 75 pieces of materia (equal parts I, II, III and IV) is absurd.

I'm gathering up all the mats that I need before I do my first meld. I've already spent over $2M gil and figure it will cost $4M before I'm done. I've been doing this by selling other materia that I get through Spirit Bonding.

I'm sure, though, that the more impatient types out there will simply buy gil to get the materia needed. According to this helpful tell I just got (which SE seems incapable of repressing), my $4M gil would only cost $28.

Seems to me that this part of the quest is a great big present to all the gil sellers.

Or a great big present to DPS queuing for expert and high level roulettes so that you will queue up as a PLD in spirit bonding gear so they can do their run.

You don't have to buy a single Materia, unless you don't want to SB them yourself, don't send out Retainers on Ventures and only if you want it done asap. If people are impatient, good for me so i make more Gil out of the Materia i create. But to blame this on SE, for being impatient ? Idk man.. seems pathetic.

And RMT's are really never a Problem, the people who buy Gil are the problem. Without buying gil, RMT's hardly would exist.

I'm not SB'ing direct to the materia I need because the results are too random (elemental materia). The SB materia that I create is 100% in high demand - I use the proceeds to buy the ones that I need for Novus.

And yes, I blame SE for creating an environment that encourages gil buying while doing little to stop the practice.

You are insane. The time it would take to spiritbond and convert the correct tiers of 75 materia would take more than the rest of the entire Atma/Animus quest line put together.

If you only SB 1 piece a day and are really unlucky with converting, then yes. If you do like 2-3 Sets a day, which does not really take long, i don't really see how it would take more than the "entire Atma/Animus". Well those stages took a couple days for certain people.. you mean "that long"?

You don't need to meld anything until you get your 75 alexandrites, so you can do all your spiritbonding in how everlong it takes you to do that. If you know what kinds of materias you want for your weapon, you can sell the ones you don't need, for elemental materias and stat materias you might not want, you can either meld those to gears to increase spiritbonding speed or you can try your luck at transmuting in hopes of either getting what you are after or something that sells well. Once you get all you alexandrites, just get all your gils and materias you have amassed sit in front of the market board and infuse what you have, buy what you don't. Materia is random when you get it, but just because it isn't what you are after, doesn't mean it can't be useful in getting you what you are.

I've been getting a lot of shit for going into roulettes with gear I want to spiritbind. Honestly speaking it's by far the fastest way, so if you run into a spiritbinder don't give them shit, they're doing what the most efficient thing they can do. Blame SE if you dislike it.

Just form SB groups it really doesn't take long. Figure out which pieces of gear give you the best chance of the materia you need and go from there. This is more open world content that people want, more content that gets people out playing together I think it's fine.

Even if you and your group go out and farm all the mats and craft together I imagine it could go pretty quick if you wanna put the time in. I'm not on the Novus yet but I've been SB while I get there and already have a ton of materia I need for my melds.

People still think this you should get everything right away without any effort.

Between getting 75 alexadite and what not. I may have mine finished buy 2.4x and I'm ok with that.


Also as long as your are melding gear, even if you don't get the one you want, Sell it and get the one you do want. unless it's a elemental one then you are just out of luck.

Each item converted has a 1 in 18 chance of giving the correct type materia of which you need 8 different types which leads you to have an 44% chance at getting one of the correct materia per gear converted. Mind you that 44% will diminish by 5.52% for each complete tier of materia until you are on your last remaining required materia at a pathetic 5.52% chance. You need to obtain 75 materia.
I'm not going to sit here and do the math to figure out how many conversions it would take to on average get a full set of materia for Novus but as you can see, the number is staggering.
As I said, doing it all yourself is insane and will overshadow the rest of the entire quest line in terms of time spent.

Edit: Oh yeah, and let's not forget the failed melds that will happen which you need to obtain those specific materia again.

I'm taking this quest line slowly and I'm happy with my slow and easy progress now that I've passed the ridiculous Atma portion. But I do get irritated by the false information that it's "easy" or that it "doesn't take that long" comments in regards to obtaining materia. Buying them is just a reality because it's unrealistic for even most NEET players to obtain in a timely manner.

That is some weird Math there.. 1 out of 72? Kind of made up, since not every piece of gear can be converted into every kind/tier of materia. So recheck some of the Basics, before you present some percentual value's, then we can continue. At that point it may does not look as insane to you anymore, as it may does right now.

Oh and yea, what the other people said also; if it is not the correct one, you can sell it and buy the one you need in exchange. Not really that hard.

The odds are better than that, like battle gear won't give crafting or gathering materias, plus the item level of the gear also determines the grade of materia you get, and the type of battle gear you are assimilating can rule out some materias as well, like DoW robes shouldn't be giving materias like quickarm. Depending on the level it is at worst 1 in 36 and gets a bit better when you have DoW or DoM only gears.

How many spiritbinding pieces were you wearing? I saw a tank the other day in my Expert run for the day who was literally 90-100% stacked in spiritbinding gear. I sat at the entrance and told him I'd patiently wait until he changed to a decent set for us to run the dungeon and after pulling and not getting healed I assume he got pissed and left. If someone replaces one or two slots with gear to bind on runs I'm sure no one would have a problem with it, but a whole set? It's the same thing as if you had a new player coming in with mostly Wanderer's Palace or Amdapor Keep ilvl gear.
Like you said, it's the fastest way. I just go ahead and do it just on FATEs because idk, I feel bad knowing I'm slowing others down. That and also while binding on FATEs I can choco exp and have a (super massively low) chance at Alexandrites.

Not made up but admittedly a slight oversight of a hastily written reply. It is now corrected in my post. Unfortunately I lack the proper data to make proper numbers but following the formula even a 1 in 18 would take a very time consuming amount of time, which would still overshadow the time spent on the rest of the quest to get to that point.

I thought open world (fates in Northern Thanalan or other places with lots of mobs) was the fastest way. I'm curious tho, why not use PF and spam one specific dungeon?

i don't have done that yet but i really think you have to keep ilv 1 and 2 materia on the scroll same if it with 50% or even 25% rate succes , because with one ilv4 materia(200/300k) i can buy so many lv 1and 2 so at the end i hope not have to buy any lv 4 matéria. Is anybody think same?

HQ gear can also speed up the SB process and you can also equip bracelets that increase your spirit bond rate. I can agree that doing this solo will probably be enough to drive people mad but in a group it shouldn't be that hard to handle. Buying the materia will always be faster but really i don't see the point of finishing Novus so fast as the next phase probably isn't gonna be for awhile anyways.

And I guess you don't realize that by keeping the gil prices up on the materia you sell, YOU are encouraging people to buy gil.
If there was no way of buying gil, there'd be no way you'd be able to charge the prices you do today.

HQ gear melded with materia you don't need (elemental resist) + Spiritbond potion + gear that increase spiritbond + FATE party in Northern Thanalan == plenty of materia and chance of Alexandrites.

If anyone is to blame for people buying gil, it should be the people buying the gil, not the people taking advantage of the one's that are breaking the rules.

You have to remember this quest is a Marathon not a Sprint, and more tailored to those who do not have the time to do higher-end content with an FC/LS. Think about it logically, for those that are doing The Second Coil right now you will get a better upgrade from Turn 4 (or 9). It's a faster more efficient way of grinding once you learn the fights and are able to farm them. Yes it may not have the stats you want, but more often then not people will have their main stat upgraded along with the weapon damage, which typically trumps any other stat you may have wanted from a lower level weapon.

In all honesty let's face it, the current Coil content is far easier to learn and farm then going through the hassle of upgrading your Relic weapon. Not that the Relic Weapon quest is hard, it's just mind boringly tedious. You will either be spending most of your nights Fate/Spiritbond Grinding, or wasting all of your hard earned gil on the materia you do need to upgrade your Relic Quest.

Personally for me, it's not worth it. I will have my Yagrush (upgraded Weathered Yagrush) very soon, and while the upgraded Relic will have better stats, it's not worth the time, effort, or gil for me to worry about. Will I eventually complete the quest? Sure, but sadly by the time I do complete the quest, I will already have the ilvl 115 weapon from Second Coil, and be awaiting for the next patch to bring out new content. Smarter thing probably would have been to grind for the Relic quest on my secondary class I play most often which is my Paladin, but alas, hindsight is 20/20.

I very highly doubt that anyone is expected to spiritbind for all 75 of the Materia they wish to use for their Novus. The economy exists for a reason.

So, what's the idea here? Obviously, it's to spiritbind things. If you get a Materia you're looking to infuse, great! Stockpile it. If you get an infusable Materia that you don't plan to use, okay! Sell it. If you get an uninfusable, hope it's selling well and toss it up there. Whenever you have five of the useless Materia, attempt to transfuse it into a new Materia. It's another chance of getting something useful. Alternately(I don't know the market well enough to quantify this), the elemental materia might have actually gone up in price lately due to being able to bind materia to a piece of gear to hasten spiritbinding speed.

In theory, sufficient unluckiness with spiritbinding will give you enough money to just buy the materia you couldn't get. Meanwhile, you're providing others with the means of doing the same.

Something Else Worth Noting

Going all the way up through Tier IV Materia to completely max a stat is completely optional. If you're really strapped for cash, skip them and invest in an additional stat. If you're only slightly strapped for cash, infuse Tier IV's until the infusion chance is no longer 100%. Losing 7-11 off of your favorite stat will not be the end of the world; secondary stats hardly matter and they are especially negligible on weapons, where Weapon Damage trumps all other stats by such a huge margin. Besides, is there really a huge difference between 44/31 and 38/37, for instance? It would probably be the same number of infused IV's, but more, if not all, of them would be 100%. Investing in 3 stats might actually be beneficial for some classes as well, and that would make it effortless to avoid IV's.

Yes, if you did it all yourself, but I think what most are doing is selling the types they don't need and using that gil to buy the ones they do.

I haven't run into anyone like you in dungeons yet, but a couple FC-mates have and they were both fail runs due to the spirit tank that couldn't hold aggro or survive the big pulls they insisted on doing.

I spirit bond mainly while doing beast dailies (also grabbing any fates I find hoping for an Alexandrite drop, though they remain as ellusive as snarks).

I make 300k+ a day crafting. I'll just buy my materia as I need them. It's going to be all right :)

Was it that tank that insisted on big pulls or your FC-mates?
If FC-mates, they're the ones at fault for the wipes.
While I hate spiritbonders in duties myself, I don't say anything as long as they do their job.

They could have ended up with a tank that barely was able to enter iLevel wise too. Such a tank wouldn't hold aggro against dps that vastly outgear the tank in that case, which means the dps have to learn to hold back when necessary too.

I love it when people make my arguments for me. I sell at the market rate and use the gil to buy materia that I need at market rate. The demand is created by the design of the quest. Most people on this thread are giving great advice on SB'ing - I mention that I also SB for the quest.

Like it or not, a side effect is more gil selling for those that don't want to take the legitimate path.

There was demand for materia even before the quest.
I just pointed out that while you complain about gilsellers, you yourself help feed the gilseller/buyer market.

I had tons of materia from leveling my alt classes and changing their equips as soon as they spiritbond and not relying on unconvertible green gear from dungeons...

I have a crapload of Materia with my retainer, enough for 2 Novus with any stat.

So I don't think this is the worst system in game. It's way better than Atma stones and books which required cursed FATEs.

The tanks were the ones that insisted on macho pulls, trying to play as if they were wearing their ilvl100 sets. They were nasty arrogant tanks who eventually rage quit calling the rest of the party a bunch of stoopid noobs. Granted, they were not likely representative of spirit-bonding tanks in general.

EDIT: I personally am annoyed by spirit bonders who like to do their thing through DF (talking full sets, not a piece here or there). Doing SB groups through PF or with FC/LS mates seems more considerate). But again, to me this is hypothetical as I haven't actually encountered it since CT days.

i remember there used to be this complaint on the forums... that gil in this game was pointless.

there also used to be a complaint that materia was pointless too, beyond the three needed for each relic weapon.

SE just gave gil and materia a greater purpose and made it important.

The heart of the problem is that the spiritbonding system sucks. A gear based game that encourages you to wear crappy gear for something repetitive like farming (not for an achievement or trial), is bad. Other games (particularly ones you run around farming hordes of demons from a top down view...) have already learned this lesson.

It's worse when the game is encouraging you to wear crappy gear in a group setting since gimping yourself will effect others. This is especially true when the wearing of that gear is purely for personal gain (spiritbonding your own materia) and has no benefit for the group.

I find it really strange that SE refuses to make the very well designed crafting and gathering systems effect core game play (beyond the singular crafting of a component of a relic weapon, that isn't required to be HQ so just about anyone can do it once they hit 50) for fear it will encourage RMT sales. However, they're willing to throw in this massive dependence on their horrible spiritbonding system, which is no less prone to encouraging RMT sales.

With that said, I'm going to go the cheap route and not use any Tier IV materia. You can put more than 2 stat types into the novus weapon, so I'll be splitting the stats on my Bravura between Parry, Acc and Det. Never putting enough into a single stat to need the Tier IVs.

Seemed like it was quite a problem that there wasn't any reason for lower level materia or even a lot of max level materia for a long while, and now there is, and it's creating a market for materials and gear for just spiritbonding.

This all seems like a great way of getting gil moving around.

On estimation
Cost : Scroll + Ink = 1500myths

Alexandite Map
Shop - 800myth each - Total 60,000myths
Dude - FOC - limited 1 per day.
Materia - 75 pieces X Gil

Hence: if 2hrs game time only per day,
FOC : 7/week + Purchase : 2/week = Total 8.3wks(58 days) for 75 pieces

they finally put in place a system which values gil and .... people complain because you need gil in order to progress.

SE do us a favour, take gil out of the game already!
