What is the reason behind Facial Expression emotes not being Persistent?

I have been asking this through various posts during this year, and can't say I've ever received an actual answer, so I figured I'd make a specific thread for this.

I clearly was not the only one to ask for facial emotes to be made permanent (or as the developers have baptized the sitting/dancing emotes, "Persistent"), but even after the introduction of wonderful static stances such as /changepose, the facial emotes were left brief and temporary.

I'd just like to know why, what makes it difficult to implement persistence to facial emotes, and if are the Developers considering to modify their lasting time sometime in the future?

Hmmm, I don't see how. The /straightface facial emote would bring your character back to the idle facial expression, so that prevents getting stuck on a certain facial emote.

I can see a case for making them last longer, or letting us toggle their length (/smile 10, for 10 seconds or something), but persistent would just be creepy. Anyone who maintains a solid smile for longer than a minute is an unholy abomination and should be treated as such.

Right, but often times, to just so quickly return to a statue-like emotionless face can result in much creepier situations. This picture here would've looked a lot more natural if after the emote the character had a smiling expression as his "idle" facial emote.

Wow, I'm glad im not the only one who wonders this. It would go a long way for rping or just to give your character some "character" lol. I'd like to go around with the /taunt face on. Love my characters taunt smile. looks devilish like he is up to something lol. Hope devs forward this on. would be nice to haver persisting

I'd love to look angry all the time. I mean, I'm a highlander, damn it. My homeland got violated by the Garleans and those who aren't kissing their asses are squatting in a damn cave or working the streets of Ul'dah.

This made me laugh because I thought about how this would look creepy irl :D

But...I also respect the point of view of wanting the expression to last longer. I can picture a situation where we could have a happy expression for 2-3 minutes.

I am like a thousand other FFXIVers (or any MMORPGers for that matter). I am a guy playing a female character. I enjoy looking at an attractive female character. I would much prefer a smile or grin as her static look as Neshendra looks waaaay too serious. Just saying. :)

If you change your pose while you have a weapon out, some affect your facial emotes for as long as you're in that pose. Some examples are the whm and pld

Yes, but those are just specific expressions that the devs added to the pose. If you try to use any other expression (for example, I don't like the smile on conjurer's pose.), it will again last only a few seconds, and then bring you to /straightface again (even if your weapon is still out).

If it were possible, and I saw someone with a permanent facial expression other than the default one I would assume they suffered a stroke.

And yet, there are many faces whose default /straightface expression is a smiling one (Miqo'te female comes to mind, only Face 4 is neutral).

There's a difference in having your lip corners curl a slight bit into a smile and having almond/smiley/happy eye shape naturally VS pulling muscles into a smile (or in other words - making the current facial expressions permanent).

Just like IRL some people have, for example more closed eyelids/sleepy eyes than others (naturally) VS slightly squinting (making an expression). That's the difference I'm talking about but, that's the subtle things which should have been implemented in the severely lacking char creator. I know I get hung up on such things more than an average person.... Just can't help but notice :|

I'd love them to make the /shuteyes expression persistent.
My kitty likes to close her eyes when idly sitting around.

Or people shouldn't assume familiarity with colloquialisms that are intrinsically American.

I made macros that do this for me. example: /worried motion <wait.5> for every single line. It isn't perma but it gets the job done.

Yeah and it spams the emote every 5 seconds, unless you manually disable the chat message first.
Unless you can activate and deactivate that option via macro as well. That would be neat.

That's what putting "motion" after the emote does. Keeps it out of the chat log.

Wouldn't make for a very good .gif, though. This is probably the best thing to come out of 1.0.

I like the idea but I guess I was pretty successful for making my character look unamused almost all the time :P :

Would be great if it would also apply during cutscenes as well, can just imagine going into an extremely serious cut scene with an overly happy look on my character's face or go through a celebration looking very pissed for no reason. Would be a gold mine!

I would rather them keep the facial emotes the way they are, but instead have a new category of "mood" emotes that sets your face to a static look (until you deactivate it or another emote overrides it).

Mood examples:
Happy
Sad
Tired
Gloomy
Angry
Resting (a static eyes closed)
Frustrated
Delighted

I was just thinking.. it would be awesome if our characters could have "moods."

So say if you set your mood to sad your character would frown, do the /disappointed emote, sigh, or cry at regular intervals.

Something like that could be really cool for RP and just in general bringing more life to our characters.
