Really wish they would just leave marriage out of the game
Hey, I'd rather not deal with it too, but my girlfriend will obviously pressure me into it when the patch hits.
My dillemma is that I'm playing a female character, and have no intention of permanently changing into a male character.
SE has not released any details regarding marriage yet, but it is rumored to be included in Patch 2.4.
Well with the shitstorm in every thread about marriage, I would have to agree with many others that SE's best option is probably to just keep marriage out of the game. It would be nice to have, but not worth the headache.
I could care less if they have gay marriage or not honestly. As I said I see no reason for marriage at all. This is a game and most people only make time for doing things in game like raids, missions and quests. When do you honestly have time to make a personal enough connection to want to marry another player? If you say well we are together in real life then sack up and get married in real life, if you're already married in real life great, but this is a game leave it as one and keep the extra drama away from it.
This is an incredibly valid question. Especially since it appears that marriage is slated for release sometime around 2.4, and Fantasia Potions are rumored to be being added to the Mog Station Optional Services Shop sometime this or next month. So since it is clearly confirmed that Fantasia Potions are going to be available to mass purchase, and even if they are not, since they are available as a one time perk to everyone who has had a subscription for, what is it? 60 days? Then the question really should be asked, what is stopping someone from creating a Male character with a female name, getting that character married to a female character, and then using their Fantasia to change said characters gender to Female once the marriage is in effect? Will the Marriage be invalidated upon the use of a Fantasia?
Way to suck the fun out of the marriage mechanics of various other games.
So long as the Marriage Mechanic doesn't include Shared Inventory Space then everything is fine and dandy.
Im going to assume that the rings will be gender locked. So a male character for example could marry then use fantasia to change to female and wouldnt be able to equip the ring anymore. Whether the couple are still married or not is another matter, being that we've only heard that dropping the ring will divorce you. Could be entirely possible that the only thing that signifies you as being married is having that ring and it's simply a unique item which is what keeps you from marrying again. We dont know anything else about the marriage system beyond that but I doubt there will be any kind of perks. Maybe marrying/attending a wedding will give you an achievement for the chocobo or something, or it could be its own thing.
Its entirely possible they might do the system like in XI too. Technically they didnt have same-sex marriage in that game either, but you were still able to get the rings and buy all the wedding items and set up your own player-made wedding, you just didnt get the GM running it. Who knows, they might allow the fantasia switch then a trade in for the ring to get a gender appropriate one as a workaround for it.
There's people who want the game to have a marriage system. FF11 had it, so why take away the fun from the rest of the players? It's called role play. The game is not solely raids, missions and quests... that would be boring. I don't agree that SE should just take it away because people are complaining about the same sex marriage thing. It's just as easy as switching races. If you don't love that person enough that you are not willing to sacrifice your character's gender, then... why are you getting married in the first place?
@OP they will probably introduce a way like they did in FF11 some time after the official weddings with GM, where you could take the ring and wedding attire from a chest and exchange it. People worked around this way to be able to equip the ring with their significant other's name without having to be of opposite sex. This could be a good solution, actually.
I think everyone is forgetting something purely simple:
If SE puts in Marriages and you don't like it? You really truly don't have to "touch" it. Avoid it and let the other players have their fun.
SE is surely aware that peole might use fantasia to get around the marriage restriction. It's likely that once u change sex your marriage is "erased" and the ring linked to it will just disappear...
Probably no shared inventory space. However, if you get divorced you need to pay a fixed amount per month to the lower income person until they get remarried.Quote:

If Marriage ends up being like FFXI (which would be the best way). There is very large cost to get married in game.
In the end you end up with a ring for the male and female.
It had no stats or use, provided no benefits other than the fact that it stated who it was aligned with.
There were no perks, no special benefits other than the ceremony itself and the fireworks you could purchase.
Since there are no bazaars, you would have to glamour it or wear it in order to display it.
Most likely if a sex was changed, the ring would just be inaccessible, it may not be in the gender swappable gear coming soon. This is an in game marriage system between a couple of people. I don't see why the vocal minority is making such a big deal out of it. The only storm I am seeing caused is by a select few in the vocal minority. Just let it continue as it is see how it goes and understand there probably will not be any perks assuming they follow typical SE history.
Several years ago when IRL same sex marriage was a discussion. I was of the attitude of if you want to get married do so, I don't see any reason to stop them.
Over time though it has been so shoved down my throat including this game, i am starting to just want the idea of same sex marriage to go away.
These vocal minority groups that continuously work to jam this down our throat is driving the supporters or indifferent to want to ban any support for it just to make it go away. The 1 million threads anytime any discussion about it comes up, with regards to the subject is getting annoying and causing my support to wane.
SE has stated at this time it be male/female only. It may be considered in the future who knows. However if it is continuously pushed like this all the time then I would rather it just remain male/female out of spite if nothing else.
I doubt this will end I don't even know why I replied to this thread but consider this my last on the subject, I will just skip over them in the future and if asked to vote, may vote based on how annoying all these threads are becoming.
Wow... just wow!
Allow me to translate what you just said: "Don't talk about it & MAYBE you'll get what you want eventually. More importantly, don't annoy me with your requests or I'll vote against them out of spite, rather than on the merits of fairness & equality."
I'm honestly annoyed at how many people don't want marriage in-game. If you don't like it, please just ignore the feature. I'm a gay rights activist, and I completely understand where Square is coming from and their decisions. I also feel it's a probability that they'll add ssm but in a later patch, but obviously that's speculation.
My girlfriend of 5 years and I are genuinely excited for this feature. Sure it's fantasy, but it's a type of immersion that'll retain a great deal of memories after we both quit. A.k.a, what a game should be doing for you in the long run. Please, SE, don't listen to the vocal (forum) minority*.
Edit: *I figured I should clarify -- minority who doesn't want in-game marriage period, NOT those who want ssm.
Way to "paraphrase". He never said to not talk about it. He said he's tired of the dozens (and I'm being generous with dozens) of threads that have been created with nothing but crying about it.
Have you ever watched several videos on Youtube in the same day? Don't you hate it when the same commercial is shoved down your throat every single freaking video you watch? Same thing here. Just look at the threads right now, there's like 3 threads about this. The normal way would be to head over to the SUGGESTIONS part of the forum and formulate a nicely put letter with why you think it would be good to consider your approach. Then maybe, create 1 <--- thread in here asking people that share your view to do the same. Instead? A bunch of tantrums, each creating a thread for attention. It is what it is.
lolwat... If someone wanna keep their gender in a video game it means they don't love their couple enough? XD
Also pretty sure that SE going to allow fantasia "glitching" SSM, because that'd bring them more $$$$. Just like they're not in a hurry with name changes cause they rather people transfer x2 to change their names XP
Good thing for SE this community is ready to pay extra for anything with "Square Enix" stamp on it lol
What is amazing to me is EVERYONE is perfectly OK with virtual transsexualism... but virtual same-sex marriage? No, that somehow crosses the line.
/smh
I read them. However I wouldn't consider those people being OK with "virtual transexualism". There've been threads about why guys play female chars and most answers are things like "I don't want to stare at a guys back all day" and the sort. Nothing remotely close to what you claim. My main character in Street Fighter is Rose, in Mortal Kombat is Kitana. Does it also say I'm OK with that? To be honest, I didn't quite understand your last post (#24). I don't know if this answers it correctly.
I really hate the 'if I cant have it nobody can' attitude a lot of people have. I don't like pvp but its a feature in the game and I don't think it should not exist. I dont have the chance to do coil turn 2 because I dont know any groups that match my appropriate time that can do it, but I dont think it should not exist just because I can't take part.
I'm pretty sure SE will just quietly add a workaround for people to have ssm just like in XI, that way people get what they want, and it wont cause a big drama among the people that dont like it (despite what some people on these forums claim, yes it exists). Its a fake wedding and all you get out of it is a ring and an outfit. Go ahead and make your own wedding if you want and just play pretend with a little more creativity. Thats what my husband and I did in XI when we both played female characters.
I shudder mainly at the potential for what happened in ffxi; players who would fulltime their wedding rings in group content.
I said in another thread, and I'll put it here, imo the best "implementation" of a wedding anything I think, would be to just make the dress/tux/rings a 3-star crafting rec for vanity purposes, and everyone just role-play the "wedding" with their friends in attendance. This way, everyone is included, everyone is happy, no one can feel left out or not validated, and we get some pretty glamour gears!
Ive personally wondered about this myself.
I'd like to be able to do this with my friend for the hell of it, but we're both playing male miqos at the moment. And knowing him- seeing as I'm the one who's a girl in RL- would most likely be the one who'd have to change gender (ugh) for this to work.
If a Mod or GM could respond on this matter and atleast hint that the rings wont be gender locked (like the lightning hairstyle), so I can stock up on phantasias.
Because I have no intentions of permanently staying a fem in this game (seeing as all the fems here as horribly FUGLY, with lalas just barely looking cute), but I dont want the effort of doing a wedding/union/We only to find that it will defunk out and the items and all perks with it is useless...
If someone could confirm this, this could easier put the same sex marrige issue to rest.
