Alright, so I just finished the L50 Blacksmith quest, and the Hellfire Phoenix was my client. Who was she? Is she from 1.0?
Yes she was - her real name is J'moldva, and she was connected to the GLA class quests in 1.0, but from what I remember she was an Ala Mhigan refugee who was the first Ala Mhigan challenger to reach the final tournament in the Colosseum, but she threw a match with her opponent (a roegadyn GLA named Greinfarr) to appease the Ul'dahns who bet against her.
Unfortunately she was then regarded as an outcast amongst her own people so she and Greinfarr fled Ul'dah for Gridania, only for Greinfarr to run afoul of a unit of Wood Wailers they encountered while in the Black Shroud (who then refused to assist the wounded J'moldva due to them not wanting to involve themselves in 'blood quarrels' of those who kill for entertainment - J'moldva's injuries had been sustained in the Colosseum match she fought with Greinfarr). In the end J'moldva actually joined the Wood Wailers and turned her back on the Colosseum, and her heritage, and that was the last she was seen in 1.0. It's interesting that she's returned in ARR, and appearing during a crafter class quest too. :D
If I've missed anything I'm sure one of the Loremasters can go into greater detail (or point out any errors I've made ;)).
I don't remember full details but I remember a quest in 1.0 where in the coliseum, there was an unbeatable duo who was very famous. One night they were forced to fight each other and one faked their loss. I believe afterwards they fled to Gridania. I think these 2 may have been the duo from then
On a side note: Why the hell isn't Bronze Bull using the sword I made him in Halatali! I went through that effort and he still has his old sword ; ;
Edit: Ninja'd by Enkidoh who provided much better detail then what I remembered. Thankfully what I remembered wasn't too far fetched
Lol, her name was Moldva? So that's the gladiator the new big fish was named after. Awesome.
For those non-fishers who have no idea what I'd talking about:
Moldva - "This Ala Mhigan Fighting Fish has never known defeat, and for this remarkable feat folk have named it for the celebrated gladiator."
Ah, so the Bronze Bull was in 1.0 as well. That's who you make the sword for (though you're hired by the Phoenix), and his real name is Greinfarr. I see. Neat.
Don't presume you've seen the last of Greinfarr/Bronze Bull.
He was also part of the "Ul'dah clique" which included F'lhaminn. If the storyline persuing Niellefresne's death is to be further explored, we may see him again. (And the miner twins, for that matter.)
Uh.... who is Niellefresne?
He was F'lhaminn's elezen lover from about (if I've counted correctly) 15 years ago. Niellefresne was a former master of Ul'dah's Goldsmithing Guild. He was briefly mentioned in ARR's main story questline, after you and Alphinaud brought F'lhaminn back to the Waking Sands. F'lhaminn requested your help in having an earring repaired, remember? That earring is a memento from Niellefresne.
Well... I played version 1.0 for only a short while, and only from the Lominsan perspective, so I can't claim to know much about the original story. Not that it actually matters much, because ARR is meant to be a complete reboot. The references are meant mainly to be a nod to players of the original version.
What does amuse me about the Ul'dahn storyline, however, is Thancred's crush on F'lhaminn, considering how much older than him she probably is. I mean, she's a total milf, no doubt about that, but still... >.>
You do realise that Thancred is himself in his thirties, yes? It was 15 years ago that he first admired the Songstress of Ul'dah. :P
I see the v1.0 references as less of a nod, and more of tying up loose ends.
And I immensly look forward to seeing what Urianger can find out from Warburton's journal for this reason. This story about Minfilia's father and the man who sought to resurrect him (Neille) is far from over.
Both Greinfarr and Mumuepo appear in Halatali, Greinfarr as a NPC who opens the door and Mumuepo as part of the last boss. Both are connected to Niellefresne, Greinfarr being his best friend and Mumuepo being the Thaumaturge who was going to help Nielle with his little Warburton-revival.
So many names to keep track of... >.<
I need a glossary.
Mumueppo was also the old thaumaturge guildmaster as I recall. Also, 2.0 is not a reboot. The things that happened in 1.0 are canonically things that happened in the past of 2.0 as I understand it, at least when it comes to the overarching lore. Little things, like the appearance of the ascians, may be changed, but the important things are kept.
Well, when I say it's a "re-boot", I meant that for a brand new player who jumped onto the game only from ARR, it doesn't directly matter whether you know the original storyline. From such a perspective, everything in the past would be no different from any other kind of backstory. ARR doesn't start with you, the player, specifically recalling your heroics from Ver1.0, and starting where you left off. You literally started over again, whether or not you're a legacy player (of course, a legacy player is completely free to role-play otherwise).
And that's also why I say returning non-player characters are a "nod" to legacy players, because it's only really them who would fully appreciate the reappearances.
In that sense, though, I'd say that a bit more effort could have been taken to discuss F'lhaminn's backstory in ARR. I may know her from uploaded videos from Ver1.0, but even as a "legacy" player, I don't actually know all that much about her and her "Ul'dahn clique".
That's not quite correct.
Characters who were imported from version 1.x experienced a slightly different introduction and, depending on how much of the pre-calamity quest line had been cleared, different cutscenes will unlock to celebrate your past heroics. One of them even directly acknowledges your personal defeating of Nael van Darnus.
Granted, much of the story was consistent with new players for the purposes of easier writing and story-telling. But a "re-boot" is one of the last things I'd call it, particularly since people would have a tendency to compare it to a DC/Marvel comic re-boot.
I believe the lala twins own the mineral concern. Since the concern is a powerful business in Ul'dah, I'd say they have the potential to show up in any future events involving The Syndicate. I also expect that Greinfarr/Bronze Bull will be seen around in connection with Ul'dahn Gladiator culture. F'lhaminn being brought into The Scions hasn't really had any plot significance other than to satisfy Minfillia's unrest about leaving Thanalan. As I've said elsewhere, I'd like to see some demonstration of continuity from the Limsa and Gridania storylines.
Actually, Catapult wasn't totally correct (and I mean no disrespect to you Sir Icebound - I'm really sorry if it seems that way! :)), but not every 1.0 character got a special opening - only those who had passed a specific boss fight in the 1.0 storyline (the Lunar Transmitter battle in Castrum Novum, part of the 7th Umbral Era storyline). If you never passed this part of the 1.0 story (such as myself) then your 1.0 character just starts ARR like a new character (on the chocobo carriage or ferry), and npcs do not recognize them during the storyline other than some saying a generic "you look familiar" line which they also say to new characters as well.
It was an unfortunate turn of events, as SE never actually stated this would be a requirement for the 'Legacy' opening until after ARR's launch - there was an awful amount of confusion during the later stages of the Beta and early launch about what exactly the requirements to get the Legacy opening were, until SE finally admitted it was the Lunar Transmitter fight that was the requirement, leading to a lot of disappointment, even resentment, from some players, as mentioned here.
In any event, by the end of ARR's storyline it's mentioned that it's not what your character might have done in the past that's important, but what they're doing now. Ultimately though, all characters, whether they're 1.0 characters who passed the Lunar Transmitter and therefore are regarded as having 'fought at Carteneau' (and who got the 'Legacy' opening), 1.0 characters who didn't complete that part, and new adventurers, all are regarded as 'Warriors of Light' by the end. :)
Anyway, that's enough thread derailing from me. Back to 1.0 npc discussion! :D
