Hacker/Trickery question

So this guy in Gridania sent me a friend request in game. We had never talked or met. So I accepted and sent him a tell, and he replied. We exchanged only a couple sentences. Then he asked if he could add me on PSN. I said sure. We talked a little bit more, then he asked me if he could help me level my LNC since I'm leveling a LNC now. He's a level 50 DRG. I was suspicious so decided to come here and ask. I told him maybe later as I had to go away from PS3 20 mins or longer. He said to let him know when I was back, and he is just standing there waiting. It just seems suspicious. I can't tell if he is just a really friendly person, or if there is some kind of trick that requires someone to be on your friends list and partied. So I'm now on his friend list in game and on PSN, and he wants to party. It all just seems so sudden, and the fact that he's waiting when I said that I would be gone a while which is why I said maybe later. He's in an FC. Am I safe? Is he just friendly?

Maybe he just thinks you're cute and wants to spend time with you?

when was the last time you watched "The Cable Guy"?

I am unaware of any "hacks" that require pairing up friends lists, in-game and thru PSN.

Maybe he just wants to be your friend and decided to AFK too lol.
To our surprise there are some nice people in this game...

and find your location to do deeds unknown...or known.

Just sounds like some pervert randomly adding any girl they see hoping it leads to something.

His offer may be interested (as in recruiting for his FC) - though that still beats half recruitment offers on this game, where you just see an invite poping out of nowhere.

Or he may be "just friendly" (Yes, those people exist). Or lonely. or whatever.


As long as his offer to "help you leveling" does not include sharing account, I can't see what he could do to you (as far as scam/hack/... goes).

Just stay on your guard for what he may ask of you in the future (activity or personal info, RL or web-related), but so far, no reason to cut ties or fear this guy as far as I can tell.

He hasn't asked me if I'm a girl in real life, which I am. If he does I'll know why he seemed kind of attached. He could just be really nice, but considering how many jobs he has at 50 he might just be looking to help others and pass time doing something extra. First time I've ran into someone like that and I've been playing since beta.

After that it sounds like maybe he's either just looking for a new friend, or enjoys helping people in the game. I've known others like that, although they didn't exactly go about it the same way. I think the others are right that you should stay on your guard for now, tho.

Isn't it interesting that now we perceive anyone just exhibiting kindness or helpfulness as possible creep, weirdo, or scammer? I'm guilty as well its just crazy to me.

I've met plenty of kind people in game. It wasn't that. It was odd because without even knowing me or exchanging but a few words he adds me in game, then PSN, then wants to party, then waits while I was away after I mentioned "maybe later". That's the MMO friendship equivalent of 2nd base if there was a 2nd base for just friends, lol. Just took me by surprise. Everything seems fine, but on my guard. He went offline earlier as he had to drive for 3 hours.

this post reminds me of when I visit my parents in the midwest where strangers on the street and in stores will smile and say "hi" to you. although I grew up in the midwest, the east coast has re-wired my thinking in such a way that anyone who smiles or strikes up random conversation is either creepy/weird, a criminal or is after something.

Yeah I'm just saying times have really changed and people who are just nice are looked at generally as weird or as someone to be careful of. Like...I guess the concept of just like making friends anymore. People are always apprehensive instead of just welcoming or accepting without fear.

He asked for your psn? Probably examining people to see if they're on ps to make friends over most likely

If he's got so many 50s as you said, he might just be bored, having experienced most of what the game had to offer, and enjoys passing time helping people, or finding new people to enjoy the game with.

When you have completed most of a mmo, enjoying it again through a less experienced player is a common way to "rekindle the flame". I've seen this kind of thing often in various mmos, and often leads those people to enjoy helping others.

It would also explain why he seemed to be AFK/just standing there while you were away, instead of out playing the game for himself.
