I want to hear what you all think of holmgang.

Only thing i would like for holmgang personally, is for it to heal somewhere between 10-50% of the damage taken during its duration.....if it needs a change at all. I'm not a master of numbers for this game, so I'll leave its usefulness up to the pros here. To be a slightly more clear, after the 6 seconds of selfbind/immortality it currently gives, we get a HoT effect (or a straight up heal) for a % of the total damage we took during the 6 seconds. Just my suggestion. We as warriors do NOT in ANY WAY need a buff, just a suggested change. Again......we REALLY REALLY don't need a buff, AT ALL. As with all classes QoL changes are nice, and while this would be a buff, it feels to me more like a QoL change to an ability that tries to do way too much and fails at all of it.

If it just lasted twice as long or even the cooldown cut in half. Otherwise it's borderline useless

^ this. SE has this infatuation with twitch mechanics with a bad lag compensation problem.

Holmgang is 6 seconds, but you don't actually get it till the end of the animation (OMG I've so tried). That means it's really 4 seconds...

4 seconds...get some lag and that's like really 2 seconds to react...w.t.f.

Holmgang is fine how it is.

it's part of your job to monitor the amount of incoming damage you are taking and to predict heavy damage spikes and to react accordingly. Pay more attention or get a better connection if you think that it is the problem.

but wait until you hit a holmgang and forgot twister was next, that's always a bitch

I disagree. The required foresight makes the skill nearly unusable even using it for landslides or death sentences with its short duration, it is unreliable. You forget you have to have a healer cure you after you get to 1 HP or have split second timing with Thrill of Battle (which still leaves you at critical HP). Most of the time even a properly timed Holmgang still ends in death because if your healer still hasn't cured you after your 2 seconds of being 1 HP anything will kill you and even with Thrill of Battle popped right after, most boss attacks will still kill you. As a main healer with relatively quick reaction time healing I have seen Holmgang save a raid once. Once. That's impractical.

Plus with such a long cooldown it makes the secondary effects of Holmgang a one time thing that has no practical use because you can only use it once per fight and you just can't make a strategy work around that. That's impractical

I agree that Holmgang is very very situational. I use it more to keep a boss from moving than to survive an attack.
If things go wrong and your healers struggle keeping everyone alive while your HP drop fast, chances are high that Holmgang just delays the inevitable outcome of a fight.
If everything goes as planned Holmgang won't be required at all.

A few seconds longer duration and maybe a buff to increase HP recovered by healing spells (like Convalescence or Mantra) would be nice.

holmgang only helped me in binding giant in KB and sometimes binding sisters in garuda ex apart from that nowhere else... Unfortunately, bind is not applied on bosses (!) and my party got wiped in turn 1 when i thought it might work on Caduceus during split phase. After that i gave up on it completely.

Holmgang is really situational and only confident tanks can use it properly. I am not saying its useless but its definitely unreliable.

The biggest problem I have with holmgang is that as an invincibility move it does absolutely nothing to ease healing strain for it's duration. Some one awhile ago in a similar thread made the comment that it should save all heals applied to the tank for it's duration and then apply them all as it wears off, which seemed like a good idea to me.

Sometimes I'll use it as a makeshift interrupt on enemies susceptible to knockback, but that's about it.

Holmgang tries to do too much.

Remember guys. If holmgang lasted twice as long, you'd be rooted in place for twice as long too!

It's an awkward ability but don't feel strongly for or against changing Holmgang. It's better than what it was in 2.0.

What I really want is for them to remove the root from Holmgang. The other things are things I can live with.

It's an awkward and unreliable ability.

I like that. Not every ability should be useful 100% of the time. Holmgang has a weird, specific niche, and that's fine.

Is that really a big deal if you're single targeting something? Or rather the hate on the mobs in question is focused severely on you(Unless certain gimmicks apply)? I only see Holmgang used as a "Hallowed Ground" Mechanic..Which I feel is hardly any good when you need to see this coming miles away.

Well, an example will be t9.

You take a huge amount of damave after the "death sentence" by the ghost of mafkeoshc ( I have no idea how to spell it ). If you holmgang after that, you'll be rooted in place for 6seconds. But the ghost does a mini liquid hell on you shortly after, making you rooted in that are puddle for the duration of that 6seconds completely negating the purpose of holmgang.

Does it occur to you that you can use it...at the right time ? It would be good if people stop asking for the game to hold their hands all the time...

When will we see "Elusive Jump need to be changed cause if you use it after Geocrush, you can fall off the platform !!!!" ?

It's hard to argue there's a "right time", for a move that roots you in place in a game that places a lot of emphasis on dodging aoe's :/

Unless that ability is similar to Twister, in that, it will outright kill regardless of whether or not Hallowed Ground or Holmgang is active, why does it matter? The amount of times I have used it to bring an enemy closer to me is a number I can count on one hand. I generally use it as a stun because bound enemies cannot change the direction they are facing.

But it's most common use should be when you are about to die.

It's not an impressive skill, but it does something valuable and if you use it correctly it will be an underwhelming but important part of your toolset.

I can't count the number of times I've used it on one hand, because I haven't purposely used it yet :/

I find that Holmgang has a couple of uses:

1) Prevents you from dying when used in the right situation (i.e. using it when you know you won't be standing on a Liquid Hell or any other AoE when the bind wears off).
2) Keeping enemies from using certain moves (i.e. the lunge attack from the Magitek Vangob G-III, or that Sahagin in Leviathan EX).
3) Nullifying knockbacks (i.e. Titan's Landslides).

Could it be a better move? Possibly. The only change I'd like to see from it is that it actually pulls your target towards you if it is 1 yalm or further away from you. Maybe even boost healing received, or make your hits heal 100%-200% of the damage you deal (6s duration for a move on a 3m CD would be more tolerable if something like that was implemented). Ultimately, I'd like to see the skill actually pull the target towards you, and maybe extend its range to 9 yalms?

Aside from that, I think it is a skill that has potential to be an effective tool at a WAR's disposal. It all depends on how it is used.

Fireball comes 2 secs after DS during that T9 add. I'll only holmgang if i'm about to die from the DS. If i pop it too late I'd die from an auto attack, so please show me how I can use it at the right time sensei.

Change the duration from 6 seconds to 8 seconds would be a big help, I think... since the timer starts when we hit the skill but the effect doesn't kick in after the few intial frames of its animation. I think that's the only thing that makes it not functioning properly.

Holmgang has saved me at least a dozen times when the action gets frantic and healers are stressed to keep up. Split-second timing is irrelevant here. If a healer sees your health getting critical, they're going to be doing all they can to bring it back up. They don't have to SEE Holmgang, and you don't have to communicate that you're using it, for coordinated timing. It's just giving your healers an extra six seconds (OK, four... valid lag argument, OP) to save your life. They might have to dodge a mechanic, they might be a little behind in heals, they might need an extra second or two to change their rotation.

Basically, I liken Holmgang to making a last-ditch grab for the ledge as you're sliding off a cliff, and if your healers are on the ball, those extra few seconds can make all the difference. A very skilled group often won't even get to that point, so Holmgang is an effective niche skill--a "one last chance" button. In that regard, I don't think it needs any change.

Holmgangs best use/niche hands down, is in PvP

I find homgang to be pretty versatile and useful, i take pride in the holmgangs that save my life, and get them often enough, also it can be used to interupt casts if you stand slightly away from mobs then use it, also good for standing still in, for any boss with a push or pull. just takes getting used too.

After doing levi for so long... don't you just wish that Holmgang also just... grabs and pulls party members so they don't fall off?
Paladin has cover... holmgang should be tetherable to a party member too. Would be great for ifrit chains too.

... or MPKing.

The only issue I have is that it binds the player as well...which means your'll definitely eat the next incoming AOE...
