I've played a serveral games that has set bonus's with having x-number of each set (games such as wow, star trek online, neverwinter). These bonus's don't need to vary much, just something for having more then 1 or 2 items of a set.

These already exist in the form of the Grand Company sets. They should add more though!
Offering a dissenting opinion. Set bonuses take away a lot of the customization ability as far as what people can equip. I enjoy being able to mix and match things from the several sets of gear we have at our disposal in order to get the best performance. With set bonuses, the concept of best in slot gear is thrown to the wolves, and we're left with having to equip everything from a single set as though it was a single piece of gear.
I, too, enjoy mixing and matching from the 1-2 viable pieces of gear at a specific level.
Well perhaps Materia could hold set bonuses, it'd allow the variation in gear but also make Materia more attractive?
So technically u want it like monster hunter where you can slot in jewels/ gems ( materia )
To gain +1, + 2 , +3, -1 etc points that will contribute to an affixed number that will grant a bonus once obtained?
I rather perfer this than BiS stuff as it makes ppl go nutts over it.
There's not much difference tho in terms of customization i think.
I'm sure they will be included at some point but the longer they delay it, the better. Set bonuses creates an avalanche of balance problems as each set needs to out do the last to consider it an upgrade (unless it was identical but that's just boring). As the balancing problem grows, all kinds of other issues also arise with players having a hard time moving through transitions between the sets. It just becomes a mess that requires more time and planning to avoid all the pitfalls that can come with the system.
I think of set bonus in 11. Every peice you wore made the effect stronger. This men tyou benfited from just wearing 2-3 peices and many times the other gear choices for the other 2 slots outweighed the rest of the set bonus. It left a lot of gear choices in fact the illusion was that if you wore the full set you wore stronger then wearing a mix and match set. I wouldn't mind seeing that again. it would be nice if they actauly made use of the grand companie sanction. their is only like 9 peices of gear that make use of it. Give it a bonus like the sanction in 11, the one in wings of the goddess for example. You can pay GC seals in order to add bonuses to your sanction ,max 2. Make them like the free company buffs. 10% gear wear, 10min food buff, 10%xp boost, spiriting bond+ ect...
Set bonuses are bad in the same way that multi-slot gear is bad. Once you have a set, in order to upgrade a single piece, you need to upgrade ALL the pieces. Any tank who's found an awesome new set of boots but can't ditch the Darklight Flanchard because they don't have an accompanying nice set of pants knows what I mean. Imagine how bad it would be if you need to find upgrades for FIVE pieces of gear before you could use any of them.
This can be mitigated, as U'riel mentioned, with progressive set bonuses; partial sets give partial bonuses. Even then, though, it can be troublesome trying to figure out exactly how much of a set you need for that set to be worthwhile at all. And, in 11, at least, since you could change gear whenever you wanted to there was always the option of wearing a partial set most of the time and macroing the rest in when needed for specific set bonuses. In 14, we don't have that luxury.
I would have to agree with this sentiment. If you have sets then its likely the bonus will be in a useless stat (crit on a whm, ss on a smn, parry on a warrior, etc) or require you to slot pieces of gear that will have the stats you don't want (crit instead of det, ss instead of piety, etc) if you are going for max/min or BiS for a class.
If there was a set that was specific to each class or have multiple pieces to each slot (a body both whm and sch could wear but came in a crit or det heavy variant within the same set) so you could mix and match like variant A with variant B or two Bs, or two As and still get the same result C, so you could still customize your build to maximize the stats you wanted but still get a set bonus.
With the current system's pace of end game I'm not looking forward to sets unless previous set bonus or the gear itself can be upgraded.
I wouldn't enjoy having a set bonus that will only last me a couple of weeks before it becomes obsolete.
I totally have to agree with this idea. I personally love having sets of gears.
No, because of Accuracy
Ya, even if its small, this needs put in. In other games, when a group of items share a name they get a bonus for having all (or at least most) of the items of the set.
I enjoyed set bonuses in other MMOs and wouldn't mind seeing them added, but I think I really just want more interesting stats no matter what form they take. The system as it is is quite boring :(
A proc or latent affect would be cool. Full set Armor that crackles with energy & proc damage when struck... robes that shimmer or make the wearer semi transparent, offering higher evasion... so many ideas!
Not true, because it really all depends on how you want to gear your character, what kind of benefits those set bonuses provide, and what the stats on other gear looks like. It's entirely possible for the benefits of a set bonus to be pretty comparable to what you gain by mixing-and-matching gear.
