Empty Slot for any Job that isn’t wearing a shield, potential solution.

What can we do about the empty slot and where can we display it (if it even displays)?
In another game that I played, we used to have these accessories that were job specific and would add some very minimal effect, but were very coveted by the masses.

Example it was a Lucky Cactuar Needle that would provide an acc+2 buff or something small like this.
Since it was a slot that wasn’t even being used, it was wanted for that little extra bonus.

Although in the other game it did not display, I thought it would be fun to introduce this as some sort of visible accessory.

It could be as simple as a tattoo for warriors that displayed on the back of their armor or something equally as simple
Anyways, I was hoping we could get some idea’s going and as always if we get the support maybe, Yoshi and Team will implement it.

CON:

PLD would get kind of hosed…which is the biggest problem to this whole thing I’m proposing. But at the same time, PLD’s get something almost no other job can get…and that’s block.

Having said that I do acknowledge that PLD’s will feel they are getting hosed. As a PLD myself, I would feel slightly hosed, but of course I feel the justification is there for they can effectively block, which no other TANK can do.

Vanity, sure thing.. Stats? Nope. Here is why:

One handed weapons take into consideration that they will also have a shield equipped - so the stats on the main hand are lower then that of a 2-handed counterpart.
You could reverse the situation and say "ok well let's either increase the sword's or shield's stats a little, or reduce the 2 handed stats a little and assume they will have an offhand".

This would mean that you have to have a "legendary" or top tier offhand for every single job (even 2 handed ones), in order to compete with a boosted sword/shield stat of equal iLvl.

Not only is this a huge, nearly pointless time commitment for SE, it also increases the already large loot table (due to a low amount of shared gear). Can you imagine having to fit an Allagan accessory of Striking, Maiming, Aiming, Casting, Healing into the loot tables?

For vanity though? Sure thing.. What kind of accessories would you be talking about though?

Bring back the spear for fishing!

it wouldn't be just PLD that would get hosed. Dont forget the BLMs and WHMs who have the potential to wield shields as well

They could bring a shield job as a subclass with it's own skill sets to use and it get unlocked the moment you equip your shield. And you don't level it up if you don't have a shield equiped. And call the subclass Sentinel.
Of course only available with a one-hand weapon in the main hand.

So, if I'm reading this right, what you're saying is jobs that have 2 handed weapons (brd, war, blm/whm (for staff) should have some sort of accessory in the shield slot?

They could just do what they already did in XI, just add grips for 2 handed weapons that offer some stat bonuses. Which would work great, if you know, they didn't skimp on the stats and remove 90% of them in ARR (refresh, damage taken- etc). Because that'd be pretty useful, imagine a mage grip with something like "Casting speed" or "Refresh" on it. Too bad SE thinks anything more than the basic stats are too much for people to handle these days >.>

They did this in XI. They were called grips or straps. lore wise they were grips for the 2H Weapon.

I know, right?! I'm really disappointed that there aren't any of those special stats included in any of the "sidegrades" in FFXIV. It's very bland in terms of itemization.

Without replacing shields for PLD/BLM/WHM

These can just be vanity

Summoner/Scholar: Quills: Vanity
Warrior: Armguards: Viable slot?
Dragoon: Text bubble: So their character can automatically shout OMGWTFBBQ when they die to mechanics after jumping
Monk: Off-hand fist weapon animation. Vanity
Bard: Quiver: Vanity

Would be nice if Warriors can swing their axes with one hand seeing as the off-hand is empty

I agree, my example was from FFXI exactly...but Shields...they do get hosed still.

I do like the idea of Vanity for SCH, and something else for warriors (Arm band Possibly?)

A toothpick could be added...simple, and it could be a cactuar needle, or a fancy toothpick...

Just beef up the stats on some of the shields then. Nothing game breaking, just more to balance. Adding defense to a shield (don't see why this would be a problem, every mmo does it) would work out for plds.

That other slot is for your other hand. In this case, if you are wielding a 2-handed weapon, that weapon is taking up both hands. So they cannot hold another item there.

It simply doesn't make sense for one. Secondly, they COULD add something like others mentioned along the lines of grips for your 2-handed weapon...but if they do that they need to nerf the overall stats on your 2-handed item. Why? Because you already get boosted stats BECAUSE you don't have anything else in your off-hand.

@Rhysati - No nerfing, just thinking of fun things they can add. I also mentioned that they don't necessarily have to give a stat boost.

A simple vanity will do, but of course a boost in w/e stat would be nice ;)

Your right the simple thing would be like a "BLANK" on the shield in order to keep things even...

Bards should get instruments for their offhand. Just seems weird that you learn a song in the low levels and when you use it, you just randomly have an instrument in your hands. Some could argue the relic is an instrument, but come on now.

Give Black Mages a little Onion Knight like Lulu. Vanity of course, the little guy would just go and hit the mob for zero damage, the poor thing.

On second thought... Summoners should get a cattle prod. Stick it to -egi.
