Tank outdpsing All 4 DPS possible while doing job?

I ran into something of a big meanie lol in a party finder, who was a tank. He did his job fairly well but did screw the party over a bit in Titan ex. We were doing excellent with no echo buff our first group but healer made a mistake (might've even lagged as I experienced a lag spike but still managed to survive) and we didn't have trouble with gaols or heart or anything...our DPS was pretty great.

After the healer died the tank (belonging to an elitist FC) said he had the highest DPS and exited the fight.

I was just curious, how possible is it that a tank would be able to outDPS the entire group (not combined just the highest individual group) while still tanking? Or was this guy just lying?

They went in expecting an instant win. When they didn't get their way they ragequit. That's what I took from it anyway. I wasn't there obviously, but I'd guess the rest of the group was fine by the sounds of it. Just another elitist expecting perfection is all.

Bingo. And if he was top dps, I highly doubt any group would be able to break the gaols or heart.

Only way a tank is going to out-DPS four damage dealers is if all 4 DPS were afk or dead. He was just mad.

I'm pretty sure that's the case. I have had bad experiences with the FC he is from in the past back in 2.0, and apparently a lot of my links hells and other friends have had similar experiences. I'm almost certain he was lying but it still just makes me curious if it is at all possible. He didn't even retry with echo buffs XD (which I know are not reliable, but just a small boost, and we were doing well enough not to need them).

He just wanted to get in your head and mess with you, seems like it worked. I wouldn't worry about it, guy was just upset or whatev

I am just asking because I was kind of scared I was playing my job wrong XD I've been doing it so long and it made me question my ability to do so but thanks for the reassuring answers :)

Report him for using a parser and teach him a life lesson he will never forget.

I reported him for suspicion of such and even though I wasn't really hurt by what he said he could've easily hurt others so I did mention his behaviour. I felt bad about reporting him since I've never done that before but if anything using parsers is illegal so there is that.

My DD geared tank can hold up towards 250 dps in DD gear. He really could have been. I doubt he was doing more, but he could have.

I can't say if you are doing your job wrong or not, but if there is even a chance you think you are doing something wrong, maybe you should read the rotation thread and/or work on rotation, because thats something I almost never have to wonder as a DD.

I always experiment on dummies and read up on threads and I manage to keep my rotation up despite all the dodging and stuff, and I refresh buffs and replace dots when necessary, etc, pop cooldowns to get the most out of them, and so on. So I just started thinking what if everything was a lie lol.

Sounds like you're reporting him for being what you perceive to be an elitist attitude rather than for the intended purpose of actual griefing via parser-use.

I'd advise not to abuse the report function. GMs have more important issues to deal with.

If you think you're above "elitists", why sink to such behavior as to try to get him banned for being a "meanie"? Nothing you've posted here seems to constitute bannable harassment on his part, and you acknowledge it didn't reach that level which is why you used the old "ban him for parsing" fallback. Seeing as I highly doubt you'd report someone for parsing who wasn't being "mean" to you, you're attempting to use a widespread technically-against-the-rules-yet-tacitly-endorsed activity to make yourself the judge of what should be bannable harassment.

Yeah, I agree with this. It's honestly one of those things you should forget about and move on. I'm not saying it was right because it wasn't, in fact I despise people similar to what the OP had to deal with. The best thing to do is to not give them the attention. If they know they got to you they got what they wanted. It's best to deny them that.

I would never have done this, and never did before, but he put the party down. After realizing he came from an FC of what I know to be elitist/trolls (one member goes into CT to exploit a bug and stop groups from progressing), I decided to go through with it. I neglected to mention that he rudely stated that if we didn't one shot it he would leave. The reason why I neglected to state that was because I gave him the benefit of the doubt initially, thinking maybe he had something else to do. I know, I had a moral dilemma going through with it. Don't think I did it just because I wanted to feel like I am a better person or anything like that. I just thought maybe I could make a difference and make a stronger community. IF I made a mistake doing this, I apologize to you and others, but I just didn't want to tolerate this behaviour any longer, especially from his FC.

I probably would have debated it for awhile myself but everyone has their own methods. If this person truly gets banned then I'd have to tip my hat to ya because we need less people like them. Just be prepared if SE doesn't find anything. I've heard they take reports seriously, especially false ones.

If he is focusing on his damage more than the fact that he is tanking, it sounds like HE is doing HIS job wrong.

I debated over it for quite a bit and got some thoughts from friends, and whether or not Square Enix does anything is fine, I just hope I made the right decision and that we can all move on. If I made the wrong one I will be the first to admit it.

In any case, back to the thread, I suppose it's impossible for a tank to outDPS any DPS class if there is equal skill and gear, especially if the tank does have to tank.

He showed evidence of being a jerk. :P He probably lied to make himself sound superior. Don't think there was much evidence of a parser being involved. Not saying there wasn't, just not seeing much saying there was.

So the guy is an a-hole, liar, and idiot rolled into one. Hope the whole party blacklisted him.

Anyone who leaves a group that shows promise deserves to be blacklisted, worst kind of gamers are those with no patience.

impossible for a tank to out dps the DD, like you said he was from a elitist FC, so someone didnt do that .01 extra DPS then he left.

Report him for using unauthorized third party software to monitor DPS and harass or insult the players, easy.

I dunno, I think it's possible. Look at pvp with equal gear, tanks can do some serious dmg:p Not impossible for tank to out dps the dps, if dps are not chaining well.

Came in to say whatever everyone else said. If the tank is out DPSing 4 DPS they're all naked using a lvl 1 weapon and put all their skill points in "Intelligence" as melee, and as the magic casters put all their points in strength.

I don't know for a fact, but isn't it completely possible for a tank to out dps melee dps simply because melee dps need to move around so much more? If a tank can sit on his ass and execute his rotation without interruption, while melee dps hase to constantly break chains, then its not impossible for tank to do more dps than melee dps.

some damage > no damage at all from dodging.

Again, dont konw if this was the case. just playing devils advocate.

I can dodge and hit Titan.

There shouldn't be lowered DPS for dodging in most cases as melee.

Well, it is possible because I routinely do it, but honestly whoever is playing the dps has to be very bad at that job. I would say an average melee dps will out-parse a tank by at least 50%. Also from my experience tanking, I have to dodge just as much as any melee dps. People use dodging as an excuse too much. Once you learn to utilize the rather long gcd this game has, dodging and keeping dps up is really quite simple for any job.

If the tank is a WAR full STR with some dps accessory its possible.

Huh. Very interesting. I can understand the social context for elitism portion, it does make me wonder why it was considered cheating though as all the parsers I've seen in other games have just been a record of the combat log that cleaned up the data into a more readable format to figure out things for min/maxing a character. Anyways thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

Tank classes can certainly push good DPS...but only If they go in with DPS accessories and tank without Defiance/Shield Oath using pure DPS rotations. If a tank is doing this in Titan EX...he's going to either lose hate to a healer or die to a table flip due to lack of mitigation.

Had a tank telling me my Item level 83 DRG was doing the least damage out of all the DPS the other day because I was not the constant highest on the Enmity list.

I've played it enough by this point, I know what I'm doing Tank, does one of the healers having the most enmity mean they're doing the most damage? Hell naw.
