This is somewhat false. When a BLM goes to a low level fate, they usually can't finish a cast before the mob is dead. I can't tell you how many stupid fates I didn't gedal in or got bronze because my level was capped below Scathe or Bliz II.
Be honest: we all play black mage so we can bring that giant meteor down on everyone.
I do like to play blackmage for trash content like dungeons/primals, but when it comes to serious play I can't stand the lack of utility. Main healer anyways.
summoner can do that too.

Most dps dont really care as to how usefull to a party they are, they dps because OMG LOOK AT DEM NUMBAHS.
Despite the fact that overal monk and dragoon blow them out of the water, the biggest single hits come from BLM.
Because BLM (and BRD) are braindead simple to play.
That feel when 1st thing ur party says is " aww no BLM" when you get pulled into brayfox.....
That is not necessarily true. A 'good' BLM will aoe sleep a mob in a dungeon to lessen the stress on a tank and healer, while a 'bad' will spam Fire 2 and Blizzard 2 and wonder why the tank can't hold effective hate. A BRD who doesn't sing can ruin a run when the healer runs out of MP, or slow it down if they don't use the appropriate song for a party (Foe's on an all melee team or Paeon for an all mage team). Anything that drops those big numbers from appearing, for some, appears to be a hindrance.
They may appear to be braindead simple to play, but to be effective you need to realize the strengths of your class and maximize them to the benefit of the party.
I have yet to see any monk or dragoon out DPS me honestly. Always number one on the DPS scale here. They don't blow anyone out opf the water. While a monk or dragoon need to constantly shift their direction of attack from flank, to behind to flank again etc, im just standing there blowing stuff up. I don't need to be in a special area to get a 150 potency hit. To be honest, many BLM's that I come in contact with don't know how to be a BLM. Opening Turn 4 with flare? Just because you see a lot of BLM's doesn't mean they know how to play the class.
Actually, to keep your DPS as high as possible, it's not just spam Fire 1, there's a ton more to the BLM than you understand. Also if you know anything about bard, you'd know that most bards don't play as their intended role. A support class. But judging from your character on the lodestone, someone who has a lv1 THM and and lv4 ARC should hush.
I have to get THM to 26 for swift cast :( Eventually I may progress into BLM play but atm im having too much fun healing.
Lol. You haven't played with a good Monk or Dragoon then. Monk and Dragoons (and Summoners, for that matter) all blow Black Mage out of the water when it comes to pure DPS when played correctly.
And you're right, it's not just spam Fire I, but our main rotation is incredibly simple in comparison to the other classes, I wish it wasn't, as it gives people a good reason to say why our potential DPS lacks in comparison DRG/MNK/SMN, but it is how it is. The most complex BLM gets is simply understanding the mana tick timings. That's it.
False. The most complex thing about blm is understanding each fight and how to cast your long ass spells around the mob/bosses/targets timing and abilities. This is what people don't understand about BLM. They think its easy because of the crux of our rotation is two abilities. But there are way more little nuances about BLM that can seriously hinder your dps if you don't anticipate whats coming next and set up properly. How many times have you seen a blm have a long as spell interrupted because they got LOS by the mob they originally target?
The good thing about being a Red Wizard, is that you don't have to associate yourself with the common rabble black mages :P
I know some people that leveled and geared BLM just to farm myth faster. A lot of those brayflox myth speedrun parties only have BLM/BLM slots allowed or BLM/BRD.
Are you one of those blm that tries starting a fight with flare or something? None of your spells should take that long to cast once you get into your rotation. Not even flare. If you are sitting and waiting for a 3.25-3.75 second cast time, you are doing something wrong :)
Some guy was trolling me on Caduceus by doing this. Before we kicked him (he was being quite abrasive in chat anyway) I said "pulling" moved up a couple steps and he started casting Flare. I let him get the cast off without doing anything and let him tank Cad for a few seconds. :P
^ This, so bad D: I went and dropped 900 myth I was saving for my book (if I ever get done with atma, still only 6/12 -.-) on +1ing another relic, just because all these low lvl fates, everyone is running up, 1 shotting things. Not to mention it's semi-unfair that every other mage gets blizzard II well before the real level of it when set as cross skill
Two reasons why I play BLM.
One - BLM from 8-bit Comics said it best. "I casts the spells that makes the peoples fall down!"
Two - Richard from Looking For Group comics. More of a Warlock than a BLM, but has an affinity for fire magic, destruction, general mayhem.
Both suit me as role models quite perfectly.
Myth farm Brayflox HM, Tank, Healer, 2x BLMs.
I play BLM because it is the class I best can identify with. This is very important as I love roleplaying and therefore feels it is important that I feel at home in my class/character.
i personally started using BLM! i have every DoW and DoM lvl'd to 50 with BLM being my lowest at ilvl 88! I also used to down the BLM class as being bad or bland and believe me i hated it until i got to about lvl 46 and beyond it i can attest they do a crap ton of damage and given the right situation can very useful to a 4-8 man team. Almost to the point of "don't leave home without em". I respect BLM a lot more now!
The numbers tend to even themselves out in an actual encounter involving moving, but monk beats dragoon and dragoon beats everything else in maximum potential dps. The reason for that is because they have to move so much. You'll notice a huge advantage to bring melee once they have memorized an encounter and know all the possible times they should be dealing damage, as they'll out damage any ranged.
I would argue that keeping track of the mana tick timing is a more 'complicated' than watching your target so you don't waste a cast on getting LOS'd or on a target that dies before you finish, or you waste a fire cast on an opponent with 100hp for example, simply because in those instances you have a point of reference, being the target itself, or the targets hp bar, whereas with mana ticks it's all hidden from view. And I said for BLM specifically, the LOS/wasting large abilities on low hp targets is an issue for everyone, not just blm.
I found it the most fun to play. Unfortunately, it often gets put in "Most Optimal Speedrun Groups", which tend to bum me out.
Because.... People "think" is the best DPS just because it does BIG numbers.
