macro icon system of 2.2

Now that I have to use /macroicon to get a specific skill icon, how do I pick a skill that isn't used on my current job? Because unless it's available or equipped as an Additional Skill, it's just showing up as the generic grey box on my action bar.

Right now all my old macros are currently fine, but I'm now scared to change them in any way, shape, or form. I really love macros. Halp :(

On top of that I also use Ability Icons for Marco Icons (to be displayed in the USER MACROS window, not on the hotbar/crossbar) to differentiate macros for different jobs/classes and I can also quickly tell what each macro does by assigning the macro icon to be the same as the first ability to be executed by the macro.

All of that is gone now. Your macros would have to use those new generic icons that tell you absolutely nothing about the 100 macro that you can create. You will have to hover over each macro to see what's what. At least make it consistent by making the Macro Icon in this macro editing window to be the same as the one assigned by /micon.

I too am afraid to edit the macros I created before 2.2. It's outrageous to remove features after a major update for no reason.

I think I understand the reason for the change; In the long run, the number of icon pages will exceed the window, but can we at least know if there are any plans for /macroicon to extended beyond just our current job when displayed on the hotbar/crossbar and what ChestBear said, on the User Macros window?

I hope this is a bug. It states in the patch notes that we could use the emote icons, but for some reason I'm unable to. I use /macroicon "Change Pose", and it will not show the change pose icon. Am I doing something wrong?

Edit: I guess I have to use /macroicon "Change Pose" emote. I guess I have to use /? more often. :p

1)I don't think that's a very good reason to remove a feature. MMO is supposed to expand over time and removing things to make room for new ones is not expanding.

2) We can have more than 10 tabs. This shouldn't be an issue. I know for sure that computers can store numbers bigger than 10, and maybe, to not exceed the screen space, we can use scroll bar (or left/right arrows) for the tabs if we don't want to display all 11 of em at once (you know the technique used since MS DOS).

3) Assuming we can never have more than 10 tabs for whatever reason (Maybe some dev at SE believes that if you have more than 10 tabs, Ramuh would smite the em) they can split it into 2 or 3 lists. Say when you click on the "Edit Icon" button for a macro, it first shows you pop up menu with 3 options like "Ability Icons" - "Emote Icons" - "Other Icons". And each of those options can give you 10 tabs of icons. Problem solved.

4) It was fine the way it was before. If its not broken, why mess with it? What problem the old macro icons list had that the new one solved?

In the end, I truly believe there is no technical difficulty in letting players choose from more than 250 icons (10x25). They can always expand the list one way or another.

As a recap, to add 100 useless generic icons, SE decided to remove 250 skill-specific icons to make some room. There is also a known side effect described by the OP, /macroicon can no longer display icons of skills your class can't use on the hotbar.

Same here. Macro icons missing. The old ones and the new ones are missing with the exception of a few old ones and new ones that are not skill/action icons.

What I know for certain is that this is not intended. It's either a bug or someone at SE forgot to put the macros back when the patch went live, because it listed all of the macro icons that could be usable in 2.2, which included all of the old ones plus tons of new ones. They're all gone now. When I click the M square to choose an icon over 75% of them are gone.

I don't like it since it makes my macro window looks unorganized. I have to select the macro to check what is it for. It's not like before where I could figure it out by just looking at the icon.

I wanted to come in and voice my disappointment with the system. now when I /micon... its just a grey M box.

I really wish I could have a good way to sort them in the macro window.

This is pretty horrible with how it currently is if it is indeed a mistake.
It took me way to long to figure that I can't use icons from their list nor ones from off classes... My bars are now bland.

I do this too. Now I am at the mercy of number 1-10 and other ridiculous things that don't actually have anything to do with the content.

How do you identify a macro for Hallowed Ground? You assign it Hallowed Ground icon!

At least make the icon match the /micon :(

I agree, I use macro chains to build aggro and like to start off with the icon picture for the first ability in the chain. I have macros on several different jobs and it is difficult to remember what chain is linked to these generic number icons.

Imo the ability to assign the spell ability picture to the macro was much better.

I'd have liked some of the new icons if they'd been added to the previous list to expand the number of choices. They do represent an area that was lacking in the previous set of options. (There are some macros that don't necessarily equate to one particular skill, and these new more generic icons allow for that.)

But it's ridiculous to take away the widely used (and widely useful) set of ability icons just to add a few generic ones in their place. We should have both sets available.

What IDIOT though of REMOVING the previous icons???? While I might find use for / like some of the new Icon I do most certainly miss the ones that have been removed. Please STOP messsing the stuf which is not broken and put those back - even at cost of loosing the new "generic" icons. Wasn't the cog wheel overlay graphics over the original icons enough to distinquish between macros and actions?

I agree that this was a change for the worse and does very little to expand on the game. What's the point of directing their users to a Available Icons list when you're unable to either use most of them? Honestly I wish they'd put the old macro system back.

They are probably worried about ps3's blowing up with memory issues. Got to dumb it down to save memory that way it will load with more consistency... maybe? lol

Removing the old icons was a really bad idea. It makes it so much harder to keep track of what's what in the macro editor. I also set my icons for primarily visibility in the editor. /micon takes care of the icon on the bar, which is sometimes different than what i set in the macro editor, and i like it like this. Why don't you just make the icon picker window a little bigger, add a scroll window to the left with tabs in it which has various categories, like each class, then have the right side be the icons with the numbered tabs? Kinda like a mixture of how the achievement window works and the current icon picker.

The paradox here is that it has nothing to do with the memory - all the icons are still present in the system, only stupidly excluded from selection in the Macro settings screen - "Well" done SE!

The macro icon user interface is by no means in its final form at the moment and we will continue to make gradual updates to it.

In patch 2.3 we'll be making it so that when you set macros to the hotbar, the icons you specify will be displayed regardless of your class. Additionally we’ll be making it so the icon list in the user macros window will display the icons you indicated with the /micon command.

We're planning on making it so you'll be able to easily find the appropriate macros based on their icon in the future.

We have to wait till 2.3 for it? Kinda lame considering it was perfect in 2.1 then destroyed entirely in 2.2...

I don't know if you want to add when you mouse over a macro whatever /macroicon spell you have set, it shows it's tooltip, just an idea even though not required.

what about seeing tooltips with macros would luv to mouse over my eye for an eye macro and see the the ability text

Sometimes I feel like I don't get their logic!

While were at it can we add a macro developer on the website so I can write my macros at work and use them when I get home to my console.

This may be old now but the macros are all still there, just hidden. To get it to show up properly on the hotbar you have to visit the macro creation screen:

Create a new macro but start it off like this for ex:

/micon "Foresight"
/ac "Foresight" <me>

Make sure to leave the picture blank, and when you assign it to the hotbar it will show the picture for that ability.

Well, it doesn't have to be left blank, just select whichever of that limited selection will help you find it within the Macro window in case you want to go back and edit it later. But if you use the /micon command, it overrides that picture on the hotbar, so the Macro window itself is the only place the initial picture will show up.

Thank you! I was just about to post my support for this. My excessive macros will thank you. Now if only the macro text will be across the button, this will be perfect system.

Been searching for a solution to this problem since 2.2 started. Finally, traction! I was hoping for an advancement on what Xairuz found:

There DOES seem to be a way to locate selections of those hidden macro icons using modifier terms like 'emote'. I have a macro which calls for raid party members to focus on balloons/napalms in CT which I wished to use the Cherry Bomb minion icon on. Based on this I had to write /micon "Cherry Bomb" minion in order to get it to properly show that minion icon.

However, macros using icons from other classes (such as using a Summoner-job icon when I'm a Black Mage) eludes me; specifying Actions or Summoner as the modifier does not work.

Has anyone else had any luck gleaning the modifiers to get these to work, at least until Squenix refines the system's clarity in 2.3?

So here's something that's bugging me. When I use an icon of an ability I can't use, for e.g.; Using /macroicon "Shroud of Saints" on Warrior, The icon is forever darkened. Will this be ever addressed? It's not like the macro is trying to cast Shroud of Saints, I just want the specific icon. :(

I just going to say this.

2015 and it's still crap.

Why do I need to waste a line of code for a /macroicon just for it to be greyed out?
The greyed out /macroicon works. but it just makes it looks like it is unusable the entire time(Like when you level sync.)
Sometimes we need all 15 lines for our macros and /macroicon prevents that.

/macroicon is great for when we need to see the cooldown and stuff.
I still have some of my old macro icons, thankfully. If I knew you were going to delete every icon and put 4 tabs; I would have make 100 blanks macros.

It's 2015 and that comment is 2011, why haven't it been improved like you said it was?

I know this thread is probably dead, but I'm sure everyone that uses macros would like an answer.
So I'm going to try and revive this thread.
