Things That Annoy Me As A SMN

What are things that irk you on your class ? As a SMN I'd have to say:

- In AoE situations, When my target dies before I am able to apply Bane.

- When I prematurely Fester Before Bio fully applies ( I know about the delayed application, but it still happens sometimes)

- When Tank runs out of Shadow Flare thinking its a Mob Attack. ( You'll be surprised at how often this happens)

- That Enkindle has such a long delay before it acutally cast .

- That Sometimes Enkindle is wont cast at all although the cooldown started ( Does this only happen to me ?)

- And the #1 goes to: Tanks that dont use Flash/Overpower in AoE Situations.

That's not SMN specific. Noob tanks and melees tend to run away from all kinds of AoE effects. Esp. bard's Flaming Arrow.

What annoys me the most, is the quirky pet behavior in some instances. First rooms of CT, for example.
Even being set on Place/Obey Garuda-egi just loves to fly away and die from poison.

What I found even stranger is that if I have it on steady and cast a healing spell on it, it will fly off and try to attack anything that I (or the party) has aggro on. You have to keep calling it back. Silly little Egi.

The AI for summons can be so troublesome. For example, when I'm in conflag phase during Twintania fight, I'll tell Garuda to attack the conflag (or dreadknight), and after that, she decides to come over to me on her own (as if she had nothing else to do) especially at the wrong time when fireball is coming up. I guess I forgot to use "obey" back onto Twintania, but thing is I don't use "heel" to have her come over.. Sometimes the pet AI is a bit unresponsive to the point where I have to spam the button for contagion constantly; it's kinda frustrating, but can't do a lot of damage without the summon. *shrugs*

The thing that annoys memost, is the fact that most Party Finder parteis doesn't even want Summoners to EX primals. And one time I got a Titan EX party from PF, we had 2smn's 1 blm and a bard. Bard and other healer were constantly whinig how we won't make it cause "too many casters, and 2 f*king summoners" and we ended up killing titan on first try.

And the fact that pets die nearly instantly on the 1sr part of CT cause of the poison pools.

And the general "summoners are worst dps". Me and few fc mates (paladin and scholar both ilvl 90 and I was i86 at that time) we wanted to do one HMHM, but didn't get other dps, so we got some random from PF, we ended up locking the other dps out of the last boss, 'cause we were rushing the run, and the three of us killed the last boss and adds easily.
And then, most times when I DF HMHM I'm on sch, dpsing as much as I can on last boss, we still fail to get the adds down fast enough.

I hate the bone dragon room for this too! No matter what my summon flies straight through the poison after he dies.

I have found that the delay is actually due to your pet already casting another ability. I used to spam contagion as well losing a lot of DPS from lack of Ruin, but then later figured out if you only hit it once he will go ahead and apply contagion after the current spell casts.

Yeah, I find this funny too even though I have gone into turn 5 and consistently put up #1 or #2 DPS against people that have more allagan drops than me.

for CT I just park Garuda on a safe spot and don't let her do anything until we're killing the dragon.

As for pet peeves, the delay on using contagion/enkindle. Especially enkindle's. If I want to use it on a dps conflag I have to try casting it before it even appears

Things that annoy me when I've played as SMN:

Seeing other SMNer's spam RUIN 2 and don't dot and then justify that they are a pet class so they don't need to. at 50.
Mind YOU THIS SMNER was in TURN 5. They have not won yet - I am glad.

But that bug where Garuda just runs off, in this glitch like habit and return to my side. I always think OH SHIT I PULLED on accident. Nope glitch. lol

That's a very specific spot in T1. Just moving past it and heeling your pet will allow you to avoid it.

For the sake of playing devils advocate they are right they did sign up to be a summon class not a dot class.

Yes it's dependent on pet as well but we picked him up as to replace our missing dd for the night. He ended up standing in neurolink during twisters. Even though we told him to get out because nerf dd. We ended up kicking him out of the pt because he rarely put up dots and consist spammed ruin 2. Also said shadow flare is worthless in turn 5. yeah. So just a really bad smner in general. Don't know how he got past other parties.

only thing that grinds my gears is the time it takes for enkindle to finish the atk. Though I've gotten it to the point where i can time it correctly,with rouse+spur buffs, to hit titan heart and the gaol right as gaol appears in titan ex. Helps other dps get to titan a bit faster.

Other than that I dont think there is much that annoys me with smn. Biggest thing used to be having to target enemy to set in obey, but since they fixed that I've liked it more and more.

For me it's Contangion, it said has same range with wind blade so i assumed when Garuda enter 25y for maxed range windblade it'll have no problem with contangion, well...i was wrong. Sometimes even i pushed nothing happened for the next 10 seconds ++ so i need to move garuda a bit closer to the enemy.

Also you start off as an Arcanist, not specifically a summoner.

Only thing so far is the idea that SMN isn't a strong class. Probably the most fun I've has was farming Garuda EX with a 4 SMN Party. The DPS was so fast that we only had to do one Sister phase. Garuda was 1/4 health before that started too. Sisters dropped so fast that the twisters wouldn't spawn.

Oh I'm sorry, I always thought that SMN was the only thing good that comes from ACN, you mean people actually use it for anything else??? lol silly people ACN is for SMN

for mobs i usually apply the dots on the 2nd or 3rd monster and then bane it... so the time for dots goes almost all the way and applies to all the enemies without losing the chance to use bane

Usually. But I've also had a number of times where I only hit it once and five seconds later it still hadn't gone off.

I think the biggest problem for me right now is the bad pathing. The T1 boss is a particularly annoying example. After accidentally pulling him once (I skirted him; my pet didn't), I've taken to releasing my pet while moving onto the platforms, and not resummoning it until I'm in position on the far side.

I haven't really done dungeons as Smn, so my input is grain of salt, but when I've solo'd with it, there was something I found annoying, which was when I was mounted, I had my pet on Steady since you can't Heel while mounted so I won't lose it off to some mob, then I dismount and if something starts attacking me that I actually want to defeat, if I hit "guard" it would go off and attack some other mob that already stopped following me instead of the thing that was CURRENTLY ATTACKING ME. So that's when I learned to only hit obey in that scenario. But I still think that is pretty dumb.

Then there's the fact that the level 50 Smn quest seems to absorb all the extra difficulty they decided to not give the Sch quest, which was stupid easy in comparison (and even in comparison to the level 40 Sch quest).

Anyway, Summoner mains are welcome in any party with me. I always appreciate a dps that can use resurrect in a pinch for difficult encounters while still doing their dps job like a boss. I was in a 1 Scholar + 1 Summoner FATE team, got best score every single one.

I don't know why anyone would think Summoner wasn't as good as other dps. Are they somehow not combining your damage output with your pet's?

Yep, the amount of PF parties that doean't want any smn is mind blowing. I tried to get some Turn 4 PF parties yeaterday, well, EVERY T4 out there only accepted BLMs. Later that day my friend and his FC was online, we ran T1 with 3 smn 1 brd, easy. T2 with 3smn 1 bard easy. T4, 2smn 1 drg 1 brd, Soldiers died nearly half faster than with my "main" group, in which we have 1blm 1 smn, and bugs aoes were fast too.

Good aoe dps, good 1v1 dps, E4E, virus, in-battle raise, slow(shadowflare), and people still refuse to even think of taking a summoner. I just can't understand their reasoning.

Pet classes are always looked down upon in MMO's. Not sure why. :(

I've only just joined FFXIV on PS4 (I'm here trying to get some sense of where the game is heading) but I played a lot of WoW and I know exactly why pet classes are looked down upon! It's got nothing to do with the class or the absence of skilled players (after all, players who play Hunter in WoW often play all the other classes as well) but it has everything to do with the fact that pet classes attract a lot of players who only want to play a pet class and are basically using the pet auto-attack to offset their unwillingness to approach the game with any optimal technique.

We all know that an elite player can do amazing things with any class, but I think that pet classes have a deserved reputation for attracting people who aren't that sort of player. I guess people forming parties feel that on average that the prejudice gets them more robust groups.

Annoyances: contag/enk delay, players that run away from titan when they're getting jailed, tanks that move mobs outside of shadow flare after it's cast, that we can't adjust scrolling combat text to make our DOT and pet damage stand out.


I don't think there's a bias against smn after 50. They've been sought after as "BLM with battlerez", from what I've seen. Before 50, I assume most SMN are going to be bad...very bad. It's a tricky class to play.

excluding the delay of Enkindle and Contagion I find that Summoner class is a lot of fun to me. I used to main BLM but I was so bored using always Fire Fire Fire Blizzard3 etc.
Summoners have many abilities, and it's challenging because you have to think about many things while u use your abilities: order your pet what to do and what not to do, refresh dots, use in an intelligent way your AF stacks, virus, e4ae, resurrection.

So many playing favs in myth farm Ive ran as SMN in brayflox with a BRD second and BLM second and we cleared them around the same time. Mobs are cake for SMN if you know what you're doing. Rouse + Spur + Aerial blast ain't no joke. I usually use that combo with the first mob to give it a headstart to cd for the second mob. Then raging strikes + Swiftcast + Shadowflare + all dots + bane + contagion + run through the crowd miasma II for good measure. It may seem like it takes some time, not really. I usually have all that up before BLM AoEs.

I don't have any real annoyance with SMN aside from the fact I think the pets could have looked better. I love the class, its a heavy hitter, and can hit when everyone else cannot, insta rez (ive saved a couple of instances from wipe), has a personal tank. As far as skills go? only thing I have an issue with is Aerial Blast cd. If only it had the same cd as Spur we'd be first best AoE rather than second BLM wouldn't be able to touch us!

If just speaking of annoying things, when in party that wants to sleep any mob more than 1V1 (which I can handle just fine - just can't bane so fester will be just fine) but when there is no marking of mobs while doing this, I have to wait until i can clearly see who is taking direct damage so as to not disturb the sleeping beauties around me… /annoyed just mark them not too hard...

Thread should've been called "Pet Peeves: A Story Of A Summoner And His Egi"

Can't really say I been having to many problems when using my Egi as of yet other than the delay between giving them a order to use a skill and them actually using it. Even if they're not doing anything.
