I think the graphics and design of this game are limited by the PS3 like open world content, animations and the Egi system for Summoner's.
And yet its got many happy players, success and money from it.
On my high end gaming rig it is night and day. It may not be over the top graphics but if you do a side by side of ps3 and max settings on a high end PC you can see it is not being limited as much as everyone would like to complain about.
and anyway the gameplay is great, that is what creates a lasting game not how great it looks
Design decision because people said Open World is an outdated content during the 1.x polls toward 2.0's development.
Design decision - Yoshi said he hated how in XI multiple summoners could summon powerful beasts and it "cheapened them" to do so, so we got popcorn and candy summons instead while the summoner itself is still the more powerful.Quote:
Egi system for Summoner's.
PS2 MMORPG, btw.
And yet for it's time, XI played and looked great - Because FF games in general usually did both.
Remember a time when a video game could look, play and sound great?
Oh great and merciful forum gods, give me thy everlasting thread-closing power. Thine will shall be done. I shall smite the uneducated with extreme prejudice.
Absolutely it did. Hopefully if we keep pressure up for everyone to migrate to PC/PS4, eventually it will become financially unwise for SE to continue PS3 support. Then we can move on to complaining about being limited by the PS4 until the PC master race reigns supreme.*
*The above post was ~1% joking, ~99% completely serious
The quality of the graphics on PC is not limited by PS3. PC has it's own, separate settings that somewhat reflect the capabilities of the platform.
What is limited by the PS3 is content. Zones are tiny, no open-world dungeons/bosses, etc. etc. The PS3 is why everything is instanced.
Zones are tiny is true to get around the PS3's memory limitations.
We have open world bosses through fates. I'm sure there's a lot that wants them separate from fates, however this is not a ps3 limitation.
Instanced content has nothing to do with PS3 limitations. SE could have added open world dungeons that had tiny zones like FFXI. Instant content is so players can do content and not compete with each other.
Edit: Expanding on tiny zones. The memory problem is with the limited unique assets that the PS3 can handle. Larger zones are possible, however the larger the zone the more copy and pasting will need to be done.
Depends on what we're calling graphics, really. In the purest sense, yes. The PS3 has little effect on what sort of textures and lighting the PC client can run (or it shouldn't, though it seems like SE still somewhat limits PC textures based on the PS3 for no readily available reason...)
What it does seem to limit, however, is the complexity of models, and the animations we get. Those things aren't exactly graphics, but they are important compliments to graphics. A grey blob with great physics can potentially look better than a super high-res rigid statue. I mean, that's debatable, but I think you get my point. Hair is our primary offender here. As a Miqo'te, I basically have 3 hairstyles: The 'clips through literally everything' style, the 'floats on top of an invisible surface' style, and the 'all of the above' style. Everything is just a variation of one of those 3.
If SE really must cater to the PS3, I feel like they could at least give us a ton of these tiny zones. I mean, I still maintain that these zones are vastly larger than WoW's zones (People keep telling me I'm wrong about that, but god dammit I played that game from 2006-2012 and explored every square inch of Azeroth, I know what I'm talking about) but they could always be bigger.
Granted, I'll always say 'make it bigger' until Hydaelyn has the same surface area as Saturn...
Judging by your join date I'll assume you didn't keep up with 2.0/ARR's development.
It was voted by a large margin for people wanting smaller zones. It has nothing to do with PS3 - The original 1.0 used more copy/paste than other MMOs did because of the PS3 memory, as every zone was designed with 'soft zonelines" in mind in order to not kill the PS3's memory.

Careful, I had another thread practically wanting to skin me alive and burn me at the stake because I pointed out the copy-pasted zones. The general opinion around here is that the 1.0 world was perfect in every way, and anyone who says otherwise is a heretic. It's the 'vanilla wow was best wow' crap all over again...
Anyway, you've identified the core problem of massive zones. The days when you could just run your terrain brush back and forth for an hour and call it a zone are over. These days, every single minute detail has to be crafted to perfection. A couple of square feet can take days. So of course, the development time for a single zone has increased astronomically. Thus, the goal today is small but prettier zones. I'm not saying we should stop demanding more from SE, but we need to keep this in mind before we start shitting ourselves because they weren't able to triple the landmass in a month.
So, What's the problem exactly? The game might be limited but its still fun.
What!, It's pretty hard to defend this:
Black Shroud Final Fantasy XIV 1.0
This is copy/pasted zone at its worst. Well at least the textures are nice :p
The content in the game is mostly instanced because it is a theme park style MMO by design. By having most things in the theme park style, players can decide what "rides" they go on that day. It's about ease of accessibility and less to do with limitations of any kind. Whilst it is likely that Yoshida would have preferred to have foregone the PS3 and just focused on PC and PS4, the PS3 is not really influencing any limits in the current game and it's design. Yes, the PS3 can't display as many models (for example) but the PS3 limits itself more than it limits anything the game is offering.
It's obvious, though, that any crazy things that SE wants to do (like Yoshida's example of flying around a dragon and sliding down its tail etc, I forget the real scenario painted), they'd have to stop supporting the PS3 and that is on the table eventually.
This game isn't instanced because of PS3...It's instanced because that is what the community called for during the redevelopment of FFXIV
FFXI was fully open world and still has support for PS2 users. I ran on PS2 for the 8 years I played XI, and laid claim to many HNMs and was relied to stun devastating attacks on RDM/DRK. Did every End Game possible, from Dynamis to Abyssea Runs, The graphics weren't as smooth and streamlined as my counterparts...but i still logged the hours.
Yea you couldnt dye your gear or summons shitty minions or call upon different mounts. To me, Mounts and Minions are dumb and pointless. I will forever only use my Choco as transport.
Whoa someone's Jimmies are obviously rustled. You do know that accounts without active subs can use the forums right? You do know some people still play the game to play with friends right? Or some people stay around to see if it'll get better.
Also If I were you, I'd take spelling classes.
Wow, you just don't quit don't you? This sheer statement either proves that this post is either a troll bait or you've never actually played WoW. I'll quote myself again:
Barrens alone took half an hour on foot to walk through, and, saying once again, that's just one zone, Azeroth had two continents at launch and each continent had 20+ zones.
Again take a look at this
http://www.malin.us/images/aion/aion...rd_minimap.jpg
That's one of Aion's starting maps, there's several more bigger ones, way bigger and I think WoW's maps are bigger than Aion's. All of it 100% accessible, if I wanna get stuck in that ditch, guess what? I can >:) Not to mention NO loading screens every 6 seconds.
Oh nice, another thread blaming the PS3 for everything perceived as bad in the game while conveniently ignoring that most if not all design decisions were made to accomodate low end PC's too.
Actually, the PC client having graphical settings is the reason why the "PS3 limitations" "argument" is irrelevant.
That and the interview where Yoshi mentions that when they did a survey of the PCs in China's netcafes they found out that most of them have specs comparable to those of the PS3. But I guess you guys can continue to ignore reality.
OP said one sentence this whole thread and everybody else just goes at each other. GG.
Not the mention the amount of memory the minimum supported PC has a ton more memory to work with than the PS3. 2 GB system ram and video cards with 512 MB of memory.
PS3 is 256 MB system and 256 MB video.
SE can set the bar for minimum supported PC specs.
For the PS3 it's either all or nothing.
Hmm
Why do you choose a map that make the zone look bigger than it is? Or did they changed the zones?
This is how I remember it:

To me this thread is coming across as pc vs console players.
Okay now you're just lying. On foot, Barrens took maybe 5 minutes to cross. I can provide you any amount of proof that I played WoW from An'Qiraj all the way to Pandaria. If you'd like, I can even send you a folder of over 12,000 screenshots of a game that you're completely misremembering. I would be willing to bet a small fortune that I've explored Azeroth far more thoroughly than you. I know full well the size of each zone.
Please take a moment and go to this website. Your nostalgia seems to be blinding you from facts.

edit: Okay, seems like half this thread seems to know literally nothing about Warcraft. Let me make this clear: Azeroth is bigger than Eorzea. Of course it is, There's 5 continents and a few dozens zones. It's had near a decade of development. But jesus christ, if you honestly think that it took a fucking half hour to walk across barrens, you have never actually played WoW. As for the Aion thing, I already said I was wrong. I hadn't played it in years and I simply forgot how big it was, but I admitted that and you keep bringing it up because, frankly, you're being awful. But I will not budge on the WoW thing. I can almost guarantee I have played WoW more than ANY of you, and I will not sit here and be corrected by people who don't know Storm Peaks from their own ass.
edit again: Okay, I cut a lot of what I said out because I was being overly hostile and it was uncalled for. I was upset, but it didn't justify the things I said. I apologize to anyone who was offended, I don't want to be the kind of person who just goes off like that.
Why do you keep making the most pointless topics? You made like 3 of the same topic over the weekend. Someone needs to repost that dead horse gif from your other thread and that should be /topic
My basic ACER PC only bench-marked 2K. And it's got an AMD-A6 3620 w/Radeon 2.2GHz and 4GB RAM. It sure ran like crap during the test.
