Do you think patch 2.9 will be the last patch for ps3 since 3.0 will be a brand new expansion to the game? Or do you think and earlier patch will be the last patch and development for the ps3?
Did they mention they would be dropping PS3 support? Can you give a source?
SE still supports the PS2 version of FFXI despite Sony having abandoned the hardware themselves - I don't think SE will be cutting support for the PS3 version of ARR any time soon.
They have already said that the new expansion is in development for the PS3, as well as the PC and PS4, so no 2.9 will not be the last patch for PS3....
it's alrdy been said that ps3 will last for awhile even after 3.0
They will drop support at a certain Time, but they did not mention when that would be. But they will support PS3 up to the Expansion ( including expansion ), or even longer?!

GW: As for the PS3 version support, are you planning to continue supporting forever even after the PS4 version is out, is that your policy?
Y: Currently, we are working on plans for the expansion pack, but we have the PS3 included for this expansion pack.
GW: So that means, in future, after this expansion pack, there may be a time where you won’t be able to play it?
Y: It may be possible in future.
GW: Oh? How many years later are we talking here?
Y: That’ll depend on how many players are playing on the PS3 version. In the presentation we did earlier, we talked about wanting to continue keeping FFXIV innovative, but when we try to achieve something innovative it requires some machine power to make it possible, that type of situation may occur. When you think about how other MMORPG’s are mostly made for the PC, it will work with certain PC specs, for example, sorry for bringing up EQN again, but for something like that which requires physics involved in the map and players, it will require high spec PC to make it work. If that gains a lot of attention and grabs a lot of players, when the players moves to a rival company, we can’t just sit and do nothing, we have to have some of our own weapons to fight back against other MMORPGs.
For example, getting on a flying mount and diving from a high altitude straight down to lower altitude and then having a 200m long dragon, and being able to fly around freely. If we can get a large scale F.A.T.E. like this one, it’ll be amazing to look at, and it’ll feel good as well. However, in order to do that it will require a minimum requirement on the hardware specs.
As we mentioned many times, we are developing this game so there won’t be as much gaps between players play experience due to the hardware. However if we keep doing that, and come to point where we can’t be innovative, that’s not “FF”. That’s why I am not going to say here that we will continue to support the PS3 forever. That doesn’t mean you won’t be able to play it a year from now, not thinking like that so please do not worry.
that’s why we put in support to make sure they can switch to new hardware for free, if we can do something together with SCE we will try to do something proactive.
Not an official translation, but the translation from Reinheart which is pretty accurate.

3.0 doesn't come necessarily after 2.9
3.0 might be after 2.5 or even after 2.11

the post is in french but the quote from famitsu's interview is in english (Reinheart's translation)
Also, Elmoria confirmed that IF they drop PS3 one day, the notification will be made soon enough to allow the transition to PS4 with no problem, and it would be made ONLY IF enough players had dropped PS3 for the PS4 in the first place. She also said that saying anything like "PS3 will be dropped" would be pure speculation and thus has no real truth for the moment.
Lol you beat me to it to posting this.
A) We have no idea what patch we will be at before the expansion. As far as we know it will go 2.0 > 2.1 > 2.2 > 2.3 > 2.4 > expansion. We just have no idea when the expansion will come in relation to the .1 patches.
B) Yoshi said the would evaluate the ps3 situation AFTER the expansion pack, and that it was going to definitely support the ps3. Anything after that is up in the air. As far as we know it could be 2 expansion packs before the ps3 user base dwindles enough that they'd be willing to drop it.
C) This thread invites speculation in which there are absolutely no facts or information we can work with to come up with any realistic estimate. Any such estimate would be a complete guess.
Honestly with the ps4 version coming out soon, a lot of players are going to be upgrading from their ps3 to ps4. In addition ps4 are becoming a lot more common now so it wouldn't surprise me if by the end of this year or early next year we will see a dramatic population drop on the ps3 servers. I am sure all ps3 players are willing to leave that lag and latency behind lol.
I believe Yoshi-P mentioned somewhere that FF14ARR will support PS3 all the way into 1st expansion timeline.
Most likely PS3 will continue to be supported until 2nd expansion or sometime around 3.X updates.
If they keep following WoW religiously like they've already been doing then 2.4 will be the last patch before the expansion, a couple of things point to it, mostly primals. They've been releasing one primal per patch so if you look at the primal poster from around launch only Leviathan, Ramuh and Shiva are left and one of them is coming in 2.2, next CT will be 2.3 and Ramuh is already confirmed, so 2.4 will be Shiva and probably just turn 10 with a boss fight against Bahamut, of course they could still do a 2.5 solely focusing on Bahamut. Shiva being the last primal is the perfect transition to the expansion too since they've already confirmed Ishgard would finally open by then, what with Ishgard or at least part of it most likely unfreezing after defeating her, plus the whole plot is currently moving towards dragon/zodiac serpent gods which is a perfect fit for Ishgard.
It was said that PS3 would be supported at least until the first expansion, after that they would see what happens. Yoshi-P was extremely vague, and it had the feel of someone telling people what they wanted to hear even though he had absolutely no intention of doing it. Take it as you will, but considering that FFXI STILL supports PS2, I don't think SE will have the balls to drop it no matter how much PC players complain about it.
A little program education for those of you who want to know... The version is the first number 2.x The number after the dot is how many times the version has been revised... Example 2.3 its the second version of the program and has been revised 3 times... When 3.0 comes out that means that it will be a third version and then the 3.x is how many times it is revised... So it could be 2.111 before 3.0 comes out... Hope this clarifies things
What now? yes most likely most PS3 users will convert to a PS4 version when they get a PS4 no doubt. First though, I'm not sure what you're talking about PS3 servers, no such thing exists. PC, PS3, and soon PS4 players all share the same servers... and I've not personally had any latency issues specifically because of the PS3. Yes there is lag when loading or in FATES such as Odin or Behemoth, but no latency issues to speak of... get your facts straight please.
Yoshi-P said in a recent interview (I'm sure someone will beat me to the source because I have to go find it) that PS3 support is likely to be dropped, but will be supported for at LEAST the next year.
EDIT: OP already had it

What do you mean no latency issues? have you never ran titan ex before on ps3? Even in crystal tower if your a melee your character runs in place for a few seconds before attacking. Those are latency issues you can dodge landslides on your screen and still get hit by it, lol.
Just what I said... What latency issues? I easily clear Ex Primals, including Titan Ex, and a weekly basis between WHM,SMN, and WAR and I have no problems dodging landslides in the least bit, yeah CT is sometimes laggy, but not unplayable by any means. So again, what latency?
this thread is nothing but flame bait
I dont think so.
PS4 won't have a huge following till several more years.
It's been statistically proven over the years that the majority of consumers won't buy consoles more than $300. If 60% of the console population is still on PS3, there's no way Square would cut support. They'd be throwing away so much money.
So until PS4 has had several price drops and is around the $300 mark, there's pretty much no chance of it passing PS3's userbase.
Yeah sure those trials and raids are beatable, but the fact is its still there. The ps3 doesn't run smooth at all you have to turn off all other players animations to help reduce it and even that isn't that best. The best test i ever do is use my ring of thorns ale inside of mor dhona and sometimes it takes 5-8 seconds to show the animation.
Normally i would agree with you except for a couple of things, look at how much the ps4 has already sold in 5 months. It broke records for the amount of units it sold compared to other consoles. Another thing in the past consoles were coming out every 5 years, people with consoles were playing 360 and ps3 for 7 to 8 years so the jump to next gen was over due. And the majority of gamers on consoles want a ps4 over the other consoles so time will tell, but it wouldn't surprise me if we see a huge decline in ps3 owners within the next year.
And yet for all those numbers I still don't have a PS4. There is literally no game coming out that has my eye in regards to the PS4. Until there's some concrete info on games I do want, I'm not getting a PS4. I have better things to do with my money. And I'm sure I'm not alone in this regards. "But what about XIV?" I already play it on the PS3 and it's yet to make me feel like I wasted any money on the version (bought the PS3 CE). I barely notice any of the issues people say the console has, too.
I hate it when people make topics with titles that sound like they are declarative statements and only reveal themselves to be questions in the actual post, but it probably IS a good way to get people to click on your topic. I'm torn.
"Since patch 2.16, the number of players entering instances has increased, and as a result, the instance World servers have been subjected to heavy load, especially during peak hours, causing the servers which handle the instance areas to go down. The Primal data center Worlds in particular have been extremely congested, causing a high occurrence of crashes. As an additional note, as of the maintenance which occurred from Mar. 2, 2014 11:00 p.m. to Mar. 3, 2014 2:00 a.m. (PST), we attempted server setting changes to try to address the issue, but unfortunately the problem continues to persist."
Here's your "no evidence"
LMAO! this isn't a PS3 specific problem... someone needs to read the entire thread before looking like a fool. The conversation you brought into question was whether or not the PS3 as a system had any latency issues. What you just brought up is the problems they've been having with the instance servers... again 2 completely different problems, and the PS3 problem doesn't even exist. /shrug
I'd say check the number of people who have a relic, but that may prove too hard for you to corelate it to lag (cuz yeah everyone know people unable to beat titan are just plain noob who can't do shit, and lag doesn't exist).
This is not a PS3 problem though, on this I agree, but the PS3 limitations add some more lags if your connection isn't flawless. PS4 seems to neglate or at least minimize this effect afaik
