Level both tank classes?

Hi.
I got my warrior to 50 recently and i've got it geared up with darklight and relic +1.
I've seen people say paladins are easier/better for certain things and as main tanks, and easier to get the accuracy cap on with the relic weapons.
Is there any point in leveling a paladin too or would it be stretching my tokens too thin trying to gear up 2 classes?
Safe enough to stick with warrior?
Finding it hard to figure out how to get it accuracy capped since CT gear seems to really lack it for some strange reason.

I have a pld, and I can say from leveling a mar up to 30 so far, I find it to be better, I'm leveling both but only so I have the ability to use either, if your competent in 1 though I wouldn't say it's needed

Well darklight is usable by either class, but it's going to take you a while to finish gearing your Warrior with mythology. So you wouldn't want to spread that around. If you had a lot of coil gear or were full i90 on your War, then I'd say it might be worth it to go ahead and level both just to be flexible. But you don't.

You also have to think about the cross class abilities for PLD. It's not just a matter of leveling PLD to 50 and being done. To be effective as an endgame tank with PLD you would also want to level Conj all the way to 34 for Stoneskin.
To be honest, the tanks are both in a pretty good place right now. There are VERY few encounters where one tank is noticably better than the other. So in my opinion, you're talking about a LOT lot of extra leveling/gearing for a very tiny increase in effectiveness as a tank.

If I were you, I'd just go ahead and concentrate on your Warrior for now.
Accuracy simply isn't a problem for any content before the Binding Coil.
You only need something like 380 accuracy to cap for literally everything else in the game.
You can solve most of your accuracy issues for Coil by getting the Dual Haken from the extreme primals (which you will want to do before Coil anyway).
Now that Dual Haken is in the game, I don't think accuracy is much of an issue for War anymore.

Of course if you actually like playing Pld more than War, then by all means level it up.
But if you're enjoying your War, I just don't see that being worth the time/effort right now.
Better to finish gearing your WAR and get into some endgame content and then spend the time to make your character more flexible going forward.

Yes level both. Focus your warrior I guess. But I can not tell you how nice it is to have both fulled leveled. Fully cross classed and equally geared.

I'm glad I leveled both (though I really disliked it) just to have more flexibility in groups. Both are very well balanced in respect to one another, I personally have a little more fun on Warrior. You should be fine on tokens, just pick which one you want to gear as main. Both can use Darklight, CT, and Allagan gear, so it's really just the myth purchases that will warrant consideration (they do share myth accessories, as well).

Accuracy isn't much of a problem at all really, it's just that you have to use DL accessories until you can replace with Allagan. With Dual Haken, though, you can equip pretty much whatever you want.

But here's the problem I see with that:
If he chooses War as his main and starts to get several i90 pieces for it while being stuck with i70/80 on PLD, is there really any circumstance in which PLD would be "better" while having weaker gear?

In my opinion, having both classes really doesn't add any flexibility unless they're similarly geared.
And if he's in full Darklight and not running Coil, it's going to be a LONG while until he could have both classes in i90.
By that time we might be talking about an expansion and new tank jobs.
So I think in his circumstance it would be better to just concentrate on gearing his WAR.

OF COURSE:
If he's got a ton of free time after capping myth... then there's really no reason NOT to go ahead and level PLD.
In which case I agree with you guys that it would be a good idea.

You need to get your GLA, minimum to level 22 to get provoke, you wont get far in endgame without it.

Now I recommend leveling both, I did and I don't regret it. Some fights are better suited for PLDs, others for WARs, but both are good tanks. I just focused my first myth buys on the accessories (there were no X Primals at the time) and the belt, all of them are wearable by any tank. And the rest I started as full Darklight Tin Can xD.

By the time I had bought all accessories and belt I had the luck to have gotten Coils Body and Pant, both are wearable by both tanks. Also I bought the head piece for both PLD and WAR as this helmet drops from T5 and is a safe buy.

For feet I went for the PvP Warwolf Soleret of Fending, even if they are meant for PvP, its the only Feet ilvl 70 that can be used with Allagan Pants, and they are better in every aspect than Hoplite/Lords as they have more Vit/Def/M.Def.

So I managed to gear both my tanks pretty much at the same time and the only piece that was job dependant was the head piece. and the only level 70 pieces were feet and hands.

This gear setup will give you an average iLvl of 86, which is more than enough for all content, even T5 if your not main tanking.

Finally Last week I got lucky and both Allagan Feet and Hands droped on me, so I got both my tanks at 90 in a single shot!.

Final Note, get Dual Haken for your War if you want to do coils with it, is more difficult to hit accuracy cap with WAR, and the Dual Haken fix all those problems.

Level both, its worth it. :)

Gives you some extra flavor, if nothing else.

Considering I beat T4 as MT PLD which is a little less geared than my War.. I don't think my War could take double dread lol

Besides, aren't they removing myth cap next patch? (rumor I think)

I'm pretty sure that's been confirmed.
However they're also adding better gear with a new tomestone type, so lifting the cap on Myth won't really change much unless the new gear works for both WAR/PLD.

Just level both if you love tanking but want some variety! That's what I did. :)

I lv both and lovin it so far. I do perfer PLD tho since I usually lead and organize coil and primal group. PLD give me more time to yell out at ppl and make sure they in the correct position ;P.
I change to WAR sometime when i want some change of pace ^^', both class are good choice.

Pld is for encounters for when you haven't mastered as much, and war for content you have master (generally speaking).

But you have to be very lucky to collect the whole alligan set from coil, so focusing on both is a non starter for most people due to myth caps.

Pld > war though in most encounters since you can do much more with a pld then you can with a war. and 2xPld is perfectly doable, where 2xWar is a lot harder to clear contents.

War is boss though when you know the content inside out.

Level both, gear both with Allagan/Myth. If you're remotely lucky, you'll have enough Myth leftover and Myth restrictions are going to be lifted in 2.2 anyway with Coil t1-5 unlocked on Duty Finder. I prefer to play Warrior as it's more fun to me but do play Paladin when I feel lazy.

In general, you want to gear out your main before you level an alt. However, with the myth caps, coil lockouts, and 1 CT gear per week... there's really nothing else to do once you have all those done. So you might as well level a pld on the side. I have both a pld (i90) and war (i89) and there are advantages to both depending on content. 2 things that Plds have over War though - Hallowed Ground and a silence. For Turn 2 in coil, it's nice to have another silence for interrupts. And Hallowed Ground >>>> Holmgang

Def lvl both. I play PLD for our static and WAR for most everything else. It's nice to spice it up.

Level GLD to 22 and never touch it again. Funny how people want a challenging game, but they make a bee line for the path of least resistance and call it "viable". This is the same group that probably threw RNG at an encounter before the range nerf in XI. WAR can tank just fine, but some fake tanks and whiny healers can't handle a MB to the face.

I've heard it describe something like this PLD has easy mode and WAR has fun mode but i kind of liked them both also haven't used the tanks in a while!

I've both tanks but never used in Duty Finder for dungeons so not sure how good of a tank i would be.

And I've read that you really need 2 PLDs for Ifrit HM one that is just on stun duty.

I levelled both so that I could be suited for any situation. I've mained Warrior since Beta and geared that out with Myth first, but as mentioned, Darklight can be worn by both, so my Paladin was quite a way's behind my Warrior for some time until I got lucky with a few Allagan drops for the left hand side. Once my Warrior had all the Myth Armour/Accessories I needed on it, I filled in the gaps on my Paladin (Coronet, Gloves) and eventually Zenith'd my Curtana and Holy Shield. I'm sitting with both at iLvl 88 now as I'm missing level 90 earrings.

It just gives you more utility for stuff, as PF Groups still won't take a Warrior to MT Garuda XM because of double WW's. I also do Coil Turns 2 and 5 as Paladin, for Spirits Within and Hallowed Ground respectively.

I have 50 war already, now leveling PLD. I like pld more, but one thing make me mad, why paladin's Stun ability have GCD and warrior's not ? It's almost impossible to interrupt anything.

Sounds like your server has serious hate with warrior MT. :/ Mine doesn't care since Warriors can handle double WW just fine.

Because Paladin's Shield Bash has no cooldown and higher potency. That's the difference. War's stun: lower potency, off GCD, has 20s CD. Pld's stun: higher potency, on GCD, can chain stun.

w/ PLD you can chain stun stuff for 10 sec. then DR kick in. making it off GCD is a bit OP

Level both, it will make you a better tank. Not to mention the luxury of having both, picking one for a fight because you have to OT/MT and know what abilities are more appropriate for the encounter.

You don't need to have both, but it sure is nice.

Think there's just a lot of bad Warriors out there who jumped on the bandwagon before 2.1 and levelled in FATEs, and then still don't know how to play their Job and use their cooldowns effectively.

i have both so i changed my war over to 30/30 str
can ot/dps with decent numbers as war or i can mt on pld

dungeons i prefer war, big things i prefer pld

false i solo tank as WAR to have that 5th dps slot
wars stun is off gcd and after inferno he is always plume > plume > eruption > plume
and this eruption is really the only one that matters entire fight
have enough threat to even dps nail under him when they pop

Also leveled both because I couldn't decide (lol) and I have to agree with many others
PLD is usually the safer bet and performs great on bosses like Titan. Also great if you have CNJ34 and MRD leveled.
WAR is generally more fun because you feel like you can dish out more damage and have more options. MNK42 and GLA34 makes it even more fun.

But their playing styles feel different. If you love being a tank, go both and switch whenever you feel like.

I don't know what Titan you are talking about that PLD has the edge on WAR. :/ Titan is so scripted it's hard to not have Inner Beast up for Mountain Buster (which is pretty much the only move that matters to tank).

Hollow ground, Tempered. Pld is superior to war in titan ex. That's a given. They can survive more stacks when need to, and even clear their stacks (if they have to) through some tricks. That's why a war hasn't been able to single tank titan ex.

Wars are nice on adds for quick aggro, but that's nothing a pld can't do either.

Ifrit ex, pld is also better. Hollow at just the right time can be the difference between win and wipe.

Garuda though War is better because you have IB up for every WW as long as you know when it comes, unlike a pld that will run out of CDs, if anyone is derping.

I don't think it is impossible. With high enough DPS, you wouldn't need to go past 6 stacks and I've survived 6 stacks before. As for Tempered Will, any tanks that have cleared would be able to dodge Landslide so really, PLD just have the convenience in their favor. I wouldn't be surprised if videos start showing up of single tank warrior. Ifrit EX, as long as everyone does what they're supposed to do, there is no need for Hallowed Ground.

I find Holgang to be more usefuly than hollow, since the CD is shorter. a good timing Holgang is as good as hollow. I also fine WAR to be easier to survive on iffit Xm then PLD, (not 100%, may be due to awsome healer LOL)

Just because you're missing a leg doesn't mean you can't walk, but sure as heck easier when you're not missing it, eh.

I don't want you to be getting hit for 6 stack

Just like I don't want to be in phase 3 of ifrit without a hollow ground at the right time. One holllow ground makes phase 3 madness not very bad. 99% of Ifrit wipes is because in phase 3 ifrit rng puts 5 stacks on one tank, while the other tank still has 3...that's a "crap" moment because the entire party is being spammed with nail explosions and your tank needs to be spammed to be kept alive.

One hollow ground = the MT reaching 4-5 on purpose, allowing the OT to drop his stacks completely. If you have 2 plds, it makes it a cake walk because you ensure phase 3 stacks drop completely even with the worse ifrit RNG.

PLD > War for those content.

hmm.. i nenver been in these situation where both tank has stack, and i tank iffit Xm more than i want too ><. as long as you do tank swapping correctly and at the right timing. (meaning when tank swap, both tank does not get hit by debuff at the same time. The fight is a lot more easier when both tank on voice comm and coordinate their swap. same goes to healer.

WAR has single tanked Titan EX.

PLD always has CDs up for Garuda's WWas well. Its a timed fight....unless you are popping them at random times you will always have atleast 2 CDs and more then likely 3-5.

I agree 100%.

Other people claim Paladins can "chain stun" but we can't do it while tanking. At end game, in order to use Shield Bash before the enemy cast time finishes, we have to be auto-attacking; we cant be using any other abilities. Period. The GCD is longer than the cast bars, so if you used any ability right before the enemy starts casting you will never get the stun off in time.

And there is no way to tank using auto-attack; it's impossible to maintain threat if you're not using Flash or Halone combo.

This is a general problem with the encounter design. Paladin's offensive skills need to be rethought to have their effects trigger instantly. In Coil I have to use Spirits Within BEFORE the orbs start casting the spell I want to interrupt, or I can never interrupt because although Spirits Within is off the GCD the silence doesnt proc until the end of the animation -- which is longer than the cast time the orbs need to use their shock. The only way to time it correctly is to cast the interrupt before the enemy even starts casting.

The way the interrupts work currently, this is not something the average player is going to be able to do. Especially if they happen to lag a little.

I have no problem stunning dreads while solo tanking twintania. By the time you need to interrupt something you should have enough of a hate lead to sit idle a few moments.

Also, this sounds mostly like a latency thing. I agree spirits is too slow but not as slow as you describe.


Level and gear both. Actually, level and gear all classes. The game is much better, and you are much better at it, with that much flexibility.

I'm i90 both tanks and sch as well as i80+ all other classes.

No you don't. I silence all High Voltage while tanking just fine without using it before the casting. You might want to check your Internet. And surely as the previous poster shows, you can chain stun while tanking because you should have an enormous lead in enmity thanks to the boost to tanking stances in 2.1. Sometimes on PLD, I just keep casting Stoneskin on myself or on WAR, I just keep alternating SE and SP instead of BB when I know I won't lose hate.

Sadly, fights in this game are so scripted you can easily time boss rotations to within a gcd. Once you know this, you can be ready to stun and still keep on tanking.

And at least you are finally admitting RoH combo is better enmity generation than RoH spamming. Baby step improvements.
