Blitzball - How to Implement in ARR

Disclaimer: I am aware this isn't 'truly' Blitzball... but I think the name should stick for nostalgia's sake (or as an homage).


The Idea:

Utilize the current Potency System in semi-realtime.

The server will calculate directional “Force” applied to the ball every 0.3 seconds.

Once calculated, the ball will move X yalms, factoring in all Force applications.

E.g. the ball is hit right for 100 Potency, but left for 200... the ball will move left X yalms (X yalm/10 potency).

DoTs cause the ball to roll over time, pushing it 1/3rd of the total potency application every 0.1 seconds (you can apply spin on the ball in this way!).

HP is replaced with Stamina, which reduces with movement...

Stamina regenerates quickly if holding still, & even more rapidly upon being “exhausted”.

Exhaustion occurs when your Stamina reaches 0, you're forced to walk until your Stamina fully returns.

Stamina also affects movement speed: 0 25%, 1-24 50%, 25-49 75%, 50-74 100%, & 75-100 125%.

You're able to CC enemy players as usual... Push & Pull Mechanics work on the ball the same too.

Combat works the same too in the sense that 'damaging' an enemy player reaches your Stamina as it would HP, and heals will recover Stamina the same too.

MP & TP must still be managed, Defensive Bonuses reduce the rate of Stamina loss (as they would HP loss), Morale could reduce the rate of Stamina loss from only enemy players (not innate stamina loss), & Vitality could increase the Stamina cap (fractionally).

Just as there is PvP Gear, you could have special Uniforms of different tiers.

Just as there are PvP-specific Actions, you could have Blitz-specific Actions.

Things would likely need to be specially balanced for Blitzball... just as with PvP (for instance, I could see BRD's being out of control here).

What do you all think? Any suggestions?

You could even do things like have an Anti-Bullying Rule...

If you're beating up on enemy players too much, your Stamina will be instantly drained.

Perhaps indicate with a "Red Flag" Debuff, after 5 you're 'sitting out'.

Or actual PvP combat could be scrapped altogether, spare crowd-control effects.

I can imagine something like volloy ball/tennis will be easier to implement than blitzball. You can freely move around and have sof, mid and heavy thrust. All will comsume tp. Something similar to what you can do via handheld.

I like blitzball.

Card game or blitzball, what do I want more? :) Im serious if they put more fun things to do like gold saucer, blitzball, card games…something entertaining; I probably will be like that wow guy on south park. Hopefully whatever they end up doing turns out good and isn't something that makes me cringe like pvp.

SE, i don't think most of us need anything ridiculously original either. You can use pretty much the same concepts from the old FFs and I would be ecstatic.

I'd rather have SE co-works with Konami and let us play football (the real one, not handegg) in ARR.

Seems like a good idea. I like the FF8 card game for some reason. Would be neat for a card game. Have safe and take away matches. If you lose, the player gets to choose a card out of your deck and you have to spend so many seals or gil to buy packs. Or do certain instances or something. Would be pretty cool idea.^^

As you have 1 second latency on everyone else movement.... won't happen most likely. Or way too hard to play to be interesting

The server can be set to compensate. Just how you're able to hit opponents in PvP just fine.

dunno if it's due to 2.16 and various emergency maintenances, but even though I can predict and move in time for pre heart plumes (by moving before the cast bar appears. somehow I'm still just in time out and safe), I always die at 1st plumes post heart. no matter how much I can predict them, my game freezes and game over. Haven't tried PvP to judge the other part though

Good thing is: a static tangible object that gives you a set amount of time with which to strike it (perhaps the timing can be moved to 0.5) will be much easier to adjust-for-latency... or interact with in lieu of.

Just realized this 'ball play' mechanic has already been implemented into the game!

As for having it a part of FFXIV:ARR, it's probably going to be too much work for the developers and wouldn't fit lore wise anyway.

and to participate the players need to fight their way through the CT each time back after they left the stadium area.

It wouldn't have to be underwater.

There's nothing then that would forsake lore in having a ball-sport in the world of Eorzea.

I mean, they have freaking Bluetooth for goodness sakes lol, if they wanted to breathe underwater & play ball I bet they could do that too.
