What is Duty Roulette actually doing?

I don't know if it has always been this way, but I only became cognizant of it after the last slew of updates.

It seems that duty roulette does not draw from the same list of potential queues as one would get by choosing a specific dungeon or dungeons. Observed 3 cases, for all of which "Join Party in Progress" and all languages were selected:

1: A FC-mate needed a replacement tank in Toto-rak at final boss. I queue'd low roulette and was only getting fresh-starting runs of... some dungeon. I queue'd for Toto-rak specifically and was able to join the 2/3 in-progress.

2: I queue for Low roulette, only get fresh runs. I queue for Sastasha, Tam-tara, Copperbell, Halatali, and Toto-rak and get a 0/4 Sastasha instantly.

3: I queue for Main roulette, only get fresh runs. I queue for CM+Prae specifically and get in progress options for both.

I know people who picked Roulette can be mingled with people who specifically picked the dungeon, so I'm curious if this was just a recent implementation, if it has always been this way, and why.

My understanding of the roulette was to get at least one player, most likely a first timer, who chose the dungeon up to three (or seven) other party members. But I don't think roulettes abide by any other checkboxes (e.g. join in progress checkbox).

I have been rouletted into an in-progress Praetorium before, so it is possible to join in on an in-progress duty.


But it was awhile ago before I finished all Darklight gear, so I don't know if that has been changed.

I got in progress via roulette all the time before 2.16. Very rare since then.

Apparently according to my alt - people join duty roulette but d/c if it's a low level dungeon. I knew it was on purpose as they kept coming back to peek in and check if they were kicked yet. lol

Eventually one settled and said fuk you guys and left pt with 30 min cooldown. lol

Duty Roulette fills up parties mainly based on queue... And probably other factors.
By using DR you tell the servers that you're free for first party in the queue that have a need for you. If that's sastasha, or even another totorak that started queuing before your friends needed a replacement tank, you're not going to be matched to your friends.
By selecting specific instance, the server will match you for that instance...

One would think an instance in progress has more "need" for a replacement than one that has not yet started. *shrug*

Yes usually if you check the in progress box it will check for in progress duties first. How did you know your roulette was fresh? Last I checked you don't get the in progress indicator when you roulette, just the same generic roulette banner and in you go and you won't show up on your friends' party list until you actually hit Commence and enter.

In progress roulettes have the 0/3, 2/3, 3/4, 0/1 whatever status numbers just as anything else does when you get in progress checked. Has always been the case. Still is. Just roulette isn't giving the in progress instances currently ongoing.

Hmm I suppose DR just has priorities reversed and it will queue you with the guy who's been in line for 30 mins instead of the in progress that's At the first boss and 10 mins deep into the dungeon.

I always thought it was set up to help new players queue dungeons when most higher level players don't want to run them. I did not realize they were queueing this way. I have had a blast re-running all these with the Roulette so I do love the idea overall.

I thought it was to get experienced players to queue to help out new players. Especially healers and tanks.

No love for the low-levels? Shucks, if I could queue for Roulette and get Sastasha, Copperbell, Tam-Tara, Toto-Rak and Halatali all the time - especially Sastasha and Copperbell - to help out first-timers, I'd start queueing again. Easy runs for brownie points? No problemo!

Ok, let me frame a concise question since discussion is (for some reason) veering into "intent of the duty roulette":

Has anyone had an in-progress roulette since 2.16?

I've gotten 5 today - 5 Duty Roulette In-process Pharos today hence my other dungeon post.

Ok since it's related, I have DR a few times and 0/1. I joined then no one in the instance. The zone has not been even touched. Is my side not loading right or people trolling ques?

Had a tank in a run this happened to today. Three of us are there, dungeon starts, i look around for tank. Not there. He says "where are you guys?" About a minute later he pops in. He said it wasn't slow loading, because he was in a dungeon alone, moving around, and so were the other three of us. I've never had this happen before.

Though i have read of it being able to place you into in progress when everyone else has left, but thought that they fixed that.

They did, what happens is the group loses someone, so the "leader" just automatically hits the button to find replacements. But then they all leave anyways, and someone accepted that queue before they all left. Happens far more often on Primals. People just don't think when they hit yes.

the progress marks (0/3,1/3 etc)its been disable now to prevent the witdraw from players, this was mentioned on the patch notes i belive

That was specifically for CT (in patch 2.15), and just makes what used to be X/4 now 0/1 regardless of the progress. There is no indication of what you're describing anywhere in the 2.16 patch notes, unless you want to point it out: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodest...91ba3f787720f1
