Sneak & Invis spells/items - Bring them back and give us a reason to use them, please

In FFXI, I really enjoyed having to sneak/invis past some extremely dangerous monsters, either to get to a camp or for a quest. this is something that is missing from FFXIV and I would like to see return.

The tension that set in as you watched your 'sneak' begin to fade while you were running past the undead was exciting. Making the choice between fighting a mob or trying to slip past it during timed missions added another element of teamwork/communication.

Also, being able to use sneak/invis made 'true-sight' mobs feel all the more dangerous and interesting. Currently, it feels like all mobs in FFXIV agro to sound or simply radius. This takes all the fun out of waiting for a mob to turn it's back to you so that you can slip by undetected. knowing the difference between which mobs agroed to sound, sight, true-sight, or not at all made you a better player and gave you something to learn about the game.

Sneak/invis items (Food too) were also great for crafters since they couldn't be resold after use, like gear.

I don't want FFXIV to be a clone of FFXI, but I do feel that there are many good systems from the older mmo that are worth keeping and improving upon.

Does anyone else miss sneak/invis?

As annoying as sneak/invis'ing around with an alliance could be, I could not agree more with this. The thrill of it all was something I loved about 11. Like running ZM4 and being the only one with an unlit lantern, and having to run back and forth by yourself to light them all.

Yeah I miss S/I but please PLEASE make them lastr as long as the items did... the s/i spells were so god damn random in terms of duration.

I agree and support sneak and invisible (both spells and items) 100%. It will add to the exploration of this huge world. I also agree to make them last longer, and less random.

I remember being that one mage in the party that would have to cast the spells on everyone. Not only was it a pain to do it on all members, but if sneak ran out, you'd have to cast sneak again and invisible. By the time I would recast invisible on myself, someone else's spell would wear off and the cycle continued. It's funny though that I would look back on it with fondness.

They should probably improve it from the FF11 model by making the status more easily available to other classes besides mages. Have some class abilities grant it, as well as have alchemists or culinarians synth food that grants it as well.

yes to sneak and invis. Seriously running through mobs to avoid aggro, or killing every mob on the way to the one mob you want? This is less strategy than XI.

FF11 (an a lot of other games) have many good concepts that would work well in FF14.

+1 like for this thread, I think it should get all the attention it deserves because I also think this concept was really awsome and created a lot of excitement either during missions or exploration. GEtting to know which mobs aggroed to sight,sound,casting,blood,true sight was all part of the exploring fun of the game and contributed a lot to the "fun" factor of the game.

So I really hope they put in something like this, currently all the mobs feel bland and it just feels like the game was just the more rushed when you look at how the mobs behave, they aggro all the same way.

That nice for them, but I think it should be added to some battle classes as well. I would prefer some of them like in FFXI to provide crafters the possibility to make items that provides the sneak/invi effect BUT I would even compromise if they decided to give every class an ability to do so, would create less of a hassle compared to 2-3 person having to sneak/invi the whole alliance.

In regards to a sneak/invisible (item/ability/spell, etc.) that can be used by all classes, the dev. team is not planning on going in a direction where sneak/invisible are required, or if you don’t have sneak/invisible you can't proceed, so there are no plans for them currently.

Didn't Yoshida say in a producer letter that they were thinking of giving gathering classes stealth skills to avoid aggro?

A bit sad about this actually, where is my dislike button! :P

I think sneak/invi add depth to the exploration side of the game and could make for very thrilling situation if I base my experience in FFXI several years ago. Mobs are so boring as it is now, they pretty much all react the same way and there is no fun/strategy in that department... it's just stay as far from the mob as you can and keep running...

Yeah they wanted to make sure not to "copy" fun and good elements from FFXI, instead they went straight to the easy/boring/unthrilling/unfinished-feel elements, even thought it is nothing new or creative, just lazy design.

I do have wonderful nostalgia for Sneak & Invisible from FFXI, but I can understand the Development Team's decision. A Sneak and/or Invisible ability would be ubiquitous in an Armory System that allows players to equip any ability and an environment that allows for passive MP regeneration.

Everyone would just level the appropriate mage class to get the ability, like most every player did with Cure and/or Second Wind.

That is true enough but they would still have to do it. They could either make them high level spells or job specific. Even then, if they were like level 25 CON (exemple) it's ok if everyone get the spells if they level up, after all there would be items to provide those effect so everyone is still able to get them.

The point thought is that it could make for more fun explorations and missions. Even if everyone is able to get the spell (they could make it available with guild marks only so it would be less common maybe) they still need to use it properly when it is needed.

Hope they change their mind in the future.. :/ I would like to see some 'field spell/abilities' like them one day (also float). Pity, for now.

sneak invis, ehhhhh dont think it was agood idea, way too much sneak and invising to get to the big bosses in ffxi.

They can still put these spells/abilities in. Just don't make them mandatory to gameplay.

I'd have to agree with Physic. I didn't like how most dungeon running in XI consisted of everyone casting sneak/invis and running to the boss.

I'm not going to lie: as a solo exploration mechanic I did have a lot of fun with it. I remember using Sneak and Invisible or Tonko to get around Ifrit's Cauldron while mining. That part was OK. But parties sneaking through dungeons without having to fight much was kind of anticlimactic.

In any event, the ability to outrun aggro in XIV reduces the need for sneak/invis somewhat even as a solo mechanic.

God no, Hell no. If I want that I'll play Metal Gear. Please don't make sneaking around and being invisible big things again. I want to FIGHT and KILL monsters, not waltz around them.

(Wonder if that it also the reason we dont have chocos and airships, Tanaka never wanted them in the game at all!)

How about making Dungeon mobs true sight so you just can't run to the final boss. Give them large agro range as well. Then that way it sneak/invisibility can't be used.

I would love invisibility and sneak to get the damn nodes and camps I haven't been able to reach, because someone thought it was a good Idea to put rank 80+ Ahriman in a small narrow paths.

wow what was wrong with sneak and invis?
i loved being able to sneak past mobs, running to the nearst corner to recast and continuing. it adds depth.
man i just dont get them some times.

But yeah, back to the topic at hand... I would still like to see an invisible/sneak ability for "at least" crafters and gatherers, since I generally like exploring with the Quick ability on my Miner.

It's just hard to fully explore the game's world until either level cap is raised, chocobos are added, or you have meat shield friend(s) with you to take the fall to get by high level enemies blocking off an area in to a REALLY cool, unique area in a zone. But like Dynamis said, it's not a game killer by any means...

I am really excited that there is no sneak/invis because that is one of things I hated about FFXI, especially if you were a class that have sneak/vis you had to buy unreliable items that cost a fortune most of the time and cost you inventory space. I wouldn't mind if they added them for DoL can be the only classes that could use it, but I really don't want to have to worry about getting agro from a mob in a new area especially if I don't know if it is sight or sound. Some people really liked that because it adds an unique element to gameplay and I understand that 100% but I just don't like it or agree with it. If it was to be implemented I would hope that it only be one or the other instead of both of them. I wouldn't mind there being an invisibility in the game but sneak is a no no.

Kinda disappointed myself... I always thought it added a great sense of adventure traveling to places you had no right being in, knowing at any moment if one single mob spotted or heard you, it was over.

Wouldnt it be more fun just to fight your way through an area rather than invis/sneak through every dungeon?

If there is no sneak or invisible we definitely need something to replace it. Something to make exploration exciting.

Whilst I really liked what FFXI did, I don't think S/I is an answer. I think it's poor design to have some low level quest on the other side of a bunch of really crazy tough monsters.

What I DO think the effect of it was that there was a sense of foreboding and mystery entering these areas with really challenging enemies. But I think that can still be done, and giving a reason to engage with these really difficult enemies or sneak around the ones that are too difficult can still be really fun without making yourself undetectable.

I hope places like beastmen strongholds provide this kind of sense of mystery and danger, but it would also be nice if, with the zone reforms,

So S/I will not be implemented, I feel this gives us other options.

The novelty we are looking for is different types of aggro. With multiple aggro types we see more flavor to mobs, giving us a sense of really having to know the game world a bit better. Everything aggroing to "sight" does get old and it is used by every mmo imaginable.

This is a fine opportunity for the community (and dev. team) to get creative. We want as Sephr said the "foreboding and mystery", so I think we could drum up some other forms of aggro.

passive/active mode
spell casting
running/walking
ability (speed surge, blood rite)
healing
- I'm sure we can come up with some very interesting ideas.

Could even take it a step farther and say if no other aggro will be implemented, then what other modifications to mob behavior would we like to see?

- Like instead of pathing or stationary mobs, they are interactive with the environment and their surroundings a bit.

who knows, just thought I'd throw out a few ideas.

sneak and invisible don't add depth to the game. They instead make it almost pointless to have monsters that aggro, and then when they really need something that aggros, they just make it so sneak and invis don't work anyway.

IMO S/I are not needed when monsters do not chase you indefinitely like in XI.

You mean hard mode. how does not having s/i make the game easier?

Once they introduce epic flying mounts we won't need sneak or invis... Can just fly over the monsters!

I remember no one being around to help me unlock Puppetmaster. I was a level 30-something my highest Job, so with Sneak and Invis I struggled through Caedarva mire and the level of tension at any moment anything could kill me was such a rush. I learned about chigoes, and imps the hard way, but I wouldn't give it up for anything. All thanks to Sneak & Invisble.

I think regardless if they bring in S/I or not. They need to put that sense of fear and danger into adventuring and exploring, that is what makes games great.
