PS VITA Remote Play: What do you think it will be like?

I was reading over the blog from the 12th and noticed it mentioned Yoshida was playing Titan HM on the ps vita. I wonder how that went?

How do you guys think the remote play will be and do you think we will get a chance to test it out in the ps4 beta coming up day one?

I'm under the impression it will use the ps4 and just be a video streamer with a controller function but the processing all is done ps4 side. Any ideas?

Looking forward to sitting at say Starbucks and waking up my ps4 remotely and play some ffxiv. Do you think that will work?

My guess is laggy and clunky in terms of navigating the UI. I can't imagine actually doing a primal, let alone titan HM. PSV remote play will be used for crafting and gathering.

People think lag is bad now? Try adding even more delay from the stream from your ps4 to wherever you are on your vita. Anything requiring dodging will be near impossible. I think there is a reason the ps4 trailer showed mining when showing off remote play. It'll be good for crafting and gathering.

I think they specified that it was for Overworld leveling involving Leves and other such things. No Primal fights, or any other serious end game content of the sort.

Maybe the extra delay is not so big if the Vita is only some meter away from the PS4. If it works like with PS3, it can use direct wireless connection to the PS4 within short distance without going through the internet. Internet access would be only needed if there is a long distance between Vita and PS4.

Titan X with even more latency and tiny screen? Sounds nice...

I highly doubt that the ps vita will cause additional internet lag. The video stream/connection will likely be over your router via wireless and most routers are capable of transfer rates way higher than typical internet connections. For example the average wireless router these days is capable of 300+ mbps transfer rates over wireless-n which is what ps4 and vita use as far as I know. The typical internet connection is about 5-100 mbps depending where you live and FFXIV uses much less bandwidth than 5mbps (I know because I don't lag on my 3mbps rural internet connection).

On another note, I think remote play will work just fine for more casual encounters and crafting/gathering. Due to the extremely small screen, certain parts of the UI will be hard to read and you will have a much smaller view of the battlefield which would make difficult encounters, such as titan ex, much harder than they need to be.

No, transfer rates doesn't really effect latency(lag in other words)... Wireless connection by itself adds a bit of latency and "edit:" data first needs to be processed/rendered/prepared/streamed back to Vita by PS4. At worst case scenario you can get +100ms extra latency and that's quite a bit.

Yeah that's pretty much what I mean, I would be surprised if it even added 10ms extra latency to be honest. The wireless router I'm connected to right now has a <1ms response time. If you're getting much latency from this you probably have a bad router or wireless nic.

Everything needs to be processed, rendered, prepared and streamed back to Vita by PS4, this adds majority of extra latency. It is not just simple data transfer(clarified in my original post). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56jWj1Vwmu0

There is definitely lag between the systems. ACIV is playable, and I have never had any issues in story mode, but I can still tell there is a delay. I would never play online with the vita because of this. I anticipate gathering/crafting, and perhaps menial solo stuff will be the only real viable option. At least early on.

ive been using splashtop streamer to play this game from work over the internet. 30mbps up/down at work 10mpbs up/down at home and its almost 1-1 in terms of response/latency. so i dont think it would affect vita in anyway since its going to be on wifi.

There is a very small delay with remote play if you compare it with the TV side by side, but i doubt itll really make a big difference in overall lag. Ill try it but i doubt ill like it much. Playing on Vita is pretty uncomfortable, when youre trying to simulate the dualshock with it.

Did they ever confirm it CAN be done through the internet? When sony first announced it, they said on ps4 games it would be done locally through your router ONLY. Not sure if it has changed since then, because I have no interest in using my vita for anything they've shown off.

As far as Remote Play goes in general on the PS4 and Vita, I hear it's fairly solid, but the lag varies upon connection. However, I'm not so sure FFXIV:ARR will play too pleasantly on it. I like the idea and would like to try it someday because I think it could be cool and fun, but I honestly think controlling it might be a problem.

It depends on the players I guess. Since the vita is pretty much an all in one device. Touchscreen, dual analog sticks, full button controls. So controlling the game wouldn't be much different than playing with the normal ps3 controller. I guess with the touchpad you can aim your place-able aoe abilities too which is a plus. If anything, I bet the problem would lie with the small screen size of the vita. Might be a challenge to read anything in the game.

I am actually really excited for this. At the moment I use a streamer client called "everyair" to play on iPad but I would defintiely prefer playing on vita. I dont think I will be raiding on the Vita but I would enjoy just doing crafting or harvesting or questing and maybe just simple dungeoning on it. a little latency isnt a problem because all fights are scripted there is little suprise to come.

I think it'll act in much the same way as Virtual Console Remote Play does now. The graphics will be a lower quality, control input response times will increase significantly, and I doubt any form of chat could be read or responded to properly.

My full intent with the Remote Play feature is to level Gathering and Crafting skills on the go. I would be crazy to attempt to perform any kind of combat in Remote Play mode, unless I am proven completely wrong.

Remote play can be done flawlessly if the network hardware is decent. If you guys got in steam in-home streaming beta it's essentially the same concept.

I have steam installed on both my desktop and laptop. I use steam to launch FF14 on my desktop which does all the processing workload.

I can now stream the game from my desktop to my crappy laptop that would've never been able to run FF14 at max graphic. The fps is always stable and only stutter ever so slightly if your wifi experiences signal loss (which is why I recommended decent network hardware). The input from my laptop back to my pc is also smooth and is hardly a problem. I have yet to test with an actual game controller but I'm sure it'll still be good.

This is pretty much the equivalent of PS4 + Vita for PC and I'd definitely recommend this solution for any PC enthusiast interested in mobile gaming but doesn't want to bust out cash for a high end gaming laptop.

I've been testing this out after I opened the thread with Assassin's Creed IV and it has been working flawlessly. I can do either straight wifi to wifi between vita and ps4 or just use my router and do it like that. I have a netgear ac6300v2 router and my wifi at home is very stable. Too bad vita is only 2.4ghz instead of 5ghz but it works fine. No lag and no problems with graphics looking as good as my tv does. Smaller but still good just the same. I have tried it at starbucks and would you believe it, it works there too. Not as perfect as it did in my own network but I can keep up with it just fine. I would recommend this solution to anyone that has a very good wifi at home. Do not recommend if you have cheap network gear installed or lots of 2.4ghz interference.

Well there's only two shoulder buttons as oppose to 4 and using the touch panel hasn't proven to be a good alternative from my own and others' experiences (as far as other remote play games go), so I still think there might be some problems with controls though I'm sure one could eventually get used to it. And yeah, the screen size was another thing I forgot about that can make it a little challenging. Overall, though, I hope that it can work well enough to be bearable and fun because, like I said, I would really like to give it a shot.

The delay from PS4 to Vita is microseconds shouldn't be an issue if you are already use to playing with a controller. Only troublesome thing is having to use the touch pad for 2 buttons.

I would buy the Vita just to level my Gatherer and Crafters. I wonder if it would work for doing like hunting log and stuff that would be cool. If it ran good enough I could level characters anywhere...nice!!!!!!!!!!

I'm definitely looking forward to playing FFXIV on my Vita.. It's the biggest selling point of the PS4 at the moment.

I thought Vita Remote play is only meant for crafting jobs and gathering jobs, since you wouldn't use it to talk to ur FC text to small on the screen.

I despite the fact that I'll get a vita for remote play I hope they'll make it so that you can't do certain dungeons or all of them while on vita.i certainly don't wanna be stuck with bad players that can barely see what's going on.

Okay, if you want to know what it's going to be like to use the vita on remote play, while playing FFXIV, then you should look up how the Vita functions while under remote play of other games.

How does remote play work? It's advised to have the ps4 hardwired. It is also advised to have the ps4 and the vita on the same local network, if they are on different networks you will of course have some lag (IE attempting to play FFXIV at Starbucks, while your PS4 is 15 miles away). This may be possible in the future with better internet efficiency, but this is not a fault with the Vita > PS4 remote play function, rather your internet provider. For this reason, some people may experience no problems with remote play, while others can barely get it work. It is also important to note that the Vita does not do he heavy lifting, that is the PS4's job. Imagine remote play in a sense like Netflix. The servers do the work, while the picture is sent to your screen. Some Vitas have an OLED screen, while newer ones have an LED, thus the picture quality on some Vitas will be better or worse than others. I suggest buying an OLED screened Vita soon, as they are being discontinued.


With all of this in-mind, it's important to understand that Remote Play is a good idea if say, your family wishes to watch a movie or television on the tv of which your PS4 is hooked up. Remote play allows you to still play FFXIV, while sitting on the couch with your family as they watch Moulin Rouge, or something. Basically, it functions in the same way that the Wii U does with it's tablet-like controller.

First, it's important to have realistic expectations. Clearly remote play is not meant for those hardcore moments of raiding. It is however good for things such as leveling an alt job, crafting or gathering. Will it be possible to go into dungeons (etc...) while on remote play? Yes, with the nature of how remote play functions, in theory, everything that you can do on the PS4, you can do on your Vita. Is it advised to do so? No. Will you be happy with the outcomes? Probably not. Also, don't forget that a Vita is MUCH more than a Remote Play machine. If you buy it only for Remote Play, you are doing yourself and your Vita a grave injustice. Overtime, Remote Play will become better, just like any other function, but it is not the only thing that it is good for.

The Vita is a FANTASTIC piece of hardware, and at it's price-point, it is well worth it. Keep realistic expectations, and you'll be extremely happy with your little gaming handheld.

It only show you what the PS4 show you (on a smaller screen). It don't think.

Personally, I can't wait to try out remote play. I don't think I'll use it for anything other than casual play, but honestly...at least 95% of my playtime is doing casual stuff. The biggest disadvantage of remote play for me won't be the tiny UI—it'll be the difficulty of chat. I spend a lot more time talking than I do running difficult content.

Still, you can't have everything. The content needs to fit the system, and it seems to me like remote play really takes advantage of what the Vita offers: the ability to make higher-end gaming experiences portable.

If I can play FFXIV at work on my lunch breaks...
Who cares about chatting and primals?!
I can make food and potions and train Harold the Chocobo! Also dailies. Saves time for 'proper' content ;)

I agree, this is nice for Crafting/Gathering or being social, but i would not do something delay-sensitive...

On the same network, the delay for Vita remote play is negligible. I have used it quite often with my PS4 and I cannot tell that its not being run directly on the Vita. While not quite the same thing, I played DCUO through remote play and it played no differently than on the PS3/PS4. I do not think the added latency (if your current latency is good) will be enough to make any real difference.

The game doesn't use that much bandwidth to begin with, so streaming data to the Vita isn't going to increase game latency that much. Considering that the maximum packet size is 1500 bytes, the time to transmit one packet this size is still typically a fraction a second, and it's doubtful most packets will be anywhere near this size. Of course I may be wrong but people stream to broadcast services all the time.

The biggest problem with playing on the Vita will probably be communicating. Despite having a touch screen typing still is far from speedy. And it the on screen keyboard takes up most of the screen.

I've uploaded several videos to youtube of the PS3 version. Playing these back on the Vita using it's youtube app, the HUD is really small. It's worse when viewing the HUD of the PC version.

I think the remote play feature is a niche concept. People are probably not going to play from away from home do to the complexity of getting it to work. You will need to play over WiFi. And the game will still be running on the PS4. If there is one TV in a house with multiple people, and the TV is being used for another purpose that does not involve the PS4, perhaps people will use remote play to play the game. But it'll probably be easier to use the Vita to play a native Vita/PSP game rather than use remote play and wait for the TV to become free.

Remote Play is not a new idea. It was possible to use remote play on the PS3 thru out it's entire lifetime. Despite this few games supported it. When people wanted to play their PS3, they used the PS3. Not remotely play it on their PSP's.
